I just watched this while playtesting a design that uses multifunction cards! Thank you!

Absolutely love these videos. Can't wait to see how this is implemented in the final UnderQuest rules!

Glad you enjoyed it! UnderQuest has been a challenge thus far, as I am trying to put everything I have into this one. It all starts with a solid core combat system, and I keep going back and forth on that... lol

Thanks for sharing the ideas on multifunction cards! I just might use an idea like that for a deck-building game I'm currently cooking up.
One of my favorite multifunction card was the character cards on a game you designed, Tin Helm, where you pick a race and a class but that race could never be the class on its back. Really clever design, elegant but also cost efficient. And i can't wait to receive my copy of Gates where i think there's a few additional cards for Tin Helm as well.
I love watching your videos on this. It's a really big help for amateur designers like myself. Very enlightening and encouraging as well. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the kind words! That means a lot to me. I am glad you like that mechanism for the race/class in Tin Helm. I had folks telling me that I should put the races on front and back of two cards and the classes on the front and back of the other two cards, so that players could play as any race and class combo. I think they missed the point. I like that some races just cannot be certain classes. It brings me back to being a kid in the 80s playing old CRPGs where you simply couldn't be a dwarf wizard. I will likely use this same form in the upcoming UnderQuest. Thanks again!

@@jasonglover6615 I understand why you put certain classes on the backs of particular races. Exactly! You just can't be a Dwarf Wizard or an Elf Barbarian. There are just some classes that certain races are better at.
I've ordered Gate and Tin Helm during the crowd sale and i can't wait to get my copy. I'm looking forward for Underquest, too, spcifically on how you're going to tackle the combat system. Best of luck on the design, Jason! I hope it turns out as great as your previous works, if not greater. 😁

I had never seen "Oh My Goods" before, but I think I need to pick it up now. The creativity and ingenuity the designer used is inspiring.

It truly is amazing! It is funny because it is not super easy to learn. You would think any game that is just a deck of cards would be easy to learn or teach, but that is not the case. Do not get me wrong, it is not like learning a huge Euro game, but for the size of the package, it is shocking... lol... I think every gamer should own a copy, especially because it costs like $15.

Love this. My first game is nearly done and it’s a one deck game and each card has 3 functions. The one you use depends on when it’s played. Going to make it in a tin too so it’s small footprint and only takes about 5 min for a full game. The deck also acts as a timer if you dont win before you run out if cards in the draw pile it’s game over

Nothing gives me a thrill more than coming up with a system that cuts down on waste and is clever. Best of luck to you!

My favourite multifunction cards is SpaceShipped (3 uses: planets [which itsellf has 3 different uses], resources, enhancements/crew members/new ships). Really, a lot of the ButtonShy games implement multifunction, since the size restriction is 18 cards.
Another point not mentioned here: maybe the name is Multiresource cards? Like Gate cards. Also great to offer the player potions: one card can be used for various purposes, depending on the resource you use. And some special cards have multiple uses (in Gate/Gates that'd be cards with an extra action in the bottom) - other game that uses it is The Siege of Runedar (worth a check).
Another 'meta' multi-usage of cards are those games where you need to use cards in your hand to pay for new cards: so the main money resource are the cards itself (adding 1 more function).

Thanks for the comment. I find any use of a card that expands outside of a single function to be quite interesting. Sometimes the number of cards left in a player's hand equates to victory points, or like you mentioned they can act simply as currency.

If I did, I wouldn't make it exactly the same. I would try to create a new experience, and hopefully an even better one. Not a shabby idea though...

In regard to a secondary topic you covered, I really like your outlook of making the player feel lts their own fault if they lose rather than luck or mechanics. This reminds me of Final Girl and why it did not work for me, even though I was excited to play it. I played 3 games I believe, never caused a single wound to the monster in any of them, got my face impossibly stomped to such a degree that I just had no idea of how to proceed. In other words, I felt powerless instead of empowered or inspired. The Final Girl in those movies has just survived impossible odds and always has a fighting chance, I mean, she's going up against a supernatural being. Anyway, I hated it. It should have been called 'random pedestrian vs God Monster' lol.
