Nick is 100% accurate on his evaluation of dentistry. It is an odd industry (my dad and grandfather are both dentists and I have worked in business of dentistry for 6 years).
    A. You can live without your teeth. It’s not a great life but it’s possible. Dental care is 100% elective vs taking care of weight or liver or lungs
    B. Dentistry is 4-6 years of medical school after 4 years of science undergrad. As soon as you enter the workplace you’re a manager and a business owner with 0% experience in this area.
On top of that, dentistry is 100% elective making you a medical salesperson. Except you have no sales training.
You’re a tactical and technical doctor by trade but you’re supposed to have exceptional management and people AND selling skills to have a successful practice (most of which don’t).
Your employees are typically some or none college educated. Hygiene school typically starts straight out of high school. Hygiene is also elective and arguably even more sales driven (heads up, you don’t need that fluoride for $60, just buy Act fluoride at Walmart and you’re fine).
It’s a hilarious recipe for disaster that hasn’t updated its model in the modern era an inch. Some figure it out but most don’t.
Additionally, almost all dental insurance is more of a coupon than insurance. It’s less about coverage and more about 10% off on your first two visits. Most likely, you will save money paying out of pocket than paying for dental insurance.
For context my wife worked in dental insurance for 2-years. It’s not a scam but it is misrepresent as to how helpful it is. So maybe it is a scam.
There are good dentists out there but they are far and few in between. Do your research.
Generally if you see a large count of Google reviews, it means the dentist has intentionally sought those reviews because they’re working on a good business.
If you see a long standing dental office with

After reading the `Never enough`, I have a new hero and it's Andrew :) One day I will experience the same feeling as Andrew did when he met Charlie Munger.
