I stopped using my TND 80 Tablet for about 2yrs, due to that "Charging Issue".....I saw this video and got another idea and it worked, I just went to the gas station and got a regular car lighter plug that was 2.4 - 3.0A for higher output and BAM...…….$7.99 fixed the charge issue (O.o) LOL.....it was your fix that gave me the idea, thank you....I can now be in love with my badass TND 80 Tablet once again :)
brother. your vid was an anser i needed. HOWEVER. the actually charging port thata SUPPOSED to be used is the magnetic base with the dc charger NOT the usb charger...also for those that want to know. rand has redesigned the base and will SHIP you the current one for FREE!
Mike goble the magnetic mount was worse when it came to charging. It would drain twice as fast. Anyway this is now in the trash. I got so frustrated with this pile o junk.
no offense. you vid was made 2 years ago. the base charging system has been re worked.. rapid charges up and holds 100% rand will send out to those tgat have a unit still under warranty for free.. just a heads up
Omg thank you so freaking much I bought my randmcnally a year ago the Pro 8 , and mine instantly cuts off while driving and it makes me so angry !!! Like whyyyy but now I know why !! Thanks soooo much purchasing a road king charger tomorrow .
It definitely worked my gps never cuts off now , thank you soooo much !! I definitely thought I bought a bad one for six hundred and something dollars , u saved me !
There is more to the issue of charging then just the charger. I had purchased one of them and it still didn't fix the issue I had. Sent it out to get repaired in Kentucky and Rand's facility. Just got it back today at 1145 so 30 minutes ago, find out tomorrow if it works or not. Switching to Garmin truck GPS's next, Know several people who have one and they love it.
I was just about to kick myself in the ass for buying this today, having just noticed it wouldn't take a charge but I quickly went to u tube and found this video. u saved the day. your a hero and a scholar. it was hard enough to explain to the wife that I spent that much on a gps but them to find out it was screwed up in less then one month. I was freaking out! anyway thank you for the advice. going in to get that charger right now. thank u.
If your wife knew the cost of topping on a trailer on a low underpass, she wouldn’t give you shit. #2 ...never let her scare you. I guarantee she needs you more than you need her.
First and last Randmacrappy I ever bought. Mine is actually the 8 pro(tablet) and it also dies. I wish I could use your advice but randmacrappy changed the charging port to a “pin” charger. Garmin has just earned a new customer fo next one!
parked at loves now with my gps down I have the 730 says charging turns on and turns right off bull crap. Guess I'm getting the road king. Hope they have a different connection for it Thanks man for sharing
Hey Rob I don’t have the tablet yet, but I do have the 540 and experiencing the same charging problems. I plan on buying the Road King Charger today. I’ll update you on whether this works for the 540.
Good video driver I’ll see about buying that pro charger cause I’m getting frustrated with my God tablet cutting out especially when I’m just miles from my shipping and receiving warehouse thanks
I have the small TND 530 and it was dying as soon as you enter in a new route. I reseted it and deleted the Address history and bam it’s working now. The power light flickers, the power chord I use belongs to my microphone. You shud have connected it to da batteries huzzza
WOW I actually thought you had a fix for the problem. You see you mite have a different setup than my TND T70 but the actual magnetic mount that came with mine is also a gps booster .If I have mine with the cable going through the gps booster magnetic mount the dam thing dies like its not even on a charger. So I have to hook it up through the port on the right side of the gps itself and the funny thing is on rand McNally's own website it says not to use that port to charge the gps. Well they don't leave you much of a choice since it does not charge through the magnetic gps booster mount. Also I the beginning of my message to you I was not being shitty but after searching high and low I thought you had a fix for that dam magnetic gps booster mount. Thanks for the info though.
Hey Rob, we have the OverDrive 8 Pro with the same charging issues. If I buy that replacement charger does it plug into the base/mount like the original charger?
The Rand McNally chargers come apart at the plug in. I had this problem for years with other McNally GPS. I now have Tablet no charging problems but the charger come apart when pulling out of plug. I been lucky in finding the parts, fuse etc. will buy the Roadmaster charger now I know. Also the window mount just broke fell off of window, need new window mount.
