Thanks for checking out Dreamcatcher’s OOTD! I've seen others explain the song this way and I think it's the easiest way to describe it and is in line with what I believed about it after watching it several times. OOTD has at least 3 layers to it. Layer one is the surface layer. This is a flex song that, on first listen, sounds fun and empowering. However, if you really dig into the MV and the lyrics you see that's it's much more than that, which is where layer two comes in. Layer two is that the MV and the lyrics are critiques of the current state of the industry and the types of songs that have become so popular over the last several years. Everything in the MV is curated and edited to look perfect. The manufactured drama between idols that’s prevalent but behind the scenes they are friends and care about each other. Gahyeon is used to promote products in a store. Jiu is a literal product in packaging, all while telling you she's Venus and Nephthys and to call her a goddess. Venus, being the roman god of love and Nephthys being one of the Egyptian gods of death. Handong has what looks like horrible bruising on her legs, but the upper half of her body looks perfect signifying the physical damage and trauma that idols endure and that it's often hidden from the public. There's more in the MV but these are the things that stood out to me initially. The third layer is the story layer that's tied to this new Versus Duology. You may have noticed the references to a Crown in the MV as well as the text that was popping up in certain areas about the Crown. These references are related to the Alternate Reality Game (ARG) that DCC used to promote the album during the month leading up to release. About a month before the MV dropped the user ymenehcra (Arch Enemy backwards) popped up on twitter and was tied to the first comeback teasers. Since then, they’ve been tweeting their experiences and leaving cryptic messages on Dreamcatcher’s RUclips videos. The messages dealt with an obsession with finding the crown. The user has also experienced blackouts and memory loss during this time frame. Since the MV dropped there have been more clues found including audio files of the Dreamcatcher members discussing their 100th and final victim in their quest for the Crown. That final victim is Shasha, who is the person in the MV, who was sacrificed at the end when Jiu places the crown on her head. Also, there are creepy clues in the albums including hidden messages from previous victims that read like something from a horror movie. They've really gone all out on this comeback and the lore surrounding the first album is crazy. This is the first time they've been so overt with the lore outside of the MVs. I'm really looking forward to how all of this is going to wrap up. Siyeon said that we wouldn't fully understand the concept until the second part drops. You should check out the rest of the album. All the songs are great, and they experiment with vocals and song structure a great deal on this album. They've also released a dance video for one of the b-sides on the album called Shatter that you should watch. The girl on the motorcycle who's name you asked is Sua. She's the main dancer, lead rapper, and vocalist. The rest of the members are Dami - First person shown with green pig tails. She's the main rapper, lead dancer, & vocalist. Siyeon - The one singing on the car. Main Vocalist Yoohyeon - Blue hair. Lead Vocalist. Jiu - "I'm Venus, Nephthys Call me a Goddess" - Leader, lead dancer, lead vocalist, visual Gahyeon - Pink hair - Maknae, lead rapper, vocalist Handong - Blond hair, sings the first pre-chorus. Vocalist and only foreign member. She's Chinese. Since you asked for a guide, I'll give you some recommendations. First is Dodging Disbandment & Other Extreme Sports: A History of Dreamcatcher by Mera. This video is older, but it gives the best overview of how the group formed and the hardships and struggles that they've faced, being an unconventional group in K-pop. As a side note, Mera makes fantastic videos in general, so this is a great watch all around. Second is An Extensive Guide to Dreamcatcher 2023 by Dreamer. This isn't my favorite guide but it's the most up to date and is still very good. It briefly covers history, has a snippet from each title-track, and gives a pretty good look at the members. Lastly is the Insomnicsy YT channel. Insomnicsy is the DeFacto fan channel for the group. Kit, who runs the channel, releases multiple compilations each week, which are fully translated, and her editing is fantastic. She also has a This is ________ Series that looks at each member of the group. There are 4 seasons currently, 2020, 2021, 2022, & 2023, and each season has one 7-minute video for each member. There's also a bunch of other series on her channel like Dreamcatcher being unfiltered idols, which is guaranteed to make you smile & laugh so much your face will hurt. I hope you'll check out some of their guides and other content you may not have seen. I'll be subscribing to see what you react to next! Enjoy the journey!
Aw thank you so much for letting me in on all of this, I definitely need to check out more of their content these girls are insanely talented, and the lore is so interesting
At first glance you could think this is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. The album is called VersuS VillainS, which makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, vanity, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, maybe it's about useless instagram influencers posting videos of their outfit of the day, which also promotes fast fashion. The fact that fashion is moving ever faster makes it the most destructive industry to the planet apart from the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up. The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit. And there was the ymenehcra account posting about touching a crown is dangerous and other cryptic messages before the comeback. It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song. And Handong standing in front of the camera with bruises all over her legs seems to be a comment on the merciless industry as well. The music is highly interesting as well. The Rock is dirty and distorted. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is punk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it.
I think the album will kill you. ENJOY! 😊 I will recommend the 2023 'This Is..." series by Insomnicsy. This channel is the Insomnia Bible lol BUT that's just really a cute fun way to get to know their personalities. For a more informative breakdown of the group, I recommend The 2023 Extensive Dreamcatcher Guide 👍🏾
