This is so inspiring! I don't have a Sizzix (not sure of the spelling, even!). Am I right in thinking that using a rolling pin would allow more freedom with the size and shape? Would I still need some sort of hard plate on the top and bottom? These papers are absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I was just thinking that perhaps this would work nicely with a hot iron. It would provide more heat to starch and make the papers stiffer. Rolling pin could work, too, if you are strong. My upper body strength is not the best so avoid it. In any case, I would still sandwich the papers between fabric pieces. If you try this, let us know if you don’t mind. I would love to know how it goes😊❤️
I think a rolling pin might work but a press of some sort would be much better...just 2 boards and four long bolts and then wing bolts to fit... to hand tighten them.....like.a home made flower press....oh i almost forgot....i also got eight of the largest washers that fit my bolts ...helped hold the boards down tight..there are lots of.videos on how to make one....and then absorbant fabric between the papers and boards.....u could also leave them all to dry in it if your boards can take the moisture...aka..not particle or plain plywood...I believe I painted mine...when we downsides and moved I got rid of it...have often regretted it as every year all mu books have my pressed flowers in them!!! Guess I will make me another.as I want large papers too.
Starch+water+napkins+press wth Sizzix=new interesting paper. How amazing! As long as this channel exists I am sure I will have no shortage of gasps (learning opportunities). Thanks so so much for all the experiments you publish! Unique channel indeed, thoroughly saturated with awesome ideas. The result totally justifies the investment into a pair of brand-new (for pressing only, not for cutting) plates for Sizzix. My favorite textururizer in this video is plastic mesh (we buy lemons in similar packaging, so I will definitely have some soon). I also like the square from the plastic tablecloth so I’ll have to look for something similar in our dollar stores.
Thank you so much for watching and for leaving me a nice comment, as always. I appreciate it immensely. I love the mesh look. I’ve been collecting meshes from different packages. They are great for Gelli printing, too 😊❤️
Wonderful! I tried drawing on thicker ones with thin black markers and there was no bleeding through. I’d experiment with thicker starch solution to have even less absorbent paper for calligraphy.
TIP: I raised the back end of my Big Shot up just enough so when the coffee was getting squished out it just ran off the Big Shot into a towel I had folded up at the front of it. This saved me a lot of clean up in between each new paper being rolled. I then realized if I used a baking pan in the front I could even do away with the towel making clean up even easier.
What a good video. I love to use up those back pieces from the napkins, and this is actually better than the front of the napkins. You have great ideas on what to do with napkins. I make cards from these.
You are so amazing in creating beautiful things. You're a craft scientist, always experimenting and finding new ways of creating amazing things. You keep surprises and that is wonderful. 🤗
I'd be interested to see what it would look like if some cheesecloth were pressed between the napkin layers. Also, adding some colored tissue paper torn into tiny scraps. I bet the colors would spread and make it look like stained glass paper.
Wonderful ideas! I used cheesecloth between 2 layers when I tried this with glue. I think it might work with starch, too. I’m definitely going to try. Thank you! Love the idea with colored tissue paper, too. Very interesting 😊❤️
I do love making paper, but mine tends to be a little on the thick side, so really like this method having thinner paper. While organizing and going through boxes in my craft room, I ended up with a box full of napkins, both white and brown from restaurants, so hope to play a bit tomorrow. My Sizzix is still sitting on my kitchen counter from when I was working on Christmas ornaments for the family... which should be finished by this weekend.... 😂 I was really sick prior to Christmas, so I have an excuse, lol. I also have 3 photo albums of dried flowers, mostly from my mom's funeral, ready to put in the craft room, but will trying some of those out as well. I am curious how to use spray or liquid starch, I have both. I'm guessing, maybe water down the liquid starch a bit with coffee water? If using spray starch, the napkin stays damp enough while folding, until you get it through the Sizzix?? 🤔 Well, this looks like such a fun project for sure, appreciate all the inspiration you bring and share D.... and the fact that you test everything out so we don't have too, lol. 💜💜💜
I’m really glad you liked the idea. I tried with liquid laundry starch and it worked just as good. I used it as is. I am thinking that perhaps a few drops of brown ink could make it less white. Thank you so much for watching ❤️😊
If you mix your cornstarch with a little cold water first - it will combine into your spray coffee smoothly without settling on the bottom of the bottle.