Rand McNally TND tablet 80, Rand McNally TND 750, Rand McNally TND 740 & 730. You need to update the right driver for the right device. And if you don’t update it, you will face some issues that are difficult to solve. The issues are like: Rand Mcnally GPS does not turn on Rand mcnally truck gps not responding The device is frozen Rand McNally GPS keeps shutting off You will have to reset the device to resolve such issues. Like outdoor hiking GPS, and military GPS wristwatch, you need to follow some guidelines. To reset the device, there are some steps you need to follow. But, there are times when you can’t find it. You come across this feature when you are looking for maps, destinations, or any other settings after you turn on the device for the first time. The red truck screen sits on for some time and a message pops up saying “Truck GPS is not responding. Nice, lol. I actually had both problems with the new big tnd , falling bcuz to heavy, dying,. So I bought the smaller one. Worked well for a while, doesn't fall off window but now can't hold charge and sometimes can't get enough juice to power on. Am frustrated and im about to buy that charger, thank you. Garmin's would have been my last resort, but as an owner operator, rand mcnally's invaluable by showing estimated toll costs. Garmin doesn't.
When I was out with trainer he bought 3 chargers in a month also when you turn off truck and start it back up you had to check address to make sure it was the same location you entered but overall I would have been lost without
the road king charger you have only puts out 1 amp(through the mini port). its 3.4 total including the usb port. i went to flying J and bought the ToughTested Pro+ charger (2.1amp) and it also fixed the problem. 1 amp does not charge it fast enough. so, its not the amps that's the issue, its the pos charger itself.
If it's not holding the charge, it's possible that the internal battery pack has weakened out, try a replacement. I just had a customer with a "charging problem" and after soldering in a new battery pack it has solved the issue.
I'm a drive away tow away driver. I am constantly driving units that are over weight. could you post a video on how I may be able to make my route permit specific? or show me how to change my route so I can make my route identical to my permits?
Rudy Angel I have a similar issue with oversize the only way I know of is to go to Rands website and create the route there each and every time (works fine for a dedicated route), but I just keep my permits handy and let the all knowing gps recalculate every time I have to go a different way than it says
problem is, rand mcnally won't fix any problems as long as people keep spending money on their products. the 720 kept freezing up. I thought an ad card would fix it, didn't. anyway, rand mcnally never addressed the issue. if Garmin had better mapping it would be all I owned.
Rob do you have a model number for that roadking charger can't get my tablet to power up I'm going to have my wife order me the roadking charger thanks great video very helpful
I did the same thing you did call Rand mcnally they sent me a new charging Block that only lasted A-day or 2 then I had the bright idea of keeping it plugged in and running a cord to the tablet Port on the side that has works great I did not even have to buy an extra cord had one for my Motorola phone that worked But I do have a badd problem with mine that when you hit a hard bop it shuts the unit off I have the loves extended warranty on this and will be sending the unit back when I have enough money to buy a Different brand
Tilton Brewer I have never been sent out of route. you have to have the preferences set up or it will do stupid stuff... but it can also work in your favor. I'll make a video of it soon.
hi bro thanks for sharing I hve my gps problem. when I turnoff my truck and all electric switch, my gps go off suddenly. can not get start anmore. so what should I do?
Hello Rob, Thanks a lot for providing all this valuable information. I noticed below you stated: "also, I tossed my tablet. eventually it took a shit. but it took a while for that to happen." I want to get a Rand McNally Truck GPS for my dad. Which gps is the best on the market right now? Would you recommend the "IntelliRoute TND 730 LM"? Does this GPS have a camera? I'm interested in getting a GPS with a camera if possible. Looking forward to your response, -A
Amal And I have the 730 and it is compatible with the camera but it does not have one in it. it is an external camera connected by a cord. I love the 730.
Rob, we discussed the issue I ended up having with the tnd80 after figuring out the charging issue, with it stuck on the loading screen. Rather than chunk it, i held on to it. Still stuck on loading but i was discussing another issue with the 540 with tech support. Of course they said they can fix it for a price but i think the tech flubbed when i mentioned my tnd80. He said they would flash it and it would fix the problem. Do you or anyone here reading these comments know how to flash one? It can't be no different than flashing a phone i would think.
I would assume it would be like reinstalling the software. Have you tried updating it on your laptop, maybe a driver has failed but the update may replace that driver.
