Overheard a couple surfers the other day, one of them had a herniated disc & had been riding a boogie (as i ride because of two bum shoulders)...one of his buddies said "So is it fun riding a boogie? the aesthetic is so lame, you look dumb out there"... That stunned me, that was his main concern as a surfer. Im happy as a clam bobbing around in the surf, catching a wave here & there, or not at all. It has nothing to do with looking cool. Its being in the waves & in the ocean. An experience you only can have if you're out there. Kudos to anyone who gears up & goes out. Where i surf water is 45-47f year round.. 5/4 hooded fullsuit is the only way to stay in for more than an hour & waves are few & far between so we take what we can get. Its the best form of therapy i know of.
Thanks for sharing your experience :) I started surfing on a boogieboard. My first session was in Denmark in cold water, terrible conditions and a rapidly darkening sky. I didn't even catch a wave. But I was so excited about the experience of being in the ocean and feeling alive that I convinced my brother to start surfing too. After a while, we both adapted the stupid idea that real surfers are standing upright on their surf craft. So we both transitioned into "normal" surfing. All we did was following a standard and what everybody else was doing. Today, many years later, I am glad to experience the ocean in many different ways. Nature is much more diverse than we are. Let's enjoy that :)
I started riding a waveski - a surf vehicle sort of like a kayak, but designed ONLY for surfing - decades ago. Do not give a shit about optics or aesthetics. I have had hundreds of sessions - maybe thousands - and have been applauded, ridiculed, yelled out, questioned; who cares. IN THE WATER. Also, mats, body boards, hand planes/hand boards, SUPS - you name it - as long as you are IN THE WATER!!!!!
Absolutely!!!!!Fun Fun Fun... it doesn't look dumb, usually those are ignoramuses, don't know didley about surfing all kinds of crafts in history...As a child in Hawaii we rode anything that could float... People around the world are stunned 😯 when they see someone here on drift wood, Mats, & large air filled pillow cases to belly slide on sand... & Our Paipo boards. I love how you ride the Mat,,, just like a paipo, a hand out forward in the direction of the wave of shoulders in arms under like body surfing for more speed.. beautiful brought back so many child memories. You would have a lot of cheers here in the island,,, it's about having fun spending time with nature & family,,, keep up the old traditions. Mahalo for your bravery amongst the stupid.
Thank you for a great video. I’ve just turned 75, when I was in my forties and fifties I used a boogie board as often as I could. I’ve just purchased a new set of fins and a mat , surprise surprise my short wet suit from 25 years ago still fits me. Hopping to rekindle the passion
I‘m glad you enjoyed the video. Cool that your old wetsuit still fits. Good luck rekindling the passion. At first, the mat will feel very different from the boogie board, but stick with it, and it will pay off.
I have the MOST fun of anyone out in the line-up...always. I get that grin from the other guys (board surfers) of being a "silly old man" and yet the speed I get blows everyone's mind. A great work-out, fun in almost any kind of surf and gentle on my fragile lower back. Totally stoked. My wife calls it my "float" and I don't care because I'm ripping (a legend in my own mind). yahooooo...further
As a kid I surfed, bodysurfed, rode boogie boards and paipo boards, made my own handboards, etc. I was always "meh" about surfing contests - to me you'd have to find out who's having the most fun to call them a winner.
Love the videos, I gave up surfing 5 years ago after serious lower back issues. After watching these videos I decided to buy a surf mat (krypt) a few weeks ago and like the experts say it is extremely difficult. Been riding advanced mode at Urbnsurf Melbourne to hone my skills. Thanks again for these awesome videos and interviews with mat riders. I’m stoked to feel the excitement of the waves again.
Beautiful, the way you guys are riding the wave with the Mat,,, is almost exact to riding a paipo, the speed the skiing on the water,, Hawaiians enjoyed speed!!! I still have my late 60's Paipo, NOW I'm gonna get surf Mat,,, Awesome
That skimming feeling brought me to Punta de Lobos, Pichilemu and waves in Chile are really something.... I have seen other Warren's surf mat videos and enjoyed them. Cheers.
I ride all kinds of cheap cheap old boards I've gathered over the years. I choose a board to the conditions. I've got a boogie board for when it's small and hollow as well. Trust me it's not just lid, goatboaters and mat riders that get judged. It's anyone that doesn't have a newish 5'11 thruster and hangout with the "crew" in the carpark 🤣. It seems to be a worldwide thing.

I'm happy that you love the videos and that they have re-ignited your stoke. I have never surfed an artificial wave but would love to try it some day.

Punta de Lobos looks like an amazing mat wave. I hope I'll be able to visit Chile some day.
So good, feels amazing I agree, great edit ❤
Ride what you love 😊
Nice surfing Warren - love it
Was that George Greenough at 3:00?
Well observed! Yes that's George Greenough on the left :) Warren mat surfs with him frequently.
@@FRINGESURFERTV WOW...riding a mat. How old is he now? ageless

I am so uncool that my wheels ride is a minivan!
