    Thanks very much for the heads up on this app and the thorough review. Giving Whisper a try now.

      Thank you, that's very good of you to say. Whisper has improved since that video, too: I hope you like it as much as I do.

    Thanks a lot for the video! I’m going to watch it soon and will try to fix any thing you ran into (jordi the dev here). Just finished an update which will let you save .whisper files and which plays back the high quality audio, thanks for noticing that!

    I can see this being VERY useful. Will definitely try the free version. I just ponied up for an annual sub for Otter though, so imagine that'll be the workhorse at least until that runs out. I do like how well Otter integrated with video calls - that's a big plus.

    • @davidholt5545
      @davidholt5545 Год назад

      MacWhisper does a much more accurate transcription (including foreign language terms) - for free. I bought the software (for the pro level multilingual models) and even though my Otter sub runs out for me later this year I haven't used Otter since. Also can't fail to mention that MacWhisper is offline - no internet required. Therefore privacy of data is maintained - guaranteed.

      I did love Otter. Still do, really, but Whisper has stolen my heart.

      @@davidholt5545 So MacWhisper (gumroad) and Whisper Transcription (app store) are not the same thing with different names? If so, is there a comparison available?

      @@jbwimbleton They are the same thing. The app store version is not updated quite as frequently as the gumroad version due to the review process. He may be in the process of renaming one or the other. Not sure.

    Definitely better than the kludgy way I found to get around any limitations of the freemium tools that have been available to this point! I recently wrote a blog post about how to use Word for Web's Transcribe feature to upload audio and get the same level of transcription capabilities, but honestly, Whisper is so much easier and cleaner for Mac Users. Thanks for such a stellar review! (I've now updated my post and credited you and your video with the superior option :)

      Thank you. But I didn’t even know Word had that. Sounds like typical Word, though: yes, it can do something, but no, you’d never use it because it’s so clunky.

    • @acdntlpoet

      @@WilliamGallagher Clunky AND only in the Word on the Web version. I describe it more here, though admittedly will never use it again now that I know about Whisper! www.waywardcelt.com/work/transcribe-unlimited-audio-minutes-for-freeish

    Is there a version of Whisper for my PC as I don't have a MAC

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  11 месяцев назад

      Not directly: this particular Whisper Transcription is Mac only. However, it’s based on OpenAI’s Whisper technology so while I don’t know the names, there are doubtlessly PC apps that do it. I should say that I know Otter.ai works on PCs, too, although possibly only in a browser.

    I have jumped at this, as it seems one giant leap for mankind, well sort of. My Mac Air M1 8gb ram gives a warning triangle saying the medium download needs more ram. No problem I downloaded the small version and all seems well. I also put this on my Mac mini M1 16 gb ram and it works fine with the medium download. Thanks for the video.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад +1

      My pleasure. I’m intrigued by the RAM warning; I suppose it must be loading the whole thing into RAM at once where I unthinkingly presumed it would work from the library on disk.

    Is it possible to do a live transcription of like a zoom or other meeting?

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад

      If you need it as the meeting is happening, Zoom itself has an automatic captioning service. I did a webinar for a group the other day and got a notification on screen that someone was using live captioning, but I couldn't stop to turn it on myself and see how good it was.
      Alternatively, you can use Otter.ai to transcribe live. Whisper doesn't yet do it, but I expect the feature is coming.
      And it goes without saying that you always have to tell everyone in the meeting that you're doing it if it isn't something like Zoom's own where there is an automatic notification.

    An update just dropped v7.2 (715) and it includes identify speakers when multiple speakers are in the interview but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use it. And there's no HELP file or tutorial. I have the PRO version but this is killing me, I really wish I could identify multiple speakers for inclusion in the transcript. Any words for me about it?

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Год назад

      Hmm. I got excited there and raced to update -- I've just got 7.3 - and I can see a way to do it, a little. In Settings, Speakers, you can create "people". Then when a transcript is complete, you can click in the very top bar to switch from Transcript to Segments. Then in the left margin next to any segment, you can say who it is, you can pick from the names you created. But so far that's all I can see and it's not very satisfying, not very obviously useful. And it is obvious tedious as you click away all the time. Hmm.