@@RobRealistic I have tried the laptop but it doesn't see the device like an extra drive, it will only charge. I looked at other tech forums and one guy managed to get into the tablet's root menu, but couldn't get it to respond. There is a way to do it, apparently RM can do it with ease but if the owner isn't careful, you will brick it. That being said, it is out of warranty, RM could just tell me how to do it instead of wanting to charge me, if I screw it up, it's on me.
If it were me, it seems as if you have nothing to loose by having them tell you how to do it. Your going to spend money anyway and honestly the price they charge to fix their crap is outrageous. So worst case scenario you mess it up and have to buy another gps. Best case is it works and you saved money.
Mine has worked for a year now it wont even charge and i have it on a 5amp charger plugged into the inverter still not turning on not to mention it doesn’t know where its at half the time
@@RobRealistic yeah I think it's just a 500 dollar paperweight now. RM would be more than willing to fix it for 100 or so and if you add in the first 100 I spent getting the screen fixed it would be a 700 dollar paperweight. Fancy I would be like those rich folks who light their cigars with 100 dollar bills and wipe their asses with 20's
@@RobRealistic update on my tnd80. They issued an rma for the 540. I told the tech that because the tnd80 was out of warranty why not walk me through flashing it. If I made it worse, no biggie, my fault. They refused stating "it's proprietary information" regarding flashing. I told them I have flashed various devices in the past with no issues and I wasn't about to pay another 100$ for someone to plug an sd card into it. I was shocked when the tech issued an RMA to replace it no charge. I thought sweet I get the tablet back and have a backup with the 540. The tnd80 arrived and while it didn't stick on the loading screen, it was exponentially worse. Would show the map spinning 360 degrees around the truck, either no registered speed or I was running triple digits. I contacted them since they said this one was warrantied for a year. They told me(and I actually saved the messages) that they knew there this issue affecting the tnd80 and only the tnd80 and it was after their last update. No fix was in the works and they were so sorry. So, I contacted loves (I use them for fueling) and shared the messages from rand. Basically told them that they should reconsider selling this particular GPS because of the problems. They replied back that they would forward it up to their sales management team. Hit em where it hurts.
@@briggsjos mine would give an estimated cost of tolls. For some reason if I was running the KTA it would never show a toll on the route. An update came out and suddenly the estimated toll cost was gone. It will tell me 5 miles out from a booth but no more estimates. I spoke with a rep and was told the devs took it out in that update. However they were going to put it back in because of folks complaining.
I have a memory problem with my tablet I am running out of memory would putting a memory card help or do nothing and if it will help what size memory card do I need to put in there
I been hearing a lot about how bad this tablet is. How is yours so far ? Do you have the 70 or 80 ? Is it possible the owners are not setting it up properly ? Would like some feed back from you and anyone else reading this. Thank you.
William Crivello I had to buy the tnd 720 about a month after I made this video. the tablet ABSOLUTELY sucks. I definitely do not recommend getting it.
hey one more question. the roadking was a great idea you saved that gps from getting thrown out the window. i have the short cord and cant find the long one anywhere. where did you get yours? loves suck they only have the shorties. thanks great vid by the way
RobRealistic I don't know what the hell is up with mine. If I plug directly into the tablet I have no issues. But I plug into the charging dock the fucker don't stay charged.
looks like rand mcnally have some serious issues going on, cause I have the tnd 730 and the first one didn't last thru the first day, I returned that one got my second one, lasted until today so about 5 months and now this charging issue I'm having is driving me and my truck insane.
I've had it for 4 years, total garbage, been nothing but trouble, in nite mode durring the day, cant see it, then day mode at nite....but I've got a list of issues...
You could always just figure it out your damn self instead of looking to RUclips for answers... and it was made about a GPS that's not made anymore. So if your looking for this information now, go buy a garmin. SMH.
Rob, when you contacted RM, did they give you the same line they gave me? "Do not charge through side of unit, use the slice" now what gets me is they couldn't give me a straight answer as to why not to use it. They tried to start off by saying you use it to update. I was quick to remind them that their tech support told me you can't update via usb, only wifi. Mine started recently doing this and they want another 100 or so to fix the problem. I say another 100 because I had to already send it in for the screen because of the base. It's almost like their r&d department thinks all the roads out in the world are so smooth. Anyway, does it have to be that particular charger? If I found a 3.4 amp at Wally world, shouldn't that do the trick? I don't watch videos I have a galaxy tab e with unlimited data from carrier and directv now.
