- I set out to build a beautiful bench, being inspired by so many other great woodworkers. It took me a while to decide on a design and features, but I am happy with how it is turning out and am getting close to the finish line. Taking longer than I thought it would, but having a good time while doing it. Hope you enjoy the video and happy woodworking!

I was definitely impressed with youe OSHA approved work boots.
Just about to start one of these myself. Glad I have you trial running it for me!
Matt Estlea - Furniture Haha, hopefully you will make quicker work of it than me.
I hope I do as well with the bench I'm building. good on you!
Man, I've been in such a rut with my Roubo build. I've got people in both ears telling me "do this" "do that" and I found this video where you actually show a lot of the stuff that people leave out. I especially liked that you talked about the homemade wagon vise. A lot of people skim over that. Great build. Thank you! Maybe I'll give you a shout out in the bench build video!
Wm. Walker Co. thanks. Shout outs are always welcome!
The aesthetic of your shots is super nice. Subscribed.
Looks great love the dovetails
This guy is alright! What are those cylinder heads sitting there? A gearhead and a woodworker! You know he's alright!
One thing to remember! If this bench is not too beautiful to use, then you are going to use it!!! Hammers will pound upon it, leaving gouges, chips, marks warts. I have a very well made hardwood traditional bench that now has all the marks gouges and chips after many years of usage. It definitely has it's place front and center of my shop. I love that bench.
should have watched the video to the end. The glue up is vital as far as expansion and contraction. So as I just did, as woodworkers, we tend to get a bit ahead of ourselves. TAKE YOUR TIME! The end product will reflect your preparation. With all i have seen on RUclips, I stand by my first blog about Jody. Stay safe, and ALWAYS REACH 2" ABOVE YOUR GOAL.
Definitely worth a subscribe. Please know how fortunate you are. Your build is beautiful, brought a tear. Nothing is better, then seeing integrity in a person, and build. Thank you! You Tubers, watch and listen to the best, set your line there, so you have something to attain or aspire to. DON'T EVER SETTLE FOR, "BUT THAT'S OKAY"
Actually, I was thinking about the wagon vise, the narrow one? It would be hidden to put in a plate from underneath that was screwed in. Then it would be an option to take it out/apart to repair it!
Nice work Jody!!
phenomenal quality, I think your channel will flourish man. You earned my sub.
Nice work. Future ref a spline for end caps works well.
im subscriber number 155.... thanks man for doing this
he only has 154 subs as of this writing. what is going on with you?
I see great potential here, your work is great and it deserves a subscribe :)
Agreed... I subbed too.
Do you like the jointer/planer combo or wish you had one of each?
Ryan Reeves for me it works great. I don't use it everyday either. You do have to lower the height of the feed table most of the way down to go from planing to joining which takes 20 seconds or so. I have yet to have the thought of needing separate machines. I love the 12 inch capacity of the jointer and if I got another machine it might be either a smaller bench top jointer or a larger planer.
Hi nice idea and video, just wanna know what drill bit you used for dog holes on wagon vise side? Thanks
Jody, this bench is absolutely one of the badest I‘ve seen so far. The attention to detail is enviable, the finish so far absolutely brilliant. Looking forward to taking in part two. Only one comment you‘ve probably already heard. Please treat yourself (and us) to a decent mike. There were parts during which you were hard to hear. The music was louder than your voice. Otherwise 👍👍👍
good job jody!! im getting ready to build my benchcrafted split top roubo bench!! this gets me pumped up! got my hardware and ash lumber! its in the shop getting acclamated!! thanks for the inspiration !!
I like your work. Happy to subscribe!
Hi! I hope you can still read this, what size of forstner bit you used for your end cap tail vise? Please reply thank you so much
Nice build. I would be somewhat concerned about the cross grain situation you have at the wagon vise end. With gluing the end completely, over time this might cause a split to develop with changes in humidity.
it will. I would have cut a tongue and grooved dovetail all the way across and just slid the end piece in there. then I would attach a laser cannon to it so I could destroy anyone who suggested I should have done otherwise.