Thank you so much for the tip. I was thinking earlier that perhaps I needed to properly cook coffee with starch to avoid settling. Your idea seems better 😊❤️
I was coming here to say the same thing. It is like when you make a roux. Hot liquid, cold roux or cold liquid into hot roux. Either way I put cornstarch with cold water and combine. I suppose that is the Cajun side of me adding cold thickener into hot roux when making gumbo. Otherwise, the cornstarch gets gloopy.
Thank you very much for all your experiments and showing us the results. I love this paper and will do some myself. Much appreciated. Please keep on doing this.
My pleasure! Glad you liked the idea! Oh, sometimes the ideas pop in my head faster than I can write them down. I only wish my memory would serve me better 😂
What an amazing idea! You always bring new ways of doing things and I appreciate it so much 😊. I don’t have a sizzix either but I’m sure my rolling pin will work just fine. Going to go play with this now!
This made me think of the old wringer washing machine Mom used when I was a little kid! The wringer part of it was hand operated...it would work great for this on an industrial scale!! Love your videos!
@Saacibo Me, too!! I think they would be awesome when tie-dyeing also. I would put it in the yard by a flower garden, hook it to the hose and let the water drain into the flowers. I bet it wouldn't be too hard for me to find one, I'd just need to remember this spring and start going to some farm auctions!! Happy experimenting my fellow mad scientist!.
I really love your approach to art & craft. I have been enjoying all your experiments so much and it has given me the confidence to try new techniques. I have just decorated a load of recycled packaging after watching another one of your brilliant videos, I love what I have managed to acheive and it is all so much fun, I feel like I am playing. In my town they have a regular craft swap, and I was lucky enough to pick up a Big Shot sizzix for free! Can't wait to try this out. Thank you so much, I love your videos - your channel is my most favourite of all the ones I watch.
Hiya thank you so much for experimenting and trying out methods because that's a great idea. So I've done stuff like that before and it's never turned out a way you done it. So Thank you so much for sharing the great ideas! You are great x
Absolutely love this - off to try it now! I love using napkins and have a huge stash of 2nd and 3rd layers which were just waiting for some inspiration - thank you!
Dragena, this is absolutely a wonderful idea for making handmade papers from napkins. It’s so much easier! Looking forward to giving this a try, once I unpack my art supplies from moving!
Sooooooo many years ago, we put a very small amount of white glue in our water sprayer to hold the layers together after drying. We also got a better stencil/embossing effect if it were left in place until dry..... 🦋
You are so clever. Thank you so much for experimenting and discovering amazing things.i keep the ends of threads when I am embroidering sp I will try using these. ❤❤❤
Yes, paper towels work with this technique, too. I haven’t tried with watercolours, now I want to. I guess the results were lovely. Thanks so much for watching 😊❤️
really interesting. love the process and the results. years ago i made 'paper' by layering sheets of soft toilet tissue and dabbing with wet paintbrush on top of an embossing folder . then rolling through the machine . [sorry cant remember where i saw that idea so cant attribute.]
Glad you liked it! This is similar to what you’re describing, but with addition of starch which acts as a binder. Toilet paper, paper towels or even soft tissues would work with this just as well 😊❤️
I recently watched a video of yours on pressing flowers. How do you keep your flowers from fading. All that I have pressed have really boost their color. I love this video. I guess I need to invest in a sizzix.
