How to fix Err on a Nikon camera 📷

- If your Nikon camera is blinking Err on its display, this video will tell you what might be happening & how to fix it.
If you are still having a problem make sure to isolate it to the camera or the lens by testing different lenses on the camera and different bodies on the lens.

I had the dreaded Err but it was for a different reason. I was using my D750 in Live View mode and the battery went flat while I wasn't looking. So when I changed the battery, the mirror was still in the up position giving the Err message. I put the drive mode dial into Mup position, pressed the shutter, the mirror came down and the error was fixed.
I will just say one thing: I love you man. This video was useless but your comment saved me from being shitscared that I broke the camera

This comment needs more upvotes!! What a bizarre source of the error. Was doing some night photography of fruit bats and briefly used Live View for focusing on the fruit tree with a flashlight. After the session was over, I turned off my camera. The next morning I noticed the flashing Err message and was devastated that cleaning the sensor didn't fix the problem. Thank you so much for this!

I followed your instruction to clean the contact and you really save my life, now my camera work nicely!
Another one I've encountered a few times with older AF lenses that have manual aperture controls. e.g. AF-D lenses - if the aperture isn't switched fully to the highest aperture number you get an FEE error message. Even if it looks like it's on the correct aperture, turning the aperture ring around a bit then putting it back onto the highest aperture will usually clear this one.

You saved the day Greg! I just finished a shoot and was headed out to an on location headshot shoot for 40 people. Err...grrrr and my 2nd 850 isn't tethering. Did your little trick and voila! Thanks man!
I have a D80 that i purchased since new back on 2005, never had any problems with it. Today has the err, I did what you suggested, and still have the same problem.

Just now I tried to switch on "Live View" on my d70 but it wouldn't work. I listened to your unbelievable solution and I'm damned if you weren't right. A quick wipe of the contacts on lens and camera with the tail of my t-shirt and voila! It now works. I couldn't believe it was so simple. Many thanks. (I'm still laughing.)
Err could come from many other reasons. This could be a faulty memory card, an autofocus module issue, or a shutter issue (most probably). In my case it's not a contact issue... Still investigating.
Mine is not a contact issue too. I suspect the other reasons though.
Just a quick note..I wiped the contacts on the body and lens, turned on the camera but not until I pressed the shutter button to take a picture did the "err" message disappear. Thanks for the tip.

In my case I solved the problem by pressing preview button and moving gently down with finger the stucked lamella responsible for apperture opening. It is positioned in the left side of the mount opening. Err appears every time I used more than 2 f stops. Hope it helps, good luck!
I had this issue with one of my D800s when it was about 6 months old. I tried wiping off the contacts like you said and another photographer in the group I was with tried it too. I still kept getting the ERRR message. Both the camera and lens was fairly new. I took it to a local camera repair shop that was authorized by Nikon and the guy looked at it, took it in the back and said it was definitely the camera as it did the same thing with the test lens he had. He sent it back to Nikon and I spent 2 months going back and forth with Nikon. They kept telling me that they couldn't reproduce the problem. It was very aggravating. They wanted me to send a lens which I didn't want to do. I think they finally did have a tech look at it but they claim they couldn't find anything wrong with my camera. I think they may have made some adjustments. I never had the issue again though I did have a memory card I was using start giving me problems so I stopped using that card recently. They suggested a memory card could cause it too but the ERRRR was where the F-stop would be showing. After reading some things others have said I am wondering if Nikon just didn't want to admit they produced a defective camera and fixed it without saying that they did? It really teed me off because the tech in the shop reproduced the problem but Nikon couldn't? It was without a lens at all but Nikon kept demanding that I send them a lens. I really felt like they gave me the run around on it though they paid for the shipping both ways. I just heard that Nikon tries to deny they have an issue with any of their cameras like they did on the D750.

Should you also use a soft dry cloth on the lens contacts inside your camera as well or just the contacts on the lens?

This error is frequent when the mirror locks up when using Live View mode. Occasionally it may stick especially if the battery dies in LV mode.
Easy to fix. Charge the battery. Remove the Lens, take out of LV mode, and press the shutter release. This should put the shutter back down.

this just happened to my d600. when I put my camera on a tripod then switch to live view. when I try to focus and take pictures, suddenly something goes wrong happening.
the indicator has the words "err" and the picture is not saved. when I try to replace with another lens the same thing happens.
the shutter sound is different. then I try to remove the lens and switch to manual mode, the mirror looks moving to the top but the shutter won't open.
the shutter blades look fine, no dents and so on. cannot enter live view and the camera cannot be used. does anyone know the solution?

Thanks Gregg. I had not used my camera in a while. Took a few pic for a photo shoot. Next couple of days error flashing. I cleaned the pins as you suggested. Even tried to loosen the mirror on both sides...Didn't work. Viewfinder is dark. Bottom line it stopped taking pictures altogether now. HELP!!!!

Congratulations for the video. Well I've a Nikon D7100 and I noticed that the lights indicator at the bottom of the viewfinder (inside the camera not in the display) are not lighting enough, too much weak and I prefer using that reading than take out the camera of my face to check in the display, what I mean, is there a possibility to increase the lights to get it better??

Thanks for this! I have two lenses with this lock. The nikon 28-70 has to be set at '2.8' to function while the 24-80 has to be at '22'. What I do NOT understand is the purpose of this switch.