Yep. This will likely cause problems down the road. This is why lag bolts are used on the end in most bench builds like this one. But, still a very nice bench, and a talented woodworker!
William Boggess all these ppl that get all technical with cross grain and stuff like that have never built anything in there life, just let the guy do his thing and enjoy the clip
beautiful bench brother! nice work, can't wait to see the finished bench but probably not as much as you lol. been there
Awesome
I noticed the shaft of the vise extended when turned it out, that wouldn't have happened if you had put that threaded piece on the block and ran it through. next time!
I get what you are saying, but then you wouldn't be able to use the "open" section in front of the block for long boards, because you would always have the threaded rod in the way.
Turned out looking amazing. Unfortunately I think you are going to have big problems with the cross grain glue up there. Its not allowing fir wood movement and the glue wont hold it.
yeah... when I saw him gluing that up I was like nooo!!!! dude what are you doing?? don't do that! As if he could hear me and I could saving him from a critical error. The good news is that end grain to face grain glue ups are not strong at all, so with any luck, the glue joint will fail before any of the wood splits... then he can just use lag bolts with enlarged holes.
How do you like your combo machine? I have been thinking about the 12 jet helical head
Oscar Loza overall its pretty nice. Plenty of power. Love having a 12 inch jointer that's for sure. The dust port is not the greatest in planing mode because it has to draw it up and out. I do not have dust collection set up, so that probably would help to draw the saw dust out. I just have the straight blade.
Great work, I like the detail and the joinery looks great, I going to use you wagon vice design for my bench. Subbed
What hardware did you use for your tail vise?
I believe it was a Jorgensen vise screw. It was tough finding a nice well built screw. I do in retrospect would have liked the benchcrafted tailvise but at the time wanted to save a little money. I use the tail vise more than the leg vise.
nice bench, but you'll have a serious problem with wood movement, I wish you put the glue on the dovetail only, not the entire cross grain. Putting many coats of finishing might help to reduce the movement.
Good build Jody. Get yourself a throat/neck microphone, sound is crap when you're speaking 🤘
I am not convinced that you assembled the wagon vise correctly. Or at least in the optimal fashion.
or maybe it's the wrong hardware.
but I don't like the handle moving away from the bench as the wagon moves toward the edge.
but for it to work the way I would like, the shaft would have to be longer (to go through the wagon block), and you would need unthreaded support areas where it passes through the end of the bench and on the far end.
then the wagon block would move "on" the screw, instead of being pushed/pulled by it and the handle remains stationary as it turns.
that quibble aside, I liked the bench & the video.
ekw555 I agree with you that it looks better having the block glide along the screw so the vise doesn’t travel in and out of the bench. I was looking to save some money and not buy the bench crafted wagon vise at the time. In retrospect I probably just should have bit the bullet. I also don’t use it too much so it isn’t sticking out too often. Thanks for the comment.
I was thinking, instead of biscuits, you could have made it pretty with some butterfly inserts.
Nice nob. All that work on the floor....you need a bench......oh wait.....
Lose the background noise while engaging in dialog.
very nice. get yourself a mic.
I absolutely hate trying to block out ill considered music to try to hear what is being said, especially when the sound quality of the speaker's mic is already poor. Thumbs down for that bonehead editing mistake.
This time I'll use woodprix instructions to make it by my hand :)
Sorry, I got about half way through and had to stop. Couldn't hear what you were saying because of the dreadful music at double the volume of your voice. Loving your woodwork though.
This woodworking book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) has a good deal of information about woodwork. The book also shows a couple of designs and explanations on the materials useful for various woodworking procedures and the guidelines on completing various procedures properly. Simply speaking, I`m satisfied utilizing this book, especially in the procedure of understading about wood working.
Still another music video, virtually no narrative. High speed filming. This is the trend. Tiring, boring.
I agree. It absolutely turns me off to some people to the point where I'm likely not going to watch any of their videos.
