  • I just returned from the 16 week 19D(Cavalry Scout)OSUT training at Fort Benning, GA. so I wanted to talk about how it was and tell you what to expect. I didn't tell you about everything so If you have any questions ask me in the comments, i'm no Army expert or anything, and still very new to the Military world but i'll try my best to help you out.

    Thank you sir for sharing. My son shipped out for Ft. Benning as a 19D yesterday, and I'm guessing there's about a 80-90% chance he ran across your video. I'm sure he'd find your advice very helpful.
    I want to thank you personally, too, because now that he's gone I'm struggling a bit with "separation anxiety" (hey, I love my son, what can I say!). Watching your video helped me feel still "connected", instead of just wondering "I wonder what Jeremy's doing today?" I've actually got a rough idea of at least what he might be doing.
    Thank you, sir. Thank you for the video, thank you for your service.

    We got busted in Gold Phase at Ft. Knox, KY. Our Platoon's House Mouse decided to buy us all Snickers Bars during his bleach run to the PX. We ate them just before a 5K run for morning PT. We were begging our Drill Sergeant to run "5 more miles" as we were hyped up on our sugar rush. He obliged but nearly had a heart attack. We had an inspection, later that day. The Command Sergeant Major found a few Snickers wrappers. He then made us all drink a ton of chocolate milk and do a 10k run. I've never seen so many troops puke and fall out on a run. It was the stuff of nightmares. lol

    Basic was a blast. We had a cp go to mop phase and stick phase. I want to go back again. It's not as bad as it sounds. Just take it one step at a time. Trust me. I've been in for 5 years. When I went to meds is when I made my choice to go active duty. Never regretted my choice. It's the best choice I've made.

    Went OSUT -Basic & AIT in Ft Knox Kentucky back in 1990. The 1st Gulf War was ramping up. l was an eager young buck looking for adventure. Being a 19D was loads of fun. Had duty assignments in Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America. Retired after 20 years. It was a time l cherish. For those joining now. Make the most of it & take care of your physical/mental health while your serving. Blessings to you all.

    I went through basic at knox in 09 as 19D, I thought it was horrible at the time but looking back it was one of the best times i ever had. If you take it serious and put in a lot of hard work you will defiantly come out of it a better person. To all you new recruits you are missing out by going to Benning, and not being able to experience HEARTBREAK, MISERY, AND AGONY. Good Luck, If you aint Cav......

    My son just left us on April 23rd to go to Fort Benning for basic training. He’s doing the 19D thing. He’s currently in which you all call “reception”. Basic training starts on May 2nd. My question is when should my wife and I hear from him and will it be by mail or phone? Will it be during the red phase or white phase or later than that? Thanks for sharing and giving me an overview and what he should expect. Appreciate it. 😎👍🏾

      He will get a very short phone call when he arrives at basic. We got a quick phone call at the beginning of every phase if we were lucky, but every troop does it differently. Same with the letters, it just depends if he'll have time to write or not.

    I'm not in the best of shape, but I definitely plan on changing that before I enlist. I'm most definitely going for 19D, any way to assure I get 19D? Also, what aspect of the body should I focus on, just Cardio, Pushups/Sittups? anything else? Please and thanks. Also, I've researched 19D, but I still really don't understand what its all about, sure I learned some stuff that they do, but I'd like to know EVERYTHING possible, on what exactly a cav scout does, Example like Patrols?

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  9 лет назад +2

      Just run, push-ups/situps and you'll be fine. About getting the 19D for sure, when you go to MEPS if they don't have a slot available then don't enlist at that time, and just return when there is one available. The Scout is the eyes and ears for the Commander on the battlefield, so your primary goal will be to perform reconnaissance on the enemy and collect vital information. A scouts best weapon is his radio, but at the same 19D is a combat mos, so the mission can always change.

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  10 лет назад +6

      Not directly, no.. but I do believe that military service in general will provide you with skills you can use in the civilian world.