I never had any issue charging via slice or tablet but then it started doing this. But they keep saying don't use the tablet to charge. Honestly, when the one rep tried to say the port on the side of the tablet was for updating and I corrected him (he sounded bumfuzzled) I should have known. I will definitely try the different charger. It's almost like they know their product is going to break down and they encourage you to buy another more expensive one.
Confirmed it I believe. I am in on home time this weekend so I brought it home. Plugged in the home charger, charged right up within minutes. Unplugged and started fiddling with it. Battery started draining. Plugged it back in and boom no issues started fast charging and within 5 minutes had almost 100% again.
Rob, I was able to pick one up at a loves. Not exactly the sane one you have but save brand. Mine has the coiled cord. Maybe 6 ft if I stretched it out but since it stays in one place, works for me like a charm.
I did I bought one for a call com tablet the pig tail connector was bit wider. Luckily there was two of the correct plug road kings left I got it on the tablet and I get a solid battery meter all day. Thanks I hope this last good while
I have two off the worthless TND 70's, won't stay charged! Then when you call India or Pakistan to ask about it you can't understand them! Obviously they don't either, I ordered two new charger cables and they sent me two headsets! I reordered the following week and they sent me the wrong cord!! Junk!!
thank you for helping me with this problem now i can finally go back to commiting TND
Thanks you. Now TND can go on

the road king charger you have only puts out 1 amp(through the mini port). its 3.4 total including the usb port. i went to flying J and bought the ToughTested Pro+ charger (2.1amp) and it also fixed the problem. 1 amp does not charge it fast enough. so, its not the amps that's the issue, its the pos charger itself.
LEDF00T what can of changer you get
Charger Still working good, iron bro?
If it's not holding the charge, it's possible that the internal battery pack has weakened out, try a replacement.
I just had a customer with a "charging problem" and after soldering in a new battery pack it has solved the issue.
What is that mount that you mounted the Max mount on? Been looking for it
So where do you get those disc sticky thing because I can only find like small 2" ones
Petro or TA. The big ones. Not the shitty small ones... ie Walcott, Joplin, deming
How much does this repair cost. And shipping.
Throw it in the garage and buy a basic free download map GPS. You dont need all the fancy stuff
Thank you so much I’m bout to go over to the loves and buy that charger
While your there buy another GPS. This is a temporary fix. This took a shit maybe 3 months after this video.
Thanks a lot it really helps, I have the same tablet and I have the same charger
thanks 4 the info rob helps
problem is, rand mcnally won't fix any problems as long as people keep spending money on their products.
the 720 kept freezing up.
I dont. This video is 3 years old.
@@RobRealistic cool beans at least I know where to start thanks for getting back to me so quickly
You saved my life bro thanks
Thank you sir. This really helped me.
Yeah I did call rand and they gave me the new block and charger but that was only a temporary fix. When it happened again, It was out of warranty.
How is the tnd tablet , been hearing the rand mcnally gps send you out of route sometimes and the Garmin 770.
Tilton Brewer I have never been sent out of route. you have to have the preferences set up or it will do stupid stuff... but it can also work in your favor. I'll make a video of it soon.
fantastic news keep up the good work..
My compass on my TND tablet puts me off track most times. Any idea how that can be fixed?
There is a setting that you can take off, always face north, or always face up. Try that.
@@RobRealistic that's the setting I have it on. Facing north
@@olaadebayo1846 turn it off
hi bro thanks for sharing
I hve my gps problem. when I turnoff my truck and all electric switch, my gps go off suddenly. can not get start anmore. so what should I do?
Amos Chhakchhuak not sure. wish I could help.
help me please?
Hello Rob,
Thanks a lot for providing all this valuable information.
Looking forward to your response,
-A
Amal And I have the 730 and it is compatible with the camera but it does not have one in it. it is an external camera connected by a cord. I love the 730.
Thanks a lot Rob!
@@RobRealistic agreed
Mine has worked for a year now it wont even charge and i have it on a 5amp charger plugged into the inverter still not turning on not to mention it doesn’t know where its at half the time
should i try the other charger first
puff10231 it work for a bit but I would exchange it when you have the chance. if not, your stuck with it.
will the charger work on the 7:20 Rand McNally
Walter Jones no it wont
what service on your phone do you have? when i drive thru mountains sprint cuts put for hours
At the time I had Tmobile. Now I have at&t
I have Verison and I hardly ever lose service.
