Tommy and Dick Smothers had captured America's hearts with their musical comedy acts tackling topical issues with a satirical wit. However, as they began boldly critiquing the Vietnam War and Establishment through pointed sketches, it put them directly in the crosshairs of conservative censors. Battles escalated over what could and couldn't be said on the once-wholesome program. Through it all, the brothers refused to let politics muzzle their creative vision, fueling tensions with the nervous network.
When one particularly controversial episode was suddenly pulled and replaced right before airing, it lit the fuse on an already volatile relationship. Enraged over losing control, Tommy and Dick retaliated with even more daring material guaranteed to offend. But they had underestimated just how far CBS was willing to go in silencing dissenting voices. In an unprecedented move, the show was permanently canceled only weeks after getting renewed.
Discover how this shocking termination triggered intense debates around freedom of speech that echo to this day. Learn why the brothers' defiant stand came at great personal cost yet only amplified their legendary reputations as comedic crusaders. Most amazingly, see how Tommy and Dick persevered with their career afterward in the face of blacklisting, keeping their rebellious routine alive for over half a century more.
Join us now as we separate fact from fiction around one of broadcasting's most infamous acts of censorship. It's a timely look at an important free speech controversy that's still relevant in today's polarized media landscape.

The Smothers Brothers Show was one of my favorite shows in the 60s along with the Carol Burnett Show. The Brothers would start the show with some music and comical arguments over anything that ended up with Tommy yelling at Dick "Mom always liked you best" when he was losing the argument. I never could understand why they canceled the show when it was a ratings winner and getting lots of viewers. Today the networks would love to have such rating numbers.

The Smothers Brothers comedy hour was one of my most favorite TV shows.
I also loved PBS' Masterpiece Theatre & mysteries.

I was so young when bros were on tv. Most of their humor went over my head. But I knew from the start. These bros were constantly questioning authority. And proved their authenticity by challenging authority. Well ahead of their time. Opened the floodgates for everyone afterwards

I watched reruns of the show. I loved it. They had the Beatles on their show. Each one . Ringo sang his No No No song on the show. 😊

Where are the clips? This is just an essay with pictures. We don’t want to hear you speak…we want to hear what the Smothers said. What a waste of time this was.

My favorite character was Pat Paulson, his deadpan satire was always the shows highlight. But I'm not surprised that CBS canceled them. Remember, this is the same network who insisted Jim Morrison to omit the world "higher" just two years earlier. CBS has always been a WOKE network.
