He didn't explain how he got the Master Sword and the Mirror Shield by the end of the run, but thankfully I've seen enough of his other videos to know that certain cutscenes in Wind Waker assume you have certain items, but they make absolutely sure you have the items needed for the cutscene by giving them to you. So by doing the cutscene at the end of Forsaken Fortress 2, for example, which gets you into Hyrule, the game gives you the basic Master Sword and also the basic shield. I think it's a cutscene in Ganon's Tower that gives you the fully powered Master Sword and the Mirror Shield.
Linkus, you are incredible at explaining these glitches and exploits! I’ve been watching speedrunning for a long time and knew all the tricks you talked about here but I left this video understanding them so much better. Your explanation for storage especially was fantastic. I had never fully grasped how this exploit worked however, your explanation was excellent at breaking down this complex glitch in a very concise, easy to understand way. What makes this even better is the fact that you actually look excited discussing the run. I will never get tired of hearing people talk about something they’re passionate about, and it’s clear in this video just how passionate you are about speedrunning and Windwaker especially. Thanks for making this!
Awesome video with great examples and breakdowns of the tricks used in Wind Waker! Looking forward to seeing the other runners break down their main games too!
I literally just finished commenting something very similar before I saw your comment! Linkus is amazing at explaining these very technical exploits in a clear, concise way.
That's impressive how much work it took to achieve such a feat! Thanks for the recap and explanation! Also, I have to thank you for making me rediscover the soundtrack The Grand Finale from Bowser's Inside Story (your outro), because I had it stuck in my head for a few days now and couldn't remember where it came from.
Fun game dev fact, it’s extremely common to accidentally implement “storage” in any game, even when following common/best practices. It just comes down to WHAT flips the switch between having control of the character or not. If you queue up cutscenes to ensure the player is touching the ground or something, it’s even easier to accidentally add. That’s why it’s hard to call WW “broken” in the sense that it was badly designed, as this effect is just wildly easy to create. It may never look precisely like this in your own game, but you’d be surprised how close you could get completely by accident!
Linkus’s explanation about playable state shows exactly why it’s so easy. It’s a simplification, but not by THAAAAT much, believe it or not. The only reason it gets caught in so many games during development is it will usually involve velocity or something, so the character starts sliding during “non-playable” so it’s easy to catch a potential break-point where storage COULD be possible, for instance, by changing state to hanging off a ledge mid-cutscene. There is no game without glitches :)
I love the idea of this kind of content (explaining glitches). Might be a more interesting idea to have smaller, "bite sized" videos explaining movement tech as well, depending on the game/context of the video or game. Sometimes things are just too complex to be a small video, but there's definitely some that I think could work out well.
You can only actually get up to 15 per second, or else he will not gain any height due to the game running at 30 fps and needing a frame in between presses to cancel the animation of the jump attack. 15 is also frame perfect mashing.
Linkus says here that it's not possible to get enough speed for a super swim just by flicking the stick, because he's human. Guess that means he's not human anymore.
@@all3nplayzgames577 i mean, yeah, kinda. having an accent makes you say words different. i dont think he's actually saying "wind maker", i think he's just saying "wind waker" with a noticeable accent
Wait at what point did you get the mirror-shield,, you can normally only get that in one of the later dungeons right,, the one with the bird girl. Does the game just give it to you at some point?
@@warmwater9509 yep, when you enter a cut scene, the game just gives you the items necessary which at the last fight, link has a fully charged sword and mirror shield and if you don't have them it will just give them to you if you don't have them (though I don't know the technical reasons why)
This whole channel, along with the "Linkus7 Archives" censorship banner, smells like CLG cashing in on contractually-obligated content from these runners right before they were released.
You expect a viewer who doesn't know about speedrunning to not know what a frame is, but to know Forsaken Fortress as 2 separate areas, and know what 'stale collision' is??? It's a good video but you should probably think a little bit more about what you're taking time to explain.
You can't use some items in boss rooms, including the tingle tuner. The final hover is in the puppet ganon boss room so you have to use some other method of healing
Wait wait wait... 12:45 how can you pres your B button 8-9 times/second let ALONE 14-15 times/second??? Idc if it's a controller or keyboard, no human can press a button THAT MANY times a second 😳 what are you useing, a turbo button or something??? How can you press it even more than like 2/3 times a second???
He has demonstrated his technique in his Twitch streams. He hits the B button with both thumbs alternating, by moving his entire right arm up and down while holding his thumbs stiff in the correct position.
You guys completely destroy these amazing games. What is even the point of playing it.. well you are not playing it you are violating it in a very hard way. It doesn't look enjoyable. All of it only for bragging rights of a speedrun which you compete for the fastest one with a dozen of people.
There are glitchless categories for those that want to play it more normally. But there is a big interest in beating those games with every little thing you can do and as always for speedrunning, the competition and the skill bar for a run is what makes it fun.
It's still insane how barrier skip was discovered, it took so long to discover but it saved so much time in runs
Barrier Skip was called the Holy Grail of speedrunning. And for good reason.

It's great to see more Linkus7 videos about speedrunning, he is so friendly and good at explaining these speedrun tricks.
And very handsome!
That last glitch with zombie-hovering up to the heart on the platform is insane! One of the coolest things I've ever seen from speedrunning
I agree. The creativity in coming up with this trick is insane!

Wind Waker Link: "Hold my Grandmas stew"
I love when a speedrunner like linkus explains glitches bc I don't know what in the world is happening.
Damn I've watched wind waker runs for over a decade and this is the first time I've understood how storage works on a technical level

Wow Linkus did a fantastic job explaining this for beginners like me. It actually makes sense, very cool, very impressive.

I’ve seen so many similar videos on glitches in this game but linkus takes the cake when it come to explaining them
the way you talk and explain stuff is perfect, great video
Windwaker: Press a button 48.3 times a second and you get to 1 island
Breath of The Wild: Now press 2 buttons, unequip, aim, step up… AND FLY!
You can only actually get up to 15 per second, or else he will not gain any height due to the game running at 30 fps and needing a frame in between presses to cancel the animation of the jump attack. 15 is also frame perfect mashing.
The developer who left the single pixel in-between the barriers for the barrier skip is screaming and punching the air rn 😂
Some of the best speedrunning commentary I've ever heard, can't wait to see your channel grow.
That's cool that if you're dead and you collect a heartpiece with zombie hover, the heartpiece you get revives you.
Linkus says here that it's not possible to get enough speed for a super swim just by flicking the stick, because he's human. Guess that means he's not human anymore.
That was really well explained with great visuals!
Sad this video only blew up after CLG speed running got shafted
You had just had to put the Mario and Luigi ost gonna go back and listen to it now for 24 hours
This is why you use if statements or use a calculation like multiply with -1 and add 1.
awesome video and explination teachers you a bit about game development at the same time
Mario&Luigi Bowser's Inside Story main menu theme? I'm watching the video.
Approximately 50 times a second

Tbf to Linkus, the video editor might have left some explanations on the cutting room floor for the sake of a more succinct video
Why not get the tingle tuner and use it for the final zombie hover?
You can't use some items in boss rooms, including the tingle tuner. The final hover is in the puppet ganon boss room so you have to use some other method of healing
