    Pretty divisive song for insomnias but I've noticed that a lot of non-insomnias are really digging it. The definitely went less hard on the rock in this one but it's still there to a degree. Much more of an industrial rock or alt-rock sound here, using a rock guitar sound but filtering it through some pretty heavy electronic distortion and post processing which is a hallmark of the industrial rock sound.
    Some will say there's no rock but listening to the instrumental it's definitely there and maybe it's because they took inspiration from a lesser known subgenre of rock but that's what dreamcatcher has been doing for a while now. Borrowing from different sub-genres of the wider rock genre and combining it with some other genre. Love that they're not afraid to be bold and do something that might even alienate part of their fanbase and give us something completely fresh (for them). Also, just wanted to say they could completely own a girl crush concept, they definitely have the confidence and visuals for it.

      I really appreciate how it's true to their main concept as a group while still being creative and inventive and showing growth as artists. Like you said, the rock elements are certainly there and it's not even subtle, there's just a lot of genre mixing going on that makes it feel different. Just because it's not presented in a typical manner, doesn't make it not rock, it makes it progressive, and I think that's cool.

      To me this song is a double-edged sword. On one hand I love the concept behind it. I love how they give the middle finger to the K-pop mainstream. I love in general how well constructed the song is. I just don't like listening to it. It's not my type of music. I've tried to learn to love it, I just can't. It's pretty much the only Dreamcatcher song that isn't in my rotation.
      I realise that it would've been impossible to make fun of the K-pop/fashion industry without giving the song influences from girl crush, so I'm still happy that they did this song (and I still enjoy the rest of the track on the record).
      I wasn't all that worried that their next comeback (Justice) would be anything like OOTD though, because it was so obvious that OOTD was intended to be "We can crush the girl crush concept, we can make it our own, but we're only doing it to make fun of people who actually think that being famous and rich and gorgeous makes them better people".
      The song does bear some superficial similarities to industrial rock, but that's where it ends. It's superficial similarities. It feels as though someone has tried bridging girl crush with one of Nine Inch Nails' less successful experiments.
      If they truly want to go in the direction of industrial rock I feel that maybe blending a bit with KMFDM would work; I think Ollounder could do wonders with some inspiration from Megalomaniac and a big dose of Dami.
      But I can't help but keep dreaming of a swerve further into the direction of VirtuouS combined with some of their earlier stuff. Progressive K-rock would probably be a hard sell in South Korea (Imagine showing up to Show Champion or The Show with a 15 minute long song that starts with a 3 minute instrumental section, has several sections with just vocal harmonies without lyrics, etc.), but just the thought of something along the lines of the latest Nightwish album but with Dreamcatcher vocals, Fireflies quality harmonies, Reason style rap sections, Siyeon rock singing, ...
      To me that would be Album of the Year for sure.
      It will never happen, obviously, a small company cannot afford to take such risks, but as an InSomnia it's always safe to dream.

    I feel like even when the instrumental isn't really rock , it still is , kind of , in the vibe . It still feel more alternative K-pop compared to cute concepts of some groups. Just my opinion obviously. I was so happy when Maddox liked my story on IG about Dreamcatcher. Some of the producers work with Ateez too, still this edgy alternative K-pop feel. Love this producing team . Their work is really cool and has a unique feel to it.

      This distortion style of rock sound is part of a sub-genre of rock in modern times we know this as alternative-punk, but the distortion and synth instrument style is already seen and heard during rise of the grunge movement in the UK during the late 70's-early 80's the sound is then adopted by a lot of other alternative rock based genres and sub-cultures like punk-rock and industrial rock the sound is still popular till 2007-009 and when the wave of electro pop sound hits people forgets that there were a lot of sub-genres and alternative style of rock music and the only style of rock music that seems to still hold is j-rock and classic style rock

    • @kumbawolf
      @kumbawolf Год назад +4

      I do love this song but there is something to be said about having that "classic guitar sound". One can possibly distort a flute to sound whatever and call that "rock". One could argue about other characteristics of "rock" but it's just semantics battle at this point because nobody bothers to invent a new word as sound technology evolves. It's "something rock" 😆