I think no matter what you do, some flowers will always fade and loose the bright colours. White roses always turn brown but I like them anyway. Some become more translucent, other go dark or brown. I dried red poppies once, and they changed to purple. 😊
Thank you so much. In Sri Lanka we don't get beautiful napkins. I bought sm packs and I was wondering what to do with them. Now I can use it. Wish you and your family a very happy Christmas and a new year filled with good health and happiness ❤
I am not sure because I haven’t tried. Dry method, pressing - possibly. Cooking or baking method - hmm, doubt it. The only way to know for sure is to test it 😊❤️
I've done similar experiments with toilet paper, water and embossing folders, but your version is next level! Handmade paper 2.0. They are stunningly beautiful and there are almost no limits to creativity. Thanks for the inspiration and I can't wait to get started myself ❤️ Best wishes from the German Baltic coast 🌾🐟🐚💙
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I agree, this is very similar to what you described, with one additional component - starch as a binder. Best wishes to you as well from Sarajevo 😊❤️
I used plain cotton. Muslin or even old bed sheets would work ok. Textured fabrics would give almost like embossing effect. It’s worth experimenting with what ever you have. 😊
Im very inspired, as always, after watching one of your videos. I can not wait to go and make some paper with my corn startch. I also have tapioca and potato startch and i thonk i have some spray startch somewhere that i used for my scrubs, lol. I was also thinging that it would be good to use the herbs i have for teas, such as labender and chammomile, to make the boyanical papers, and maybe some of my dried eucalytptus and other herbs like basil, etc...mayne we can make pretty smelling, as well as looking papers? ❤
I’m glad you got inspired! Great idea adding herbs to make them smell nice. I tried with lavender once and I loved it. Thank you so much for watching ❤️😊
@Saacibo I'm having difficulty getting my layers to stick together good. Do you have any suggestions? Do I need more starch? Your profession: "art scientist" 👩🔬🖌 I love that you're constantly experimenting and so appreciate you sharing. Thank you! 🥰
Maybe add a bit more starch or make it with hotter liquid. It happened to me a few times, too. I think I didn’t spray enough or I didn’t mix before spraying. If you cook the starch a bit before spraying so that it dissolves completely it becomes more sticky but it’s a bit harder to clean the Sizzix afterwards. Thanks for the kind comment. “Art scientist” - I love that 😊❤️
Thank you, they are lovely and such an original idea! My question is, have you tried to write with a ball point or gel pen to see if you could use themi n a writing journal?
So many fabulous ideas! I can't wait to try all of these ideas. My only problem is that my embossing and die cutting machine is electric, so I can't really do anything with liquids! 😊 I guess it's time to invest in a hand crank machine. Thanks again for this video! ❤
You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for watching. It’s true, you can’t use it with electric one. Perhaps, it’s possible to do this with a hot iron. I’d keep the napkin layers in between the fabric pieces and just iron over without steam. They might even dry faster. I’m going to try it tomorrow 😊
Hallo , danke für das tolle Video. Wie stabil wird das Papier. Könnte man das Papier in ein Buch mit einbinden oder würden die Seiten nach und nach brechen
Hello! Thank you so much for watching. This is new to me too, so I can give a definitive answer. I have been including them in my journals and making embellishments. It’s been more than a month and they are look ok. I had a few unsuccessful ones that started separating immediately but the ones that were successful are still in one piece. Hope this helps 😊❤️
Just watched your paper making from napkins. Listened to you first while slow sewing and this afternoon watched again from start to finish. Meanwhile I googled and made my own starch . I don’t possess an embossing machine. (Am I calling your machine correctly)? I wonder if a rolling pin would work? Anyway I am determined to have a go. I have some pressed leaves and flowers from trying eco printing on old sheets. I will let you know how I go. Thank you once again for these sooooo very informative videos. Regards .
Almost in need of another amazing journal.. umm im thinking a soft fabric collage trifold cover botanical all grunge ❤❤❤!!! Let me know if your available
Hi Monica! How have you been! Oh, I don’t do custom orders anymore! So sorry about that, but I have 2 botanical journals almost ready. They are in my style, a bit grungy with lots of originals and eco prints. Hard cover, not a trifold. I hope to have them done by this coming Sunday. I’ll do a flip through. I will post some photos on my Facebook page in a few days. ❤️😊
I used regular napkins, dinner and decoupage, tried many different brands and they all worked ok. I don’t think it matters. You can also use kitchen towel or toilet paper rolls or even tissues. Basically, any soft and absorbent paper 😊❤️
@@Saacibo Unfortunately, the inside of the sissix could rust because more than likely it’s not stainless steel inside and you can’t get to that via a towel to dry. The idea is a good one, the only problem is maybe rusting the inner part of the sissix over time.
I think, using nothing, no starch, or anything is better idea, especially if you use a watercolor on it or something that might the starch might repellent it.
Thank you so much! There’s a way to do this without sizzix. You need hot iron and some parchment paper. I love it even more. Here’s the link to the tutorial if you’re interested ruclips.net/video/d3iME3Opswo/видео.htmlsi=GMCXdgV2wVy_5xFs
The starch works as glue, very interesting technique. I may need to invest on a Sizzix since my hands aren't that strong anymore for that kind of pressure. The results are very beautiful! Thank you for recording and sharing such process, appreciate it.
