  • WHO IS DEADLIEST? Deadliest Warrior doesn't feel too far off from Guntube to be honest. I'm still mad they let the spetsnaz win. Also Waffen SS vs Vietcong kinda a weird matchup but the show did try and pull werewolf vs zombie.

      She was wounded at least twice by projectiles, and these don't have an very long effective range, especially not against targets wearing armor, as we know Joan did, so it's likely she was actually pretty close to the action. When we look at the accounts of these events, it's even more likely she was close to the thick of it. In the siege of Paris, she was wounded by a crossbow bolt to the thigh while trying to cross the moat in front of the gate. In Orleans she was wounded during the assault on the Tourelles fort, while carrying a ladder towards the walls.

      @@IncredibleMD Napoleon did actually push the envelope on military tactics and strategy. A lot of modern tactics derive from him. He basically took Gustavus Adolphus and Julius Caesar and smashed them together into battlefield brilliance. The thing is is that he sucked against guerilla warfare, with Spain and Russia "defeating" him with such strategies. And who was the master of guerilla warfare? Washington.
      Assuming Napoleon and Washington had an equal sized army and Napoleon was invading America, Washington would win, but that's a lot of assumptions, especially since France was the 4th most populous country on Earth at the time, had over 1 million troops, and had control of the richest continent on Earth. Washington was rolling with 20k men and often had far fewer.

      @@clamchowder622As a people, the Comanche had been without horses for thousands of years prior to the reintroduction of the species by Europeans, so for any of their weapons to be better suited for horseback when the steppe tribes that the Mongols came from lived and fought alongside horses for thousands of years is highly suspicious.

    • @clamchowder622
      @clamchowder622 Месяц назад +8

      @DovahFett not really. The Comanche had only 200 years to practice horsemanship, but it quickly became the staple of their civilization. Wide open plains, much like the steppes, were perfect for riding and hunting from a horse. There's a reason plains Indians were known as the "Great Horse Cultures." Horses thrived in the Americas, and the Comanche took full advantage. Their main source of food, the Buffalo, was so much easier to kill from horseback, and constant successions of invasions utilized horses to invade, so it was a no brainer that horses became the backbone of their civilization. They already had the war lance and bows. They just learned to utilize them from horseback to the utmost. Like the Comanche rep in the show said, they learned to ride a horse before they learned to walk. We can argue all day about whether their simulation was realistic, but one incontrovertible fact I saw is that the Comanche was able to hit a moving target from horse with TWO arrows at once! The Comanches didn't build palaces or forge armor or raise hawks like the Mongols did. They rode their horses, whether they were hunting or fighting. They were on horseback 24/7. Horses were a critical component of Mongol society and warfare, whereas Comanche civilization, from circa 1600 onward, WAS the horse.

      also i know this is not the medieval arms channel but the difference between their gear is basically the same as with nk guys and us rangers. we're talking about mail hauberk, open face helmet and a sword for william. and XIV century joan would get a fully enclosed plate armor and helmet, plus a selection of more advanced weapons designed to deal with armor. basically the only way william wins if he could somehow trip and dagger her and she only needs to land one decent hit (and you can't expect to parry every attack like in a movie). this is a very close match just because of a massive gear quality disparity.

You have to remember that most officers in the FFL were french and served in the Free French Forces during WWII, they tolerated germans in their units but it's extremely unlikely that any of them would have tolerated commanding ex-SS. It is true though that many germans served in the FFL after WWII, but it was already true since the the 19th century. By the end of the Indochina War in 1954, the average age of soldiers serving in the FFL was barely above 20 years old which means that the vast majority of german soldiers in the FFL at that point were teenagers or kids during WWII so very unlikely to have served in the army of nazi Germany.

    To be fair, regarding Joan of Arc and William the conqueror, Metallurgy and armor improved so much that there is a fairly decent chance William breaks his sword before Joan feels a bruise, while on the other hand, any swords, dagger or polearm she uses is optimized to pierce William's mail armor. This changes a bit if they both start on horseback, where William's experience applies more, but there too, the shape of her armor does give her better chance of deflection. If it devolves to wrestling William would have the advantage, definitely but he has to get there. I' not saying this should give her the win necessarily, but equipment does play a big role in her favor. Even more 5v5 , 15th century soldiers would have a really big adventage on 11th century soldiers. I'm suspecting crossbow bolts of these era might go through both shield and mail of the Norman knights.

    • @DerAptrgangr
      @DerAptrgangr Месяц назад +1

      Exactly. People have a really skewed view of armor because of D&D and movie plots. In a movie, armor is only as effective as the plot needs it to be for maximum drama. Full plate is weak as paper if the scene calls for that.
      In real life... What are you going to do with a sword against someone in plate armor? Lol - as you said, grapple and go to the ground. It's your best option. And Willy probably didn't know any fancy Mordhau techniques, because he was never dealing with plate armor.

      @@georgeprchal3924 I think you’re seriously underestimating the difference 400 years can make. By the 1400s plate armor was becoming far more common and advances in Metallurgy improved the general quality of armor and weapons. It would be far more difficult for a Norman to take out one of the better equipped Frenchmen than the other way around. I’m not doubting William the Conqueror’s tactical skill. His invasion of England was absurdly impressive, but the technological gap is just absurd.
