      I accually built a really compact diff, clutch and engine on a car and it took me days to learn how to make it smaller. If u are building anything in this game that spins try not to brace the spinning bits to much because it will twist or flip ur creation depending on how much you do it.

  • @cushiontwin
    @cushiontwin 4 года назад +6

    Great start! However, I recommend trying to use braces a lot more in place of blocks. They reduce the weight of the contraption and if you are not too fussy about objects clipping through them visually, It's a perfect option. I would love to see you make a realistic car; and this being the first episode of many to come. When I first started making cars I would look up tutorials and people would have these elaborate mechanisms that I just for the life of me could not understand. All I knew was that they worked and everyone else seemed to know exactly how to implement a mechanism into besiege.
    It's really refreshing to see someone with knowledge on mechanisms try to implement it into this game with no experience. Great work, Reid, can't wait 'til the next episode!

    What he’s trying to build is an Open Differential, an open differential works exactly as described, it allows one wheel to move at a different speed from the other. The problem is that if one wheel loses traction it can cause all of the power to go to that wheel because it has less resistance and therefore the wheel that has traction doesn’t get any power and you’re stuck which is an obvious problem of off road vehicles. This problem is fixed by a Locked Differential, this setup allows ZERO difference between the wheels. This causes problems on the road because every time you take a turn one of your wheels will slightly lock up and screech until you’re out of the turn. There are also Welded Differentials, which are just modified Open Differentials that act like Locked Differentials. Lastly, Limited Slip Differentials exist and they are a complicated mix between Open and Locked Differentials and allow a tolerance of difference between the two wheels and nothing more.

    So a long time ago there was a physics exploit where if you had four hinges on a wooden block mounted to a swivel joint, that block would start spinning like a perpetual motion machine (in that it would produce more energy than was input and would eventually spin fast enough to cause structural failure)
    I build a sort of pseudo gearbox/switchbox system that used it to power the drive and an angry windmill to use up some of that kinetic energy to prevent it from ripping itself apart.
    It wasn’t very effective but I was quite proud of it.

    Good video, but there are a few things you missed (specifically about Besiege, not about differentials). You should use water cannons instead of standard cannons to push stuff (they cause less lag), build a braced frame of ballasts instead of a big wooden block frame (it could be lighter and fully fireproof), and turn your car using a piston-and-hinge steering mechanism instead of a standard steering block so it automatically returns to the center.
    For specifics, use nobounds to set your water cannon power to like -10 or something. That way it generates thrust in the opposite direction without generating particles. I have a video on my channel somewhere of a whole bunch of steering systems in Besiege that you can use for the tutorial, but it's an old video so it may not actually have the design I'm thinking of.

    HOW DOES ANYBODY MAKE ANYTHING IN BESIEGE

    • @Astra13_Joe
      @Astra13_Joe 4 года назад

      In my case? Time, effort, revisiting it at a later day. Rebuilding even?
      Sometimes I’d be Watching videos and then becoming inspired to try to build something related to something I saw.
      Besiege is pretty great honestly. Even with things like main assembly being a thing now. Simple to understand. But you can easily over engineer just about any concept.

    Oh your design is so cool and apparently you're so good at engineering that you truly understand how these machines work in real life. One small suggestion I would like to give you here is maybe you should slow down the pace a little bit when it comes to the crucial parts of the building process. I'm been playing this game for over 2 years and still from time to time I'm having a hard time catching up with what you're teaching us to do. But still, tremendous work and wonderful video!

    Have you ever heard of From The Depths? I think a mad lad like you could conquer all of Neter with what you dream up! Anyone who knows the game I think you'll agree with me. The Steam description: Over 1000 unique components allow you to build and command voxel vehicles from the deep ocean to outer space- including battleships, planes, submarines and space ships! Forge strategies, allegiances and fleets strong enough to destroy eight deadly factions of the planet and reign supreme.
