Guide to Cleaning the FN 509 Tactical
The FN 509 Tactical is a high-performance handgun known for its durability, accuracy, and versatility. Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for ensuring your firearm operates at its best and remains in good condition. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of cleaning your FN 509 Tactical.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
1. Ensure Safety
Check for Ammunition: Make sure the handgun is unloaded. Remove the magazine and visually inspect the chamber to confirm it is empty.
Engage the Safety: Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction during the cleaning process.
2. Disassemble the Handgun
Remove the Magazine: Press the magazine release button to detach the magazine from the grip.
Check the Chamber: Confirm again that the chamber is empty.
Field Strip the FN 509 Tactical:
Pull the slide back slightly and lock it in the open position.
While holding the slide back, press down on the takedown lever located on the left side of the frame and release the slide forward off the frame.
Remove the recoil spring and guide rod by pulling it out from the slide.
Tilt the barrel upward and remove it from the slide.
3. Clean the Barrel
Use a Cleaning Rod: Attach a patch soaked in gun cleaning solvent to a cleaning jag and run it through the barrel from the chamber to the muzzle.
Scrub the Bore: Use a bronze or nylon brush on the cleaning rod to scrub the inside of the barrel, focusing on areas with carbon buildup and residue.
Dry the Barrel: Run clean, dry patches through the barrel until they come out clean.
Oil the Bore: Apply a light coat of gun oil to a clean patch and run it through the barrel for protection against corrosion.
4. Clean the Slide and Frame
Use a Brush and Solvent: Dip a toothbrush or cleaning brush into gun cleaning solvent and scrub the inside of the slide and frame, focusing on areas where fouling accumulates.
Wipe Down Surfaces: Use rags or paper towels to wipe down the inside of the slide and frame, removing dirt and debris.
Clean the Firing Pin: Use a brush or patch soaked in solvent to clean around the firing pin and striker channel, ensuring it is free of fouling.
5. Clean the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod
Wipe Down: Use a cloth or paper towel to clean the recoil spring and guide rod, removing any residue.
6. Clean the Exterior
Wipe Down the Grip and Frame: Use a cloth or paper towel dampened with solvent to wipe down the grip and frame of the handgun, removing fingerprints and dirt.
Inspect for Damage: Check for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage that may require attention.
7. Reassemble the Handgun
Insert the Barrel: Place the barrel back into the slide, tilting it slightly downward to secure it in place.
Reinsert the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod: Position the recoil spring and guide rod back into the slide.
Attach the Slide to the Frame: Align the slide with the frame and carefully slide it back into place until it locks securely.
8. Final Lubrication and Inspection
Apply Lubrication: Use a small amount of gun oil on a clean patch or cloth to lubricate the moving parts, such as the slide rails and locking lugs.
Wipe Down the Exterior: Use a soft cloth to wipe down the exterior surfaces of the handgun to remove any fingerprints or excess oil.
9. Store Properly
Final Inspection: Check to ensure everything is properly reassembled and functioning correctly.
Store in a Safe Place: Place the handgun in a secure and dry location, preferably in a gun safe, to protect it from damage.
Additional Tips:
Frequency of Cleaning: Clean your FN 509 Tactical after each use or at least every few months, depending on how often you shoot.
Avoid Over-lubrication: Excess oil can attract dirt and debris, so use it sparingly.
Use Quality Products: Invest in a good-quality cleaning kit and solvents for the best results.
By following these steps, you can maintain your FN 509 Tactical in excellent condition, ensuring it performs reliably when you need it most. Regular maintenance enhances its performance and contributes to the longevity of your firearm.

Excellent video. Thank you!
Need help getting the mag out back together. Had to take it apart because my brother dumped the mag into a pile of dirt. Got dirt all in the mag. Opened it, cleaned it bud can’t get it to latch back on the bottom correctly.
Is there any issue if I pulled the stricker pin back? It made a clicking sound. And for the looks of it it looks finde but just asking😅
If it passes a function check, it’s fine.
Love my 509 tactical in fde ! Shot I love all my fn guns ! Pistols and rifles can’t go wrong with an fn y’all !!! I have a few fn15s and man are they super accurate !
Great video. Thank you for putting this together for us beginners. Will be buying from you as well.
Dude thank you!
You’re welcome
I enjoyed the video ... i didn't learn anything, but it is excellent review, and aesthetically pleasing. golly thats a purty gun.
Man think u soo much. Mines came out flawless 😁😁😁
Great video🙏
This is truly an excellent instructional video. Now I am very confident cleaning my FN 509 Tactical. Question - why is the trigger pull on this gun so heavy (7lbs), and how to improve it?
Try an Apex trigger.
I came here looking for why I wasn't able to release my slide, wondering if there was something that I was missing. Turns out I was, I needed to slide the action back just a little before pressing the trigger and then let it slide the rest of the way off.
THANKYOU. What else can I say ... except THANKYOU (again).
You’re welcome Sky Bird.
My fns 9c has little rust on the slider what is the best you can tell how to remove the rust thank you your video help alot ,need of help thanks
Have it Cerakoted.
It’s one of the finest weapon I’ve shot, love the red dot and 24 rd mag 👍well done for all 🙏🏼🇺🇸👮♀️🇺🇸🙏🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Professional video. Great job!
Can you make a video about cleaning, for the fn 509C tactical with a compensator
... same thing
Wait why can’t you get the slide off without the barrel thread off ? Mine comes right off ?
Thread protector.
Beautifully done !
Thank you
thanks for making this video, i am seriously considering this to be my first gun either this or the XDM, what one would you pick?
I really like the Walther PDP Compact and the CZ P10C.
@@SkullCrushInc I meant out of those two and I'm only interested in guns that are truly fully ambidextrous
@@gerardmcquade9102 Can’t go wrong with either. Both good.
@@SkullCrushInc ok thanks
Great video! Thanks
Do you have any recommendations for a cc holster for the 509C?
Yes, the ones on our website. skullcrush.com
Any recommendations for holsters?
Yeah: skullcrush.com
Thank you so much!
Thanks
So use c.o.p on everything??
No sir, definitely not. I mentioned the places you want to avoid putting CLP on.
*509 tact 🔥*
am i the only that had trouble with the front slide lock into the horizontal position after disassembly?
That’s why mine was hard to take off 🤦♂️ didn’t T pull the trigger
Good teacher, thanks good job in my opinion, okay I worry about the naysayers
Does anyone else have a small curved scratch on the trigger?
No i do not. Why do you think others would.
Quality of ammo doesn’t matter these days😭 ammo is ammo
Been waiting for over two weeks on my background check, starting to really worry biden is going to screw me on my 509 tactical with vortex viper pre installed
Get your License to Carry so you won’t have to do a background check everytime you make a purchase.
😹😹😹😹😹😹might just be your state. I just turned 21 in GA & walked in the gun store and walked out all under 35 mins with the fn 509 tactical
Found one at a store that gives it to you after 3 days of no reply
