  • @ronflood5697

I’d have bolted up a dummy pump to the rear main when line honing. I’ve seen them distort .0015” with the pump installed.
I prefer to use torque plates when honing as well, in all applications.
I get that this is a stock rebuild since several operations were skipped, but those two are pretty beneficial.

Reading a hand held gauge is a skill. No two people will get exactly the same reading. Only way to get accuracy is to remove the human error component but that means more money for a system like Reneshaw. It is worth the money if youncan afford it. Its a must for some, like jet engine manufacturing.

....machine shop seems to be mandatory for rebuild, so you are not really "rebuilding it yourself". machine shop =lots of $$. That's why I say it is better to:(1)-remove engine, (2)-order longblock(with a warranty)(3)-remove accessories from old engine and turn in for a core, (4)-bolt everything on the longblock, re-install in car, hook up everything, and go. Still better, If you can afford it, buy a crate engine. Unless you have a machine shop yourself, forget rebuilding an engine yourself, unless it is a very rare or desireable engine.....

I always install and torque up a dummy pump to the rear main before line honing. It distorts the rear cap up to .002” on some.
Cam tunnel needs to be checked/indexed and corrected if needed, before the decks can be cut from that and the main datum lines.
Stripping the block before cleaning is mandatory in our shop.

NOW under pressure ( via specialised ACID )you have the oil and water guides opened up a little more, think how much they will cost and using the right acid and time line to make sure the right amount of surface is removed and then you have the right cooling and oil transfer, which is what you need to do, especially if your going to add a hi pressure oil pump and hi pressure water or pump ?

I understand the need for any competent engine builder, to check everything before it goes together. Other than that principle, when one buys a Eagle crank, it's probably costing a grand or more. It should come out of their factory right on the money, so why the need to check every main/rod journal again? Is it just habit, or personal preference? Personally, I would still check every one, because there is the outside chance one or more could be off. Just wondering, thanks.

sir I would like to know if gm 4.3 liter heads, casting number 14099064 with the eyebrows will work on an engine with the TBI intake set up.. the 4.3 engines are very confusing from so many changes over the years.. I have a 93 block. I have read that the 14099064 heads were an improved flow head, designed to be used with the CPI fuel injection system. I also read that some of these heads were used in the higher output K series and W series engines with the TBI set up.. I dont want to waste a set of head gaskets if these heads will not work with my TBI intake set up.. thanks

hey, you line bore first, then align hone to finish size, boring makes the holes round, else your just honing a a hole that isnt round, all measurements are determined by the crank center line!!!!!

    • @ayebee1207
      @ayebee1207 9 лет назад

Tom, very few engines EVER need line boring if they are being re-manufactured.
That's an old wives tale like Crankshafts warping, or bent.
Over revving and detonation have destroyed more engines than anything else.
I buy several sets of rod, main, sets and hand fit. Same with pistons, I final hone to each piston. A decent scale that will balance to 1/2 gram and some careful grinding on pistons. I use sealed power moly-faced file to fit rings. ARP rod bolts, and use a big block Mark IV Oil pump with the Moroso solid metal drive rod on it.
Two bolt blocks will live with 500hp. 4 bolt main is waste of $$$. A forged crank is only needed if you are boosting 8psi, or over 400hp. 76cc heads, flat top pistons for no more than 8 to one with boost, or it's detonation city with the 350. A 268H dual pattern Cam with good new springs and a good set of new oem valves and seats.

It would be best if you have the shop clean it. You could do it yourself, but any mistakes or missed spots could be very bad for the block when being machined. Some places may clean it for free if machining it.

II have watched several videos on dis assembling a lifter. Everyone does it pretty much the same way, and it works very effectively for everyone. EXCEPT ME ! The piston inside my lifters, will NOT come out. In have tried all the tricks I have seen, like pushing the check ball down to relieve suction. I even tried heating the lifter up a bit, based on the simple premise that air expands when heated. That didn't work either. I thought maybe I just had a stubborn lifter. I tried 3 more. Same thing. I am at a loss. Do I simply need new lifters? Thank You