    • @veen-a2092
      @veen-a2092 Год назад +16

      @@kumbawolf I don't really understand what your comment said "people can distort flute and called it rock" the based of a rock sound IS the classic electric guitar riff and drums these are distorted to create a sound to birth a new wave and sub genre of that sound a flute in itself is an ethnic instrument even if you distorted the sound it will not be "rock" itself you still need to add those base,guitar and drums that are the primary instrument for rock. "People don't bother to create new words for it" as I have previously said in my reply to this main comment thread it has a new name "alternative-punk" but before this genre is adapted in a new modern wave it has always been dubbed as "industrial rock","synth-rock","grunge" and yes "punk" so there is indeed a new word and also an old words for this sub-genre

      @@veen-a2092. I'm not music expert like these guys. So this opinion is just based on personal experience and perspective. I'm not saying you are wrong. I'm just saying that unlike accoustic guitars that has a "natural" sound, electric guitars are naturally "fake" or "electronic" and "digital". With current technology, you can filter any instrument enough through whatever those electronic things are called, and you can make it sound... well probably just about anything. The guitar itself pretty much acts as just the "keyboard" to make the notes. So before the tech became really fancy, the "classic electric guitar sound" was the natural base sound of rock along with the natural sound of the bass and drums, as you said.
      As far as names go, the new "alternative-punk" as you say, may not necessarily have to be under rock. It can be a thing by itself. It's just that "alternative" and "punk" are already separate subgenres of rock with the familiar "classic sound" of the instruments. I think the new stuff now are unique enough to detach itself from "rock". So when the new sounds uses the same words, well we have semantic arguments. When us old school folks say it doesn't sound enough like rock, as in the "classic sound" It's ok because it can be something else and for me that something else is pretty awesome. We just haven't really called that something else a name that has the same meaning for everybody. And I know I"m not alone at this since this issue has been a constant thing for Insomnia for years now. lol OOTD does not have that "classic sound of rock" I have no idea what you would call that sound, but it's awesome!

    - The disappointment train all started from Scream when they tried to incoporate new sound in their title tracks instead of sticking with very Jrock base in the nightmare arc. Everytime DC comeback, people said it's not Dreamcatcher anymore and they've lost their identity. It's because they don't want to do the same thing over and over again anymore. That's the point. The only thing we know is they'll and always has rock in title track, but don't know in which form it'll come since rock is the most diverse genre ever, it can be fused with almost everything to create something totally new.
    - I find myself really enjoy the grungy, dark-ish, distored feel lying underneath the song this time, which perfectly portraits the theme and story line of this album VillainS. We all can be fool by the surface of OOTD, thinking it's a brag song but it's actually not. Hints are scattered all over the mv and one can easily miss them or be confused by what's happening through out the mv: random fights, random messages, random editing, and a huge crown seems to appear out of nowhere in addition of almost bragging, nonsense lyrics, which's really difficult for people who haven't been following the tweets and AR game on X to interpret the real message this time

    • @ForestSen
      @ForestSen Год назад +17

      Even the music hints to this theme. The fact that the guy said at one part he can predict the sounds coming, or the other guys complaining about the OOTD part. All of that is boring or expected. But how is it boring or expected? Because it’s been heard before. The pop part of this song takes from other more popular kpop sounds and uses them to hide the grungy back tones as a mask. Plus the OOTD is supposed to sound robotic and generic (at least to me on this part)

    11:16 I think the "obviousness" of how the chords resolve themselves is the point of the song, which is all about people trying to fake it to fit in with society and outward expectations. The music matches the message, while adding a little grit and distortion with some of the sounds to make the point that everything you see isn't as it seems.

