This is the best video I’ve seen on 3 turns - lots of technical detail! I’m struggling to perfect mine and this explains several things I’ve been doing wrong - thank you! 🙏
I wear hockey skates, and last week my skating coach taught me these. She wears figure skates. I thought she was mad as I didn’t think it was possible in hockey skates, but it was. It took me a lot of practice to get a rough FO 3 turn on each leg. Nice video, as usual of course. 🙂 Having started skating lessons 3 months ago I’m amazed at how much improvement I’ve made. I’d recommend anyone skating to get a good coach. IMO videos such as this are brilliant when used alongside a coach.
No worriers! The key is to strengthen your basic skating. So work on forward and backward, outside and inside edges and it will make a big difference!! For those videos, check out our Skating Essentials playlist.
The force to make the turn shouldn’t come from swinging yr shoulder but from swinging the hips (this should naturally come from bend-up position-hip turn- bend down). If the force come from yr shoulder, it’ll be very hard to control and hold the exit inside edges
When I do my 3 turns, my coach complains that I skate through my hips and should instead skate through the shoulders. Now I don't know which is right. :(
When I (Oleg) used to skate in PA, I was taught by a husband and wife coach team, and even then some things they taught varied between them :-) Learn what you are taught, and use what works best for you.
You should skate through your hips its easy than skating through your shoulder because it looks like your hands are flailing. And skating through your hips will make your 3 turns look good.
Hi Iomoon, yep! All of the corrections apply, except you want to do flatter entry and exit edges if you are going for a flip jump. What is especially important is the free hip and free shoulder checking. Also, don't go too flat, otherwise you will force the 3 turn and that will make it hard to keep it from curving.
I dont know what keeps happening to me lately. I used to have completely clean 3 turns no problem, then i got new skates/blades and now i cannot seem to stop "looping" my 3 turns. at the peak, i end up with a very small loop, about a 1-3 inch loop instead of a clean peak. i have no clue what i am doing differently than before or how on earth the loop keeps happening. it occurs even when i keep my free leg right next to my skating leg during the whole movement. its very odd to me
Hi! I’m just picking up ice skating after roller skating most my life. I’m in Chicago, is that where you guys are? Question for you: I’m noticing you are doing this on your left leg and I think I noticed your inside 3 turn was on your right leg. Is that how it’s done or should we be learning to do inside and outside 3 turns on each foot?
@@ailisr7278 NO. She means can she do a three turn the other direction on her RIGHT foot. yes she can. It just becomes a RFO three turn. Nothing to do with a bracket.

I love your detailed instruction on the entire body and foot position and where to apply weight on the blade. So helpful!
Loving the pressure gauge. Helps so much! Thank you!!!
Foot pressure gauge... HOLY COW THAT IS SMART !!

OK instant sub for the awesome explications with the amount of pressure to put, where etc etc that's perfect thank you
Thanks! I will be practicing this tonight at the rink 👍
one foot turns are so hard T-T
i always get scared and my free foot goes down in the middle of the turn

how is it now
this is so awesome!!
Thank you Catherine!!
what does it mean by "skate through the shoulders (or hips)" ?

Can this be done on hockey skates?

Do you have a tip to make this less Curvy? my coach complains that my entry into the flip jump is too curvy...

In these helpful videos I often hear you use the term "skate through your hips". Can you elaborate a bit, on what this means to you exactly?
Sure! Watch the second part (As Requested) of this video: ruclips.net/video/T1mw6TDAlq4/видео.html

Inside and outside edges on both feet

is it incorrect if i turn the other direction?
I believe that if you're turning the other direction -- out of the circle-- it becomes a bracket, rather than a 3 turn

this is NOT how you do an ice dance three turn. Maybe for a freeskater but definitely not for an ice dancer.
