      @@leglamps I believe if you read closely the 2023 NEC the locking out of the main is not required on a portable cord and plug generator. Though I understand the NEC is a minimum requirement.
      445.18(A) Disconnecting Means. Generators other than cord-and-plug-connected portable generators shall have one or more disconnecting means. Each disconnecting means shall simultaneously open all associated ungrounded conductors. Each disconnecting means shall be lockable open in accordance with 110.25.

    (from Shawn) That will come in handy for sure. We have generators and power units, but nothing that would run the entire house. Great video and a wonderful back up plan for your home.

    As long as you had the extra length whip you should of had a drip loop ... also you should have an isolating breaker ...

    You should install an interlock - it prevents the generator circuit breaker from being turned ON with the Main breaker ON - to prevent you from sending generator power back on the power lines coming in. This is for the safety of the repair guys fixing the power outage. (and will ruin your generator if line power feeds back into your running generator) Also, you most likely will not be able to power the entire house with a smaller generator, you may want to identify the circuit breakers that are the most essential (well pump, furnace, fridge, freezer, lights, etc). Turnoff or monitor use of high amp items like electric Range, Water Heater, clothes dryer, AC system, etc. Still, a good video.

      You make some good suggestions. I may look in to doing this in the future. We set up this system as a way to get power into our house, but not necessarily power the entire house - just our most important electrical devices. Larger amperage versions of this power inlet are also available, but the 30 amp is what was compatible with our generator. Thanks for watching!

      @@ozarkmtnspecial Just some things to think about BEFORE you are forced into making this work. I also recommend that you do a 'Trial Run', if you have not already done so. If you have a gasoline generator, you should start it & run it every 30-60 days (you don't have to power your house), this will insure your generator will start & run when you really need it. It helps to have an extra quart or two of oil & a gas can full of fuel - just be sure to rotate the fuel in the gas can every 60 days.

    It's pretty much the same as a suicide cord, since you still can have live pins right under that cover and if you have the cord plugged in, live pins at the other end of the cord.
    You need an interlock preventing the breakers for both grid and the inlet being turned on simultaneously.

    • @ozarkmtnspecial
      @ozarkmtnspecial  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for the input. We do plan on installing an interlock kit. However, I would say that a suicide cord has exposed male pins on both ends. The power inlet box is only energized if the breaker is switched and both ends of the cord are female, which is considerably safer than a suicide cord.

      I agree, the interlock is super important. I have to use my generator frequently. Under the duress of connecting power during a storm or outage, it would be easy to forget to disconnect the main breaker and thus energize the utility lines. I have a 200 amp 2-pole switch that has 3 positions: utility power, off, generator power. I had to go this way since I have so many subpanels. It looks like something out of Dr. Frankenstein's lab...
