The Endorphins, The Cardio, the Joy of connecting with the ocean on ANY level is magical ! Excellent video and from a surfer (72) with a bad back, bad knees, the exercise is key ! Your smile and stoke transcends ALL ! Thank You for such a sweet video :)
This is hands-down the most inspiring mat surfing video I have ever seen. I have been a mat fanatic for a few years now, and have a hard time explaining it to my stand up board surfing friends. I think I will show them your video!
Wow, it makes me very happy to hear that :) Please let me know if you are able to convince some of your surfing friends to give the mat a try. Stay stoked!
@@FRINGESURFERTV Will do. I’ve been trying. The benefits in quality of experience are overwhelming, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I call myself a “mat missionary.” haha..
I bought my Krypt MT5 surf mat when I was visiting Noosa QLD 4 years ago as an experiment from having to hiring a board every time I visited Oz. So much fun from such a tiny package. Easy to pack into my bag when flying back home. Not cheap to buy but I've had my money's worth many times over.
It's great to hear that you are having a good time on your mat. I would love to revisit Noosa and surf there on a mat. That must have been a lot of fun.
Probably going to be a stupid question. Why do Surf Mats look as if they are only half blown up? Also isn't it easier to keep hold of if there are handles which some have, as I can't see any leash.
That's not a stupid question but a very good question :) Let me try to answer it. Think of the surfmat as a flexible cushion of air between you and the wave. A lot of the frictionless glide and speed of a surfmat comes from it's flexibility and pliability. Therefore, if you only partially inflate a surfmat it will be more flexible and quickly adjust to water surface under you. It sounds totally counterintuitive but a limp surfmat is much faster than a fully inflated one. The more skilled you get as a surfmat rider them more thin, light and pliable you want your surfmat to be. The cool thing is that you can adjust and vary the inflation level to you personal taste, even while riding on a wave, by squeezing the mat with your hands. This is why surfmats are different to every other surf craft. Handles are limiting the flexibility of a surfmat and are therefore not ideal. The same applies to a leash. In this video Demi rides the mat on super low inflation because that's what she likes. I personally prefer to ride them with a bit more inflation. I hope this answers your question?
Yeah, I like that they don't know. It is kind nice that way. I do run into other matters once in awhile. I don't think they understand visceral feelings different from body surfing and kayaking or board surfing. I like boards but it is entirely a different thing.
Yes you don't inflate the mat fully because a fully inflated mat will be much slower. A good starting point is to inflate the mat so that you can bend it to a 90 degree angle. In the video Demi using a very low inflation and she likes it that way. Imagine the mat as a bubble of air between you and the wave. You want the mat to be soft and pliable so that the air bubble can respond and quickly change its shape to the wave and your body. Because of that surfmats can feel almost frictionless :)
why do surfers have to be elitist pricks? who cares what you look like? why on earth would anyone be out in the waves to look cool to other people, its not about that, its being in the ocean & being in the waves. Theres nothing else like it & props to anyone who dones a thick hooded wetsuit & braves freezing cold water.! I'm a sponger, but mat surfing looks fun as shit!
Every time we see something that does not fit our norm, we are quick to reject it. I totally agree with you. This is very superficial thinking and has nothing to do with enjoying nature in the ocean. I became much more open to seeing the beauty in different types of wave riding through mat surfing. It doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you are enjoying and respecting mother nature everything is cool.
@@FRINGESURFERTV totally👍🏼. Never meet another matter on the water. I love my 4thGear Flyer and get some quare looks from spongers and boarders but never hostility. Ireland very chilled- literally 🥶😂thanks. Great vids. 👍🏼👏🏼
What is the learning curve on one of these mats.. By that I mean to get proficient in turning carving and the such. It has no rails!! Yet I've seen dudes get barreled...🤙

I've seen quite a number of videos about mat surfing, but this one stands out as the best to my opinion.
Hi Erwin, thanks a lot for your kind words. They mean a lot to me :)

Thank you :) I'm glad that you liked the story.
some say the matt is the fastest wave craft if you can put it in the right spot and know how to apply the right presure in the right spot