Good info brother
Mine changes routes out of no where and goes way out of the way.
I really need help with this. What gps do you recomend? Thanks!!
I have a tnd 720. Big screen and updates are free for life.
Right. I was about to buy the one u had on the video but then i read one of your comments and u said it was done 😂 but ok ill look into it. Thanks!
@@richardogarcia5044 yeah the worst purchase I ever made was that tablet
Tnx bro i was angery about this issue
Rob, have you experienced the tablet not loading? Mine just goes to the compass loading image. Resetting will do nothing.
Yes. You have to hit the reset button with a small pin
@@RobRealistic yeah I did that. Over and over and over. It just sits on the loading screen
@@jjfunk73110 throw it in the trash. That fixed my problem
Also does the 720 tells you how much tolls cost? I kno the tnd does?
CryptoTrucker my 540 does, so I'm sure they would too. It's been a feature in the Rand McNally GPS for quite a few years to the least now.
I have a memory problem with my tablet I am running out of memory would putting a memory card help or do nothing and if it will help what size memory card do I need to put in there
what size memory card in what class should I use?
I been hearing a lot about how bad this tablet is. How is yours so far ? Do you have the 70 or 80 ? Is it possible the owners are not setting it up properly ? Would like some feed back from you and anyone else reading this. Thank you.
William Crivello I had to buy the tnd 720 about a month after I made this video. the tablet ABSOLUTELY sucks. I definitely do not recommend getting it.
OK. Thank you for getting back to me so soon.
William Crivello no problem.
I'm on number 2 got the 2nd one from rand McNally after 3 months same issue I can chargers sometimes it works sometimes it don't pain in the axx
I bought the Garmin 570. Works great. No issues.
I suspect this is my issue with my Overdryve 7 Pro. I'll find out later today
Do u need wifi for gps to work
No, the GPS receiver is built in like it is in virtually all smartphones as well.
hey one more question. the roadking was a great idea you saved that gps from getting thrown out the window. i have the short cord and cant find the long one anywhere. where did you get yours? loves suck they only have the shorties. thanks great vid by the way
Pilot
Are you charging off the dock or the tablet side?
jacob bourg both. Neither worked unless it was with this charger
RobRealistic I don't know what the hell is up with mine. If I plug directly into the tablet I have no issues. But I plug into the charging dock the fucker don't stay charged.
Same issue
looks like rand mcnally have some serious issues going on, cause I have the tnd 730 and the first one didn't last thru the first day, I returned that one got my second one, lasted until today so about 5 months and now this charging issue I'm having is driving me and my truck insane.
will the road king work for a T70 Rand Mcnally???
Great video... saved me
Ram Mounts are great for a large GPS
I've had it for 4 years, total garbage, been nothing but trouble, in nite mode durring the day, cant see it, then day mode at nite....but I've got a list of issues...
So much talkative... You could explain it within 1 minute.
You could always just figure it out your damn self instead of looking to RUclips for answers... and it was made about a GPS that's not made anymore. So if your looking for this information now, go buy a garmin. SMH.
@@RobRealistic I didn't mean to offend you. It's just a healthy criticism. Thank you anyway.
It didn't matter where I charged it from. It didn't work. But I got the best charge when I charged it through the tablet and not the slice.
Maybe 6 ft if I stretched it out but since it stays in one place, works for me like a charm.
just had that problem lol note 3 charger love it
I bought the charger but it didn’t fit to my gps tablet cause the plug in pig tail was to big
Never had that issue. Maybe you grabbed the wrong one? 🤷♂️
I did I bought one for a call com tablet the pig tail connector was bit wider. Luckily there was two of the correct plug road kings left I got it on the tablet and I get a solid battery meter all day.
Thanks I hope this last good while
@@enrique2ortiz1 it should, and when it fails again, toss that piece of shit out of the window and buy a basic tnd760
The cables are too thin to provide enough milliamps to charge it.
This tablet is a piece of junk. We pay a lot for it. Should come with a proper charger. Buy Garmin, screw RandMcCrappy
I have two off the worthless TND 70's, won't stay charged! Then when you call India or Pakistan to ask about it you can't understand them! You have to lick the suction cup to get it to stick.
walmart 3.4 amp micro usb. 8.95, 3.4 amp is the output from your charger

Meh. It worked.
