    Wow thanks very informative.
My 2003 55 AMG now on 37k miles and none of those issues have happened to mine......yet but I'm aware of all the possible issues !
However it is garaged and molicoddled !😊
It's amazing how folk ruin the interiors but some of that's down to missuse and leaving them in the sun etc.
My Father always parked his cars in the shade and it rubbed off on me, as it protects the paintwork, headlamps, rubber trim and interior etc.
I've changed the ABC fluid and fitted the upgraded filter to the reservoir.
I've bought the upgraded roof flap brackets ready to fit. Mine have sagged a couple of mm.
I've bought some valve block seal kits ready just incase.
Great cars to drive and judging by modern cars of today which are so ugly, they are no more unreliable.
So many emission strangling devices to go wrong now, you won't catch me in a car younger than 15 years old 😊

Very well done video. I keep my R230 garaged, and with over 110,000 miles on it, I haven't had any of the interior components fall apart like on your example. I have had to rebuild most of the ABC system, including all four shocks, accumulators, and more. That rebuild was over 5 years ago, and I've heavily tracked the car during those 5 years. The system is still functioning great with no errors or issues to date. I replaced the front lock cylinder for the top because that was leaking at one point. I've also done MANY other jobs on this car including the windshield washer pump, pneumatic pump, vario top issues, control arm bushings, alternator, window switches, and more. These cars are fabulous when they are working, but they are very high maintenance machines.

Very informative video. My friend just bought a 2007 SL55 and the suspension is in need of costly repairs. He went from a R129 to R230 and I know he regrets the move. I'll be moving from my R129 SL500 to a R231 SL550 w/o ABC soon. That newer model has waaaay less issues. Thanks again for the video.

I have a beautiful 2005 SL 500 and love it. The only problems I have had was replacing the front grill which I hated because it looked like a Mimi blind mistake, with a single chrome version on black Matt. I also replaced the outdated “command center” with a top,of the line Kenwood stereo system, Garmin GPS with Apple everything. I’ve maintained the car and it is awesome. Just went on a road trip from San Francisco to visit friends in Marina Del Ray and got 35 miles to the gallon. Smooth, totally wonderful and I might add, stunning looking car. It just takes maintenance like any other car. Not a cheap car or ride but in my opinion my Mr. Sly is worth the investment.

@@modified504 I haven’t deleted my suspension I think I’m just going to invest in keeping it top top. Proactively replacing the damper and accumulators, doing a regular flush, potentially replacing the pump at some stage. That should keep it going for a long time without issues. I think deleting the suspension is what I would do only if there was a massive ABC failure. Even then you have to then add anti-roll bars to get close to what ABC offers. Depends on the specific car what state it is in imo

I’ve owned an R230 SL500 since 2007…. It is a pain in the @rse at times, but man I love it.
I almost swapped it in for a Lambo in 2013…. Thankfully I was talked out of it…. Lambos are 10 a penny these days where I live & look ridiculous.
I actually have people taking photos of the R230, as the body style has aged so well & now a rare car to see on the road…. Why ? … because they are a pain in the @rse & people don’t want that to be fair !! 😂
I keep mine covered & on a trickle charge (essential)….. I have a Mercedes trained mechanic who is a wizard with all the important stuff… but many many fixes are now very easy to do yourself.
It is in as new shape, interior & body-wise, a few comments on the cars on your vid are spot on, very poor maintenance = a sh1tbox !
Set aside a few grand a year & your golden.
I’ve driven every car out there, nothing compares to the R230 for overall “smile on your face driving” imo.
SL’s historically go up in value, so it’s a no brainer if you want a timeless beauty for peanuts to buy …. & can stomach the odd large hit curveball !

In UK these are fantastic SL models and one of the best looking. Well maintained they are no problems, badly maintained they can be expensive, however, these were quality cars when new, so you are still having to maintain quality and an expensive car. If you can’t afford then don’t buy. Willing to maintain to a high standard they are brilliant and quality to drive and cruise around the world. Some of those you showed are amongst the worst I’ve seen in a long time, but then in the UK we may appreciate quality more than some other countries.

Did own SL500 (2004) without problems for about 8 years of ownership and at the same time SL 55 AMG for a short period equally without problems soon this car got replaced by the SL 65 AMG that once had an ABC problem and on the paddles for the hard-top but otherwise doing fine. Currently there is a minor oil dripping problem from the automatic transmission, it seems that there is a leak where a cable leads into. I wouldn't say that my SL experience is a money pit over the years but given this video I somewhat fear that it could become one down the road as I drive my SL 65 AMG now for about 16 years but has only about 70k km on the odometer. I will look for an Mercedes-Benz R230 specialist (older mechanic) to do a complete check (fluids other than motor oil) as I haven't serviced it based on the MB booklet for many years due to the low milage and the cost it would have involved but take note that it got inspected and serviced by a non Mercedes shop regularly and the car is in excellent condition as it never stood in the sun except when driving everything looks like brand new. Moreover I did a complete paint job 2 years ago. It's a stunning beauty to watch and a very muscular car to drive. I'm still loving it!

But the after market warranty did. The hydraulic fluid system has never been changed. MBZ said there is no schedule for ABC fluid flush. Then the main control value went out, warranty fixed it, then an accumulator valve went out. My mechanics opinion is the failure to flush the fluid has compromised all the components. Hope fully now after being flush three times the failures will stop. So in two years of ownership, this would have cost me more than $10,000.

    I have owned a 280SL Pagoda, a 500SL R107, several R129s from 280 up to 500…..and now an R230.
And, as a DRIVING MACHINE, it is BY FAR the best. The others don’t even come close!
Starting in the UK, I have driven it all over western Europe, more than once, all the way from Sweden to southern Spain.
The annoying and tiring scuttle shake which afflicts all previous SLs (yes, even R129s have it slightly especially without the hard top on) is totally absent in the R230. Just this alone already makes them a much more refined long-distance car.

I think it’s pretty much the same as any premium car (or let’s say it’s more important in a premium & complex car), if you save money on the purchase you will get a bitter bill later. Better spend a bit more on a meticulously maintained example than buy a “deal” and go bankrupt, wasting all the fun along the way.

R230’s are only difficult to maintain if you take them to a dealer, most of whom don’t know how to repair, all they do is replace.

In the early 2000s Mercedes produced a fantastically terrible cupholders. Idk what they thought about such "transformers" back in early 2000s when they made them. Super uncomfortable especially by today's standards. Even in my 2006 CLS cupholders are slightly better but still not perfect. In today's cupholders are fine, but those early ones were and are a joke. My W140 doesn't have front cupholders (besides the one pseudo-cupholder in the glove box) and idk which is worse: to have such early 2000s cupholders or not to have any. That 2003 SL definitely seen better days. Maybe spent too much time in the street instead of being garaged. At some point owners simply ignored its issues but they obviously tinted the windows! 🤣And the amount of those issues only continued to grow. Please tell me where to get those updated parts for the folding roof and where to buy are top rebuild kit? PS: I always thought ABC stands for "Replace it with coilovers ASAP!" 😁

That's a bunch of bullshit on these coilovers I assume that each coilover works the same. Unless you drive in Grandpa's mode. I have a coilover coilovers you spend 1668, then you don't have to worry about the AbC. The ride is just as comfortable. These cars must be driven

I own two SL- mine are always garaged . All these cars since 2000 are mostly plastic. The useful life on any plastic in the weather is 10 years. Then it gets brittle and breaks. Get a garage and a good car cover and stop complaining about stuff you can avoid .

    Buenas,