Did not work on my D80 sadly. Tried different lenses to double check.
I removed the lens compleltely and the shutter still doesn’t fire on my D90 DSLR. Mode set to M (Manual) as well. Mirror is not stuck either. This test proves its not the lens/contacts. Err message still there. What could be the issue then?
Spot on for me...in my case, all I had to do was re-adjust the camera to the lens...I then heard a subtle "click" and bingo.
How do you re-adjust the camera to the lens?
@@johnleftwich650in my case I had not twisted or turned the lens to fit into the camera all the way until the end. It’s like when you close a jar or a bottle with a twisting cap and you leave it loose - I had to go all the way SOFTLY twisting the lens to the right until you hear an easy click.
For me the problem with 24-200 Nikkor Z Lens was solved when I turn camera on with the lens adjusted to maximum focal length - 200 мм. It was my second lens of this type. The first has defect of small plastic ring with Nikkor name at the front of the lens - the ring was not fixed correctly - it jumps out - I exchange them. The first lens also has initialization error - but it was gone by turn camera off and on as suggested.

My Nikon d700 had this problem for several days, instead of shutter spead blinking ERR came up and I couldn't do anything, just to put it in my bag and take another one. After a while I took it and it worked again, and it happened a couple of times. Now I cleaned those contacs with drye soft cloth and it's working..again. So, I do not know what happened, did this method worked or it JUST happened again :D I hope I do not face this problem tomorrow, then I will know this worked. Thank you!

@@lensprotogo hi. i have error that keeps saying press shutter release button again when i put my camera into quiet shutter mode it looks like after taking the pic the shutter doesnt come back down so it tells me to press the shutter release button again then the shutter comes back down...so basically i have to press it twice in order for the shutter to come back to its original position after taking the pic in quiet shutter mode....so the shutter gets stuck basically? how to fix this??

My entire LCD screen is lit up and I can’t clear it. Essentially every pixel is populated. Hmmm. I’m at a loss.
My d500 can only read my cfexpress card if NOT fully inserted -- if I fully insert it says err. if I leave the door open and the card not fully inserted it works?

Tried this with my D80 and it sorta worked at first. Still had the Err but it would take a pic about every 4 snaps. Didnt last long and back to not working at all. 😢
when I select Menu on my D100 and try to select the right arrow nothing is happening. I can't update any selections if the right arrow doesn't work. every other direction on the button works but the right. Thank you. Enjoyed your video.

I'm a Nikon user my D5300 function buttons are not working.
Just bought a Nikon F5. I can adjust the SHUTTER SPEED (with rear wheel) but the APERTURE reads "F --" (cannot adjust in mode; of course with front wheel knob). I have a 28mm 2.8 AIS so it should read atleast in Manual & Aperture priority. What gives?? Is the camera just messed up?? Or am i missing something?? Bought it off Amazon
I have an Nikon F100 and I was taking pictures today but when I try and take a photo it says error.
It is on F22 and I tried two different lenses and the same thing happens. When I press on the depth of field control preview button, it does not work. Any idea what it is?

I get the triangle F error, have cleaned the pins and contacts. It goes away if I twist the lens and body of the camera slightly but comes back intermittently. Seems like something isn't tight enough or something is warn.

I didn't see my particular problem, which was with the lens. It gives an ERR on both my camera bodies (D850 and Z7). Other lenses work fine. I did try cleaning, but that did not fix. Any thoughts or do I need to send it in somewhere (a problem for me as I live in Panama -- the country).

well my problem is a little more screwed up than this.. so I was just casually taking photos and suddenly the mirror made the flapping sound but it didn't come down anymore it sounded like long exposure...... now my mirror is stuck in the up position and whenever I now press the shutter button the camera just makes a tiny klick and nothing happens. so now I take the lens off and look down as I hit the shutter button (yes I'm in full manual mode) and not even the shutter is moving so I have a stuck mirror AND a stuck shutter..... maybe the shutter is the reason my mirror doesn't move down but its really frustrating as I don't have warranty on the camera anymore and also I don't really have money for repairs as I'm only 16 yrs old...
anyway, I am pretty confident with opening electronics my self for repair as I've done things like phones tablets and pc repairs for me and for some friends too so if anyone can point me in the right direction or has any idea about whats going on please let me know I would greatly appreciate that!
(also don't worry about me breaking the camera or me getting shocked by the piece of shit flash capacitor because I honestly don't really care as I've been shocked by high voltage ac and dc a lot already XD)

Nikon also blinks "Err" when you are using D lens (older versions) if the aperture ring is not fully closed and locked in place.

We should also clean the contacts on the camera body.
good start, BUT you forgot the case of old AFD or AF glass ( for film nikon's)- attaching one of theese also gives this 'ERR' ; easy fix, just use the camera menue and select your old lenses' focal length and max F_stop under the heading of NON CPU lens data .
(read up in your cameras manual to find this setting, ALSO TRY shoot without lens, in menue's as well.

@@ajkrivutza1438 no worries; the issue is, the camera in P\S\A modes needs data from the lens contacts OR the fixed data points from this {Non-CPU lens data} menu to do an exposure calculation, the mode P flashes as well, as a warning of this(aka No data from lens); this ALSO occurs in an iris ring lens, if not set at minimum aperture {F16/22} giving the body full access to the iris range (if you set iris to "use dials" in aperture, controls menu). this is a quirk of these cameras, not an issue nowadays with the Z system and its native mount lenses; just the dslr's and the 3/4 sets of those F-mount lenses, if not "G" you need to specify how you want to work, otherwise you get these error messages.
