Yup. I have been thinking the last few days about how to make a very simple, small manual "machine". The idea being not to lean on the wheel but instead use straps of some kind to the dropout or chainstay. Not sure how that would work, but it could be good. For the wheel itself a "small" bit of plank should be enough if you have the lateral stability. The CG should not be moving too much, I think.... :) Basically a cross out of wood and then lateral straps, like a kind of bigger wheel chock. Also, using strap to tie the tire down could save on material for keeping the wheel stationary.
Built mine for my 24" street trials bike. Did not bother with side to side support, and have rubber weather stripping on bottom (lives on a hardwood floor), so users need to good at track stands too! It's a good workout for abs once you can hold it for over 1 minute!
Was watching this with my 3 year old and at the 7 minute mark wen everyone was trying it, she was laughing hysterically saying “he can’t do it. Funny guy”. Looks like I’ll be building one next.
Thanks for this. I’ve been think about making or buying one. Would love to see someone train with this for a couple weeks and then take it out to see how they do on a real manual.
Now I need to build one. Also. Bought a new used HT and was looking it over. The front brake was routed around the outside. Thanks for that tip in the brake video so I didn’t look like a dingus.
@@T-Crack .. Tom Cardy just did one too- wtf's with the hand saws? Oh and Ryan's drill? that was embarrassing... I agree though, fun to bring the friends for a try.
I tried building one of these last year, and the only problem I found with this is the cage for the bottom wheel puts a LOT of torque on the back wheel. When you lean left and right, it feels like something in the axle is bending!
No shit I just got some wood this morning (that's what she said), gonna build it up today. Looks like u guys had a shitload of fun with it, I can't wait
There are 2 of these at my local park ( Orlando MTB Park ) . Someone built them at home and then dropped them off there. Since the park is in the city most people who go there do not actually ride so, they use the "manual machines" to prop up their bikes like a bike stand :-).
@@elmeradams8781 I should have used the past tense as my MM went to the skip and I sold the BMX I bought specifically to learn on. I thought a BMX would be easier, with smaller wheels... nope! The MM was actually great fun and very good exercise! It is actually really satisfying to hold the balance point, it is really perplexing why it doesn't translate to real riding. If you are learning on the MM I recommend removing the chain and also keeping track of your progress, took me about 4 weeks to reach 60 seconds, after 60s it's not a battle of balance anymore but of strength! I gonna try putting on my 70's 3 ft. sissy bar from my Schwin 5 speed & some how put on G. Fisher 29'r & sea if that helps. Just lean back. That's how I learned wheelie's @ 9yrs old

Hi, great video, but question is how does it REALLY translates to the real life manual skill ? (I totally suck at them, does training on this machine in my garage make me better at them or I will only be getting better in doing them in the machine ?)
Please do some follow up videos. Everyone has these now but no one I've seen trains on it consistently and does a follow up to let us know if it's actually helped!
Is there a reason you used the DJ bike for the manual machine? Is it a better trainer than say an enduro or aggressive hardtail? Also now I have a cool project to do with my daughter after watching your video. She told me "Dad! You have got to build one of those, that is awesome!" She is 9 and we are just getting into mountain biking.

Hey @ Paul The Punter , I only saw one person do this in your video, but watch out for someone leaning to one side or the other, it can end up badly for the bike(rim). I built one of these last year and was practicing, and I started to lean to one side, and in doing that, I bent the rim so badly, that I had to replace it :( Now, I ONLY use that bent rim when using the manual machine, in hopes of bending it back the other way, haha
that rear piece of wood seems dangerious for your butt :) Besides, the manual machine should be narrow, to avoid destroying your rear wheel when falling sideways

Forget the manual machine I am blown away by your “stock” of new bike parts in your garage !!
remove chain off chainring
Cut back piece lower before someone lands their bum on it and gets hurt.
No, make the back piece higher so you won't fall to the rear.
honky tonk no other wise you can’t get over the back wheel properly

Matthew Pond this is a fantastic idea.
How do you think you’ll go holding the brake on. really!
I made one also, to get the most you cant use the brakes and need to take the chain off
I kept saying now lets see it with out the chain and brakes lol!
Ahh yes, we were going to.....then decided it was too much faff 😂

Fredrick Welch if your rims can bend just from you body weight like that u shouldn’t be riding park on that bike. Lol

Yeah it isn't tho. It's rear brake on the right pretty much everywhere except UK and Australia.

Why do I feel like that back rim wants to bend.
Because it does. It would be better to just have a metal dowel in the correct position and just mount the frame directly to that. Forget the rim.
If you did that, you could even get rid of the piece of wood sticking straight up that wants to injure you.
Walter Magnum my friend made one with no side supports on the back and it doesn’t have that affect
