For a while in the late '70s a company made a device you could mount over your bridge and give you a button over each bass string, you could press the button and lower a spinning disk to each string, giving a bowed sound to your electric bass without having to bow -- because the flat topography of an electric bass doesn't lend itself as well to an actual bow as an upright bass does.

I'm not belittling the skill involved here, but when you're dealing with a fretted instrument, you don't have to be as exact with either your finger placement on the string or the pressure and angle of the bow in order to get the right note, because the frets do so much of the work.

To add to the previous reply, there was an expectation in the early years of the electric bass that some upright bass players would want to continue playing in their previous style, but with electric amplification, including even the use of a bow. That being the case, some early electric basses had an extendable leg where the rear strap button is on any modern bass (center at the "butt" of the instrument) that could be used to balance them on the floor like an upright. For whatever reason, few if any players tried this, so for approximately 65 years, we have been robbed of the tones that might otherwise have been achieved by such an arrangement.

There's a meme about things becoming increasingly derivative of the original thing until you eventually come full circle back to the original. I think this video demonstrates that in a way lol. • @oregonjohnson

Haha I was thinking of that same thing. Like this sounds lovely and is cool to see this done on a bass guitar - but also I’m not that surprised, as someone who started playing bass with an upright in an orchestra. And tbh it would sound even better with a violin and upright string bass playing the parts. But it’s nonetheless cool to see it all done on one instrument.

So in some of the comments on the comments, people have identified that this bit of music appears in a longer song in a single called “Return to the empty city we once called home” by an artist named “people legend”. Except this part of that song sounds EXACTLY like this, down to the littlest nuance of performance, just with worse sound quality…plus that single seems to have come out AFTER Mr. Berthoud posted this video. People Legend has a few complete albums, and they honestly sound like they’re all made of songs which themselves are just made of other people’s music. It’s a bit of an unsolved mystery…but it seems pretty clear that at least as far as this video goes, Mr. Berthoud did it first!

Very nice! A couple tips from a strings player: the more perpendicular you can get the bow to the string the more consistent a tone you will get. Also you can apply a tiny bit more rosin to the bow to improve your tone, however be aware that this will leave a residue on the strings (if you wipe the strings down soon you should be good though). The things that influence sound the most are contact point (where on the string you have the bow, this will affect the overall vibration and how much the bow will need to move for sound), speed of the bow (how fast you're pulling it across the string), and weight on the string (not really as applicable here, but eh, now you know)

I was bored during lockdown so got a cheap violin ... I figured it was a reversed fretless bass (5th v 4ths so mirror image).
I don't seem able to get rosin to stick to the bow - or I got a defective one - alas my violin pal now lives other side of UK so.no chance for him to show me.
Instead I stick with the samples on the EMU Emulator. But if you have any YT hints on rosin etc please send them my way. Do you think bow would be less or more effective on nylon coated bass strings?