    Yeah, I just want to say I absolutely disagree with anyone who says OOTD isn't heavy, at least for a kpop track. Like seriously, listen to damn near anything that's come out in kpop recently and tell me the bass in this song isn't heavy, especially from a sound design standpoint. It's got a definite dark, raspy edge to it, that you simply don't find very often in kpop. I have yet to hear an argument for why this isn't a heavy song that doesn't come across as someone trying to stick Dreamcatcher into their own preconceived notion of what the groups sound is supposed to be. I think the biggest problem comes from a section of the fanbase who sees Dreamcatcher as a rock group, when they have always been a Kpop group with rock influences. Rock flavored kpop is not the same as rock. Furthermore, as a former metalhead I know there is a tendency among our ranks to have an attitude which can be summed up as "It didn't have a palm muted, shredding guitar riff so it isn't heavy." Since getting deep into the dubstep world however, I realized heavy has a much wider definition than metal. In the electronic sphere sound design is where you derive true heaviness. A CloZee song done with Sullivan King's sound design is going to be way, way heavier. It's all pretty relative too, CloZee is on the softer side of dubstep, but is still much heavier than anything in kpop. So relative to other kpop, OOTD is really freaking heavy, but compared to Sullivan King's Die By My Hand, it is super duper poppy. Anyway, rant over, my apologies if you had the misfortune of reading this.

      Honestly, the complaints are just proof that dreamcatcher is truly a rock group at its core haha. There’s nothing rock and metal fans hate more than anything *new* even if it’s just a new subgenres (eyeing Within Temptation fans real hard right now) and fans are way more consistent complaint-wise than other genres. I’m so used to hearing complaints about new releases at this point that I’d be surprised if there weren’t any from insomnia.

    • @SWCcomposer
      @SWCcomposer Год назад

      I would have been happy with sound design that had that heaviness in way that wasn't rock/metal and also if the toplining in the chorus weren't so flat and, in the "OOTD this my fashion" part, square. But after subsequently listening to the mini-album, the b side Shatter feels like it actually achieves what OOTD tried to be, and sounds way heavier with probably less of a metal sound than OOTD. My dubstep tastes tend to be more on the color bass side than the super heavy stuff, although color bass can successfully turn heavy (like Chime's track Mindburn). And I really like some consistently heavier stuff, like Oolacile's Perceiver Pt. 1 Consciousness Program (and can appreciate artists who do some really heavy stuff like AKVMA or Code: Pandorum, although those aren't artists I listen to frequently). Anyway, I agree that there are a lot of ways to be heavy outside of metal, and I think it's important for a Dreamcatcher title track to have some elements that aren't Standard Dreamcatcher (which is why, while I like the b side Rising, I'm glad it wasn't the title track, because it's completely within the Standard Dreamcatcher Sound), but OOTD's basses rarely much bite or weight, and the toplining keeps backing off before it has much intensity.

As your can see in the MV its showed a lot and maybe we can even assume they put a crown on the girl in the MV (Sasha) but we also know from a hidden USB file that the girls are arguing between themselves as well - who should get the crown? And it seems when the 100th person gets 'sacrificed' one person will get the crown that is so mysterious

    I’ve seen many people say OOTD is really divisive and many people had mixed opinions about it, but I wasn’t honestly surprised that this time many people will complain again. From my perspective, Dreamcatcher has been doing divisive title tracks for almost two years. MAISON was criticised for being too monotone and that the chorus wasn’t standing out that much; VISION was for many just MAISON 2.0; BONVOYAGE was criticised for just being same old Dreamcatcher that won’t bring nothing new to the table. And now we have OOTD which also doesn’t seem like a Dreamcatcher’s title track. I think that every group reaches a point during which every comeback will be considered a disappointment from one part of the fandom or another, it’s just that Dreamcatcher reached that point much later in their career than it would’ve been expected.

They introduce a completely new style for the first track, they redo that style with a different approach for the second and the third is cohesive in story, but different in style from the last two.
      It has often been said that their titles all stick to a similar style (which most of us love) and I like them trying to completely switch it up again while keeping (albeit maybe less than normal) connections to their songs before that.

