Thank you so much for posting this. Along with some other research, this video has really helped me to understand what my dog went through just a while ago. Being better informed on what's most likely happening will help ease my family's fears until we can afford a visit to our vet for my little buddy.

We have bichon shih tzu cross named Teddy. He's 11yrs now and he's a great friend, of course. A tad ornery but not dangerous. Several Years ago we were told he had a heart murmur which is essentially a leaky valve. It has been getting worst since he turned 10 and we don't expect him to see 13. For about half a year now he's been getting periodic seizures usually as a result of getting excited, barking at the door, watching out the window or me getting home. We tell him to calm down. Usually a finger in the air sets him to settling down. I did take him to the vet and the vet said they could do a full course of blood work and attending medications. In talking to another who had a similiar problem, they said that the meds really didn't halt his decline so we just opted to feed him well (still has an excellent appetite), love him and try not to excite him. Based on the vet and our observations, when he gets excited the inefficiency of his heart is such that he quickly gets an oxygen debt and a brain starved of oxygen can seize. We have watching for pain but there doesn't appear to be any. A few minutes after the seizure he is up and about, trotting down the hall and wagging his tail when I talk to him. We will have to euthanize I imagine sooner or later but in the meantime it's remarkable how well he covers after each episode and after all he is entitled to as much life as his little body will give him.

Thank you so much for posting this. It has helped me to understand the possible next steps for my dog. She had a seizure yesterday but her blood panel was almost 100% normal. I've seen plenty of human seizures but seeing it in a small animal was very frightening.

Thanks for replying. I found out that these episodes she is having are partial seizures. She had a Grand Mal type seizure just a few hours after I left that 1st message. I'm headed in to get blood tests now. Thanks again for your input. I hope my dog will be ok.

I think he hit the nail on the head, when he said if you can afford it, damn I go without now as im on a disability pension, so my epileptic fur baby gets his meds, good food, blood work etc etc, it sucks that we all just cant go to a neurologist and get an MRI too.

Most of the dogs that we treat for seizures in our practice are epileptics - either acquired or inherited. Occasionally, we get a patient where either control of the seizures are difficult or they are a result of something much more serious. Having put a dog down 2 weeks ago for uncontrollable storm seizures (every 7-10 days, he would have 4-9 seizures in just a few hours), it is important to remember that every dog is different. Thanks,Sam

I have not seen any peer-based research on hemp oil use in seizure control, however, if it's something you want to try, just make sure that it is safe to begin with to give (I do not know myself). People are finding lots of uses for hemp. My son did a project on it. I believe the Europeans are ahead of us on this one. Thanks, Sam

But what do you do if the anti-convulsant doesn't work? My 5 1/2 year old black lab started having seizures in February 2017. Zonisamide and Keppra did nothing. Antibiotics did nothing. He progressed to having clusters. Over a 2 day period in August that year he had 16; 9 one day and 7 the next. After the seizures he was nearly mindless for hours. He wandered and didn't respond to any stimulus. 4 Vets could not figure out what was going on. Blood work was normal. He didn't have a tumor. We tried calmatives, food, environmental factors, many many courses of antibiotics. Everything anyone could think of. Nothing helped. In desperation one vet put him on Prednisone. The seizures didn't stop but the clusters mostly did and the time between increased. Plus the after seizure was much better. It helped though we knew there was going to be a cost. What else could we do? We got him through 26 months before losing him to acute Pancreatitis. What do you do when the normal courses of treatment don't work? What could we have done? I'm still haunted, wondering and thinking I should have found an answer. I still want that answer though I expect I'll never get it.

I took my dog to vet because he was stumbling around and falling down. They said it was vestibular disease, put him on baytril, a muscle relaxer, and prednisone. The next morning he had a seizure so they added phenobarbital. Now they think its neurological. He has roughly 15-20 seizures a day, only 2 has made his whole body jerk, all others is just his head shaking and biting and foaming at the mouth. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

My dog has seizures every 7 days, give or take a day. He has had one every Wednesday (occasionally on Thursdays) like tonight. When we first got him he did not have one for about 3 weeks unless it happened while we were out and did not know that he had one or that he had any type of seizure disorder. Every week like clock work. The vet says he is about one year old.

WE tried everything. First diet, then no spot on flea and tick treatment, then pills for epilepsy, but a spinal tap showed ensephalitis which is fatal so we have to put our little Teddy to sleep. Blood work up showed nothing.

I'm very sorry to hear that, I really am. I wasn't able to afford an MRI but MRI is best method to determine if there is a brain tumor. If MRI shows no tumor, then it's very likely the dog is epileptic. From what I've researched and what a number of different vets told me was that although it is possible for dogs having their 1st seizure over the age of 5 to be epileptic it's very unlikely. I did all I could but I ended up having to put my dog down.

Hello, my dog just had 2 seizures in two days, almost exactly 24 hours appart ...
The seizures lasted between 3 and 6 minutes. I took my dog to the vet between the 2 seizures ... they did a blood test & Urine analysis, and told me that she had an urine infection / kidneys: Could this be the initial cause of the seizures ?? (infected blood reaching the brain) She prescribed 500Mg Clavaseptin (amoxicillin clavulanic acid), (2 / day) for the infection ... plz reply, and Thanks for the video !