    • @TheTyrsson20
      @TheTyrsson20 9 лет назад +7

      I highly recommend that you try to get as many schools and certifications under your belt as possible while you are in. Problem is, that while your Military service, may look good on your resume, most civilian companies only care about specialized skills which you can bring to their firm. Being able to raid Iraqi villages in the dead of night or scouting out an enemy position, just isnt all that sought after in the civilian world. Being a combat soldier, your best bet is to go for ranger school or SF, or just becoming the best at what you do, with multiple combat tours. That way you may have a chance at the private military market when you get out. Being a "simple" scout that did his time in... Is a dead end once you ETS.

    • @TheTyrsson20
      @TheTyrsson20 9 лет назад +4

      TheTyrsson20 Also definitly try going to college while you are in, will help out a great bit in time saving if you decide to use your 9/11 bill once you are out. If you are ever lucky enough to deploy to a FOB which has a BETSS-C System for surveillance, talk to your COC in volunteering to get a position with them, if only for the training. The cert. you get from there can help you land a job as a contractor, as well as give you chances for networking with civilians.

      Depends on the circumstances. We had guys fail for PT tests, another way is not completing certain events that was planned for the day. If they didn't complete that event say a ruckmarch or something like that, you were recycled and sent to another training troop. If you failed that same event again or you failed another PT test, you were booted

I do pretty good with math and i thought i knew a good amount about mechanical stuff cause I've been working on cars for like the past 5 years but i took an asvab practice test and i did what i would consider as bad like i missed like 50% of the question on the auto and shop and the mechanical comprehension. Should i be worried?

      If your worried about the ASVAB just study and prepare, there are practice tests online and workbooks that can also help you. As far as advice goes, I don't really know what to say lol, i'm still very new to the scout world.. I guess just be ready to push your limits and when things get shitty, just embrace it.

    I'm headed to Benning next month for 19D OSUT. I have sort of an idea after watching some videos what to expect. My question is do they really ask for volunteers for Airborne if slots are available? I couldn't get it in my contract and I would really like to go after OSUT.

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  10 лет назад

      IF they have Airborne slots available you won't get to volunteer for them, those slots will go to the people that are active Army, have really high PT Scores, and haven't been in any trouble or received counseling. Two guys from my platoon were given airborne slots and their pt scores were over 270. So yes you could get an airborne slot, but your going to have to compete for it, also if your in the NG you can't have one of those slots.

      Unfortunately Scouts are not able to partake in RASP,SFAS,or SFOD-D training.However they can attend Ranger,Airborne,Sniper,and Pathfinder school if they have the opportunity to do so.But if you want to be Special Operations&frontline enlist under 11x Opt 40 or as an 18x.I myself wish that 19D's can be in Ranger Battalion,but obviously they can't then again I myself think that the Army should have a Light Special Operations Reconnaissance Armor unit.Or offer the scouts to partake in the SOF.

    I'm back again with another question. haha Well i took the ASVAB and got an AFQT score of 82 so i can basically do any job i want. but i still really like the thought of being a cavalry scout the only thing is my Dad wants me to really consider doing something else cause it is a more combat job and he thinks it wont help me in life. I'm just asking around is cav scout a good mos for national guard or should i be looking for a job that is less combat relative?

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  10 лет назад +2

      That's up to you man! I personally think that being in the Military in general will help you get a job in the civilian world regardless of what MOS you choose.. But there are obviously some Mos's that have a civilian equivalent, like IT, truck driver, masonry, military police, etc. So if its something YOU want to do, then go for it! But that's a pretty good asvab score, so I would also consider more technical options aswell..

    Hey man, thanks for the video. I'm working with a recruiter out Germany. I'm American but i've lived in the middle east and the UK for most of my life. I'm ready to join, I fly to Germany to enlist the week after christmas, and then go to basic late Januaryish. I've got 19Delta secured (Apparently). I've never lived in the US, i've almost never been there, I consider myself American but you would never guess it if you spoke to me (accent is British/European). I'm pretty sure i'm gonna get smoked just because of that, and i'm cool with it, but how bad would you say it would be? Is there anything you would say I need to prepare for? I've also never had an American drivers license (I had a Saudi one but they took it away from me when I left the country). Is that going to be a problem for me? Cheers.