    Instrumentally is very industrial rock. The lyrics, MV and vocal melodies are mocking the typical mainstream K-pop girl crush flex concepts. Hence why it’s a bit predictable but definitely fits the signature genre. Dreamcatcher become the villains of K-pop this way, and conceptually trick people into wanting the crown, then sacrifice them to obtain the true crown themselves. The character we are here is called Shasha and she starts wanting the crown and does dangerous things to get it. In the end, she is crowned by JiU and passes out.

      There's quite a bit of rock in this song. Punk and industrial rock that's been layered under the pop in most sections, but is more forward in a few others. The villains' video is a trap. The pop on top is the shiny lure that draws you in, but their true intentions are reflected in the grungy punk and industrial sounds underneath.

    This is a no-skip album for sure!
    OOTD is a totally different track vs. their previous songs but DC wants to try a new sound and concept. My fellow Somnia friend told me that this song is like a dig/middle finger to the "conventional" way of Kpop. I agree! Totally Dreamcatcher. 100% flexing to everyone that this is who they are. And OOTD gets better each listen IMHO.
    Looking forward to the album reaction, especially the B-side songs. Rollercoaster ride. Recommended.

    The thing I love about Dreamcatcher is that even if the title track is not your thing, you'll find something to listen to every release. Want dynamic, powerful Dreamcatcher? Rising is there! You liked OOTD but wish it was a little less predictable? Shatter! And if you're a fan of their more cheerful b-sides, you've got We Are Young.

    I would say that OOTD reminds me of an alternative rock genre that mixes grunge with electronic. And I think one example to describe that would be songs by the artist PVRIS

  • @eleslie9409
    @eleslie9409 Год назад +11

    I would also say that the "predictable" parts of this song are predictable for the concept reason of the song. Like progressions were made to be predictable as a commentary rather than the producer phoning it in. Even though I didn't follow the teasers as much leading up to the release I thought this was a great satire of online socials culture and even culture within Kpop while still being Dreamcatcher. But we are now 7 years into their career it would be crazy if everyone loved every song they did, they change it up with different themes they want to talk about and give us varying sounds so not everyone will love the same songs.

    Definitely the most divisive DC song in terms of sound. I think people either love or hate it. The mv is amazing, but for me the song is too disjointed - as if they combined 3 or more songs and it didn't quite fit together. It's more like an intellectual concept (I kind of had a similar reaction to RV's Chill Kill.) But I give them credit for trying something new and moving from their tried and true formula of J-Rock vibes.

    • @sept2039

      Right, but I have particular aversion to the industrial sound so I still prefer chill kill much more personally, I hoped DC wouldn't go in this direction but it was inevitable as it is still considered rock, but then they kinda did that with vision and imo it worked for them without sounding too mainstream, so this one is kinda just "meh" for me

    Soooo this is my first time finnaaaally checking out the MV, I saw this first on live stages and I felt sooo disappointed about the way this reads as a live performance on the couple of music shows I watched. I wasn't sure if the mixing was just terrible, or if it's just not suited to showing a good live performance because of how sooo much of the vocal is very subtle and quiet spoken textures, but I do think it's a neat sound and definitely IMO still retains Dreamcatcher flavor while taking on some new sounds and elements for them. I like it so much more as a studio mixed track and it's not because I thought any of the live vocals were bad at all, it just is hard to convey the kind of contrasts you can achieve on a recording on stage I think when it comes to these kinds of sounds.

    As an Insonmia from day 1, this is the only DC title song (and mini album) I didnt vibe with. It's not about the change in style, but it's missing a lot of elements that make "Dreamcatcher". I'm so used to unique melodies and musical complexity. This was the first real miss for me.

      I find it hard to enjoy this one as well. The music is complex, gritty, and hard hitting as we know from Dreamcatcher but the melodies are predictable indeed. There's too much repetitions too. Even if those were intentional to match the storyline, I believe there are better ways to convey that musically.

    Great actors can act out hateful things... that doesn't mean we dislike the actor or their performance. If we like the villains Dreamcatcher is portraying in the song, something is wrong with us.
    The flatness to the song is part of the point. For instance, compare the monotone chant "OOTD this my fashion" to the passionate chants in Maison and Vision.
    The form goes with the content. It's brilliant.