This is so inspiring! I don't have a Sizzix (not sure of the spelling, even!). Am I right in thinking that using a rolling pin would allow more freedom with the size and shape? Would I still need some sort of hard plate on the top and bottom? These papers are absolutely beautiful!

What can i say 😊These are really great ideas. Your brain works so brilliantly 🧡😍
Wow, thank you so much Steffi! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm teaching myself calligraphy for my journals...this will be perfect paper to use!

I’ve never made paper before, but definitely going to try this.
I’m really glad! Thanks for watching 😊❤️
This made me think of the old wringer washing machine Mom used when I was a little kid! The wringer part of it was hand operated...it would work great for this on an industrial scale!! Love your videos!
Thank you so much! Oh, I wish I could get my hands on one of those old wringer washers. I’d experiment day and night 😄
@Saacibo Me, too!! I think they would be awesome when tie-dyeing also. I would put it in the yard by a flower garden, hook it to the hose and let the water drain into the flowers. I hope you do! Thank you so much 😊❤️
Sooooooo many years ago, we put a very small amount of white glue in our water sprayer to hold the layers together after drying. We also got a better stencil/embossing effect if it were left in place until dry..... 🦋

You are so welcome! I think the threads would look nice. So many possibilities ❤️😊

On script embossing folder you could use permanent ink and put it on the embossing side and then close around the wet napkin. Id love to see that.
Great idea! Thank you 😊❤️
Such a great technique…thank you for sharing.
You are very welcome! Thank you so much for watching 😊❤️
This is amazing, thank you, do you think you could use these papers in eco printing?

Yes I have, and it worked well, especially on thicker ones that I made with ironing spray ( starch). No bleeding through.
@@Saacibo Let us know how it went. I will try as well but i am sure you will generate way more new ideas as you'll be doing that than I will. :)
Can you use liquid starch instead of powdered?
💜💜💜 wow!!! Thank you
You are so welcome! ❤️😊
Regards .
You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching ❤️😊
Lovely ❤
Thank you so much 😊❤️
Almost in need of another amazing journal.. umm im thinking a soft fabric collage trifold cover botanical all grunge ❤❤❤!!!
Does this method works with tissue paper? Thank you
I haven’t tried but I can’t see why not 😊❤️
Does anyone know what brand of napkins are best to use and are they regular or dinner napkins?
I used regular napkins, dinner and decoupage, tried many different brands and they all worked ok. I don’t think it matters. You can also use kitchen towel or toilet paper rolls or even tissues. Basically, any soft and absorbent paper 😊❤️
Super idee,
Wat is de naam van wit poeder????
White powder is corn starch. You can substitute with wheat, potato or rice starch.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
This is sooo cool..if it wasn't raining and I felt better Id make some..peobably end up with 200..lol
Glad you like it 😊❤️
It’s a good idea but the coffee leaking through may in time may ruin the sissex.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I thoroughly washed my sizzix after making the papers. Properly rinsed under running water and dried. 😊
@@Saacibo Unfortunately, the inside of the sissix could rust because more than likely it’s not stainless steel inside and you can’t get to that via a towel to dry. The idea is a good one, the only problem is maybe rusting the inner part of the sissix over time.
You could always use water and then spray with coffee later too
@@Atcraftcity If it's *stainless* steel, it won't rust.
@@londongael414 I mentioned on an earlier post that it probably isn't stainless steel.
I think, using nothing, no starch, or anything is better idea, especially if you use a watercolor on it or something that might the starch might repellent it.
I think without starch the paper would be too absorbent. I’d experiment with different amounts of starch to get the right texture for watercolours. 😊
1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons
FOOD COLORING WOULD WORK. THE BOTTLES YOU GET IN A KIT THAT ARE FOR DYING EASTER EGGS🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You never fail to amaze. Thank you so much for continuing to provide fresh and fun ideas. Great tutorial. Now to get 2 new plates for my Sizzix. 😀
You are so welcome! Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comment 😊❤️
I loved it ❤❤❤❤❤ but I don't have a big shot embossing machine. I've got the smallest one.