      675 Dreamer I am almost 19 years old I am going to school to be a welder cause that's what I enjoy doing and I was planning on joining the national guard after I'm done with my schooling next summer. I was thinking about doing a more combat related mos to kind of broaden my skill set and to get what I would consider as the more cool experiences that they get come with combat jobs. Any ideas or thoughts about what mos I should choose?

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  10 лет назад

      matt f Ok, I have friends who are Combat Engineer's and Infantry, and from what they've told me as a Combat Engineer you will be pretty much an Infantrymen with a strong emphasis on building and demolition(Have you searched Army "Sappers"?)so you may like that better with your background in welding. As a part of the Infantry you'll definitely get to do alot of high speed stuff regularly, most of the training during OSUT was similar to Cav Scout Osut, but during the AIT portion of training they focused on more urban ops and battle drills while we got into more scout specific things. A Scout is like an infantrymen except trained in more weapons and electronics, and focuses on performing battlefield reconnaissance undetected. I guess it just comes down to if you'd rather stay within your interest and continue to build things, or if you'd rather broaden your skill set like you said and try a combat MOS. All the choices are great MOS's for sure, but would you rather build/destroy or shoot/kill ?

    • @uzumaki488
      @uzumaki488 10 лет назад

      Yeah I was really considering combat engineer but only if i could get into a sapper unit cause they do more combat related jobs, and i still think that would probably be cool. But the other day i heard about cav scouts and they sound pretty badass cause from wait i read they are like infantry just they are trained in more weapons and tanks and all that cool army stuff and they also do recon and more stealthy type stuff which sounds really cool.

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  10 лет назад

      Yep, as a scout the enemy should never know your observing them and you'll be trained in a variety of ways to conceal your presence and movement, but if for some reason you end up in a firefight you have a very deep arsenal to eradicate the opposition.

    This will be the worst 4 months of your life. Your recruiter will try to make it sound fun, exciting, or challenging but there is a special place in the human experience for this. You will question your existence while undergoing this training. The only part of yourself that you will control is your faith because your ass is theirs. The Devil goes down to Georgia because the weather best resembles what Hell feels like. You will drink 9 liters of water a day and still be dehydrated. You will have permanent blister scars on your feet from the boots. You will catch the plague that the privates carry with them and you will cough up green flem everyday. Your eye lids will constantly fail you and your DS will smoke you until your hands burn in the hot rock pits. Your battle cry will sound like a dying cow because you will have no voice left. In fact, your stomach will have a fiercer growl than your battle cry. You will do more by 9am than most people do all day and at the same time, you will experience more boredom in one day than most people have their whole month. You will wait in line for 1 hour just to eat for 5 minutes. You will pay $5 every other week for a haircut that leaves you bleeding. I've seen privates lose their shit in this training. This is the reality.

    Sorry to keep asking you questions, but i have another question that im trying to see what other people say.
    My recruiter thinks I should enlist now so I can come back from basic, and the GI bill will pay for my schooling. But I don’t like this idea cause my schooling is basically already paid for, and if I don’t get my classes done next semester and summer. I’ll have to wait all the way till July 2016 before I would be done and able to start my career. So I've decided that I am going to wait to go to basic training till august 2015.
    I am thinking about doing a delayed entry program (DEP), but I’m trying to figure out whether I should start DEP after this semester so like in January and I’ll be a Private with my credits. Or start next summer after my spring semester so in like May and by then I’ll have enough credits to get me to Private First Class.
    Basically should i wait to get Private First Class or enlist the beginning of next year?

    • @675_Dreamer
      @675_Dreamer  10 лет назад

      I was kinda in the same situation, I decided to finish college first and then join the Guard.. My advice would be for you to go ahead and finish those classes, since you won't be using your GI bill to pay for them anyways, and then join up afterwards. The DEP is a really good program and it will get you ready for BCT, but as far as your rank, you can be promoted in DEP.. So even if you joined the DEP and continued going to school you would be promoted once you finished your coursework. Don't forget that there is also alot of ship dates for BCT and you can choose the one that works best for you, so you don't have to accept the first date your recruiter throws at you.. Did that help?