My 6 year old Golden retriever. Had two Random seizures the other night. They seemed to be just her legs cramping up and spreading out whilst standing, was alert but looked uncomfortable and not completely in control. She didnt vomit and defacate or drool, has no problems breathing whilst sleeping. With this being the only symptom thus far would it be reasonable to supect that a tumor would be unlikely? My Vet suspects a late onset of epilepsy and has prescribed phenobarbitone.

This video is great. Far more informative then our vet. My dog just had a stroke today. His first ever. He is 13 yo. The doctor gave us some anti-inflammatory medicine called "Metacam". Already my dog is getting back to normal, but I am worried about it happening again. What should I do? Is there anyway to prevent this from happening again? I've heard of some kind of herbal supplement that lessons stroke/seizures. What do you think?

This is a difficult time for you and your family. You will know when it is time to put her down. With only one seizure a month, many owners would also not do anticonvulsant therapy. If you think she still has some quality of life, then keep going. Take care, Sam

My dog was having seizures and he also has serious allergies. I think I got the seizures under control by changing his diet to a gluten free diet. The allergies are bothersome, he scratches and chews his face and feet to the point of bleeding and he starts whining in pain. The Vet put him on a half tab benadryl daily. I don't know what to do about his allergies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My Yorkie had been having Grand Mal seizures every 4-6 days. The vet put him on a the Purina NF low protein prescription diet. That helped. They are down to once every month or so now. . The past few days he's been having *twitches*/small jerky muscles. Is he getting worse? I haven't had the blood work , but will soon. Does Omega 3 oil help? It has to be in ratio to the 6s, but I've read to NEVER give Omega 6 to a dog that has seizures. I'm confused.....can you offer any more advice?

My dog will act like something is stuck in her mouth by flicking her tongue in and out for about a minute or two. In the process she begins to excessively drool what looks to be both a thick clear and foamy saliva. This started happening about 3 days ago and happens 2 to 3 times a day. She is approx 6 years old now and I have never seen anything like this before. Could this be a seizure?

Our Basset is seven and has just started fitting. He pees and poos and froths at the mouth. It's horrible to watch but the one time I went to console him he bit me and I ended up at A&E. What worries me is his behaviour afterwards. He becomes hyperactive and seems confused. He rushes up and down whimpering like an headless chicken for at least an hour. The other two dogs have pet insurance but he doesn't. Sod's Law.

I could hear but not see you my dog is from what we can tell half mini poodle/half bichon frise and is about 3 years old. He's had about 5 seizures in his life. Tonights was the worst, he lost his bowels and through up, he's just exhausted now. I am going to get him to his vet on Mon. We are his third owners, his first was abusive, the second hardly fed him so unfortunately he got used to eating the poop in the yard, he's over that now. We feed him good food and too many treats I think. I gave him some of my black licorice today and he had the seizure tonight. I thought black licorice was good for dogs. I don't know now.

PLEASE HELP... We already have our fur baby Lucy on phenobarbitol, potasium bromide, valium, and an herbal supplement to try and control her seizures and she is getting worse. It is Idopathic Epilepsy so they don't know what is causing it. All the bloodwork is normal. We are considering trying Cannibidiol / CBD which is very new and very little research has been done that we know of. My vet doesn't know anything at all about it, so we are on our own. I'm scared to try it, and scared to not. I've heard a few great testimonies about it, but also saw one negative thing... someone said there dog died from it because it stops the organs from clearing out the other meds and the dog overdosed because of a build up of the other anti-seizure drugs in the organs. It's hard to know what to believe. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

you need to keep your dog in an area where he/she can't be injured during the seizure. Keep lights dim-no bright lights and speak very softly to your dog words of love and assurance,like- I love you and 'it's going to be ok' and 'your'e a good dog' keep your hands, etc away from the mouth as the dog can accidentally bite'Dogs cant swallow their tongue, putting something in their mouth can make seizure worse/longer.Give small amount of vanilla ice cream after to bring blood sugar up to normal

This is my 2 year old mini aussie I have all 3 sisters and this one weighs about 60 pounds and the others weigh 40 and 30 pounds. she is over weight I know but always has been, I always assumed it was because she was the greedy one.. First she will try to be with me or my husband so she jumps in bed and vomits then she starts to look like she is drunk and starts falling over, off the bed or couch, . Please help I need to know what is wrong, it only last about 5 to 10 mins then shes fine.

YOu are welcome Its an excellent recovery food after seizures. There is a growing belief that dog epilepsy is from vaccines since there are so many dogs having seizures lately.Or,from hormone imbalance from neutering/spay. Take care :D

detox drops are liquid herbal drops that help the body deal with and get rid of toxins (in my dog's case they help mainly with animal protein/fat if he get intoxicated with them and help the kidneys function as normally as possible). They are made for people so if you need ones for a pet ask a trusted vet just to make sure the drops don't have anything that may harm the animal.

Kimberly Segre ,No, but research on the internet about natural remedies, good diet (just quality food) and balanced, aloe vera, thiamin B1, melatonine, Meds always have side effects and also is bad for the liver
