    I'm very glad I saw this movie when I did, even if I initially had some doubts. The chemistry between Ember and Wade was beautiful and a great example of how to tell a romantic story. I also love how they did the animation on the characteristics of each element, which especially helped in developing Ember and Wade's relationship.

    I love the animation on the fire, water, and air people, the powers and abilities they have are are very creative, I love how they created an entire fake language for the fire people, and I like the arc Ember goes through. Overall, not one of Pixar's best, but certainly deserving of more attention than it's currently getting.

Heck, why don't they consider adapting kids books into movies for a change. Dream works did it, and it has its varying results. But either way, go support the film, Wish, and Elio before the sequels come!!!

    I totally agree. I actually think it's one of the better Pixars. Sweet, beautiful, good message, and inventive. I think top critics - a jaded lot - hurt this one, since parents are more likely to pay attention to critics than, say, horror fans are. Plus social media decided to pre-judge the movie for the trailer supposedly being cringe or basic or whatever.

    This film was amazing! It's certainly not perfect, nor Pixar's typical blockbuster... but wow, does it tell the most wholesome, genuine story I've seen in a very long time. I can't relate to being an immigrant or anything... but so what, it still told a wholesome story about a wonderful family... the dynamic between Ember and her parents, and her spiritual journey of personal growth, is just so endearing, and beautifully done. Wade's arc, though simple, is so incredibly genuine... and the story's conclusion had me nearly in tears. You can definitely see Pixar's soul shining bright through this film.

  • @sampds
    @sampds Год назад +23

    As someone who had both their grandparents immigrate, as well as me immigrating with my family when I was teen, this movie really moved me.
    I was honestly close to tears during the beginning because it reminded me of my grandfather who needed to sleep in cardboard for a few days when he first movie; the parts of Ember having difficulties between doing what she wanted vs helping her parents really got to me, like I remember being in the theatre kind of contemplating my life and thinking how movies are supposed to distract me and don't remind me of-
    MOVING ON.
    Yeah, the race parts made me really uncomfortable, multiple times, but after certain point I was able to see ignore that.
    I found the romance really cute, the beginning was kind of rough for me but I was honestly glad that instead of having a series of shenanigans to avoid having them together, they actually start dating kind of early; which was honestly refreshing.
    You met someone, you get along well, so you ask them out and then is when you really start building feelings; yeah that feels really grounded, specially with animated movies.
    Is not a perfect movie, but it's a really nice one; I do believe it deserves better than Lightyear, that definitely felt like corporate product.
    I just feel is ashame that they decided to show this two weeks after one of the best animated movies (in general,)

      I connected with this film a lot, too. Especially the scene where Ember finally admits to herself the reason her temper is so bad is because she doesn't want to run the shop, but she never allowed herself to think about what she truly wanted because of guilt and "The only way to repay a life that big, is to give up your own." To me, that feels like the main point of the film; Don't sacrifice your life to live out someone else's. It's HER life. And Wade happened to be a really strong want.

    Nice to see not every critic or reviewer hates this movie. I had no interest to see this movie due to the marketing, then on a whim decided to give it a try and boy am I glad I did! The romance totally caught me off guard but I was so thrilled to see a love story in a Pixar movie. The last one from Pixar may have been Wall-e.
    Sure it's not the best Pixar film but it honestly doesnt need to be. It is what it is, and it's a slice of life almost relaxing and endearing film to watch.
    It seems to have picked up at the box office due to word of mouth. The film will be in theaters all summer because that's how much the director and creative team believe in it. I didn't nessecarily mind the flashbacks, as I think that one of the things that comes with being an immigrant child is they tell you a lot of stories from their past. also, the scene where ember says goodbye to her dad with the very meaningful bow that her father gave to his father when he left his home made my boyfriend cry. it handled it really well and you can tell it came from a place of passion and care. overall, I really liked it.

      @@immoderatusrex4368 I'm gonna disagree with that one. All but the worst Pixar films compare pretty well, head to head, with stand out films from the other studios, usually only edge out by real home runs like Spiderverse. Yes, even Lightyear, which I think suffers most for trying to tie it to Toy Story with that splash line at the start.
      What happened here was a perfect storm of competition coming to fruition all at once.
      Spiderverse is a more visually striking movie with a built in sequel advantage and much MUCH better marketing. And let me be clear, Spiderverse is a REALLY good film, there's no shame coming in second place with this one. Mario, likewise, had a monster IP backing it up, don't get me wrong, the Super Mario Movie is fine, but it would not have gotten remotely those numbers if it had been an original illumination IP.
      And Ruby Gilman is doing the rounds right now and doing even WORSE than Elemental and proving that the TLW was not part of some new unified creative vision. Though to be fair, it's floundering 'HA!' on a much more modest budget.

    My parents were immigrant, asian immigrants, no less. The idea of repaying one’s debt to their parents and continuing on their dreams hits close to home, especially as, like Ember, my dream career is in the arts and might not guarantee good pay. They gave up so much, worked so hard to give us opportunity. When i was small, my father would repeat to me how it was such an honor that i was born American. They grew up poor. There’s a lot of guilt laid upon immigrant children, especially second generation.
    But as time moved on, i grew to learn that the dream was not for me to be everything they didn’t get to be. They just wanted to know i’ll be ok. I think thats a very sweet narrative for elemental. I think divorcing it from our real life identities allows the creators to explore a story without dabbling in the specific racial elements.
    And i feel like, similar to turning red, only people in the know will really identify with message of this story. Not to point fingers, but….schaffrillas. But that’s ok. Not all movies click with everyone. This was an immigrant story-and immigrants will obviously find themselves seen in the characters.
    Other than that, its cute and a visual treat. Fun movie, and i found tge more grounded and diwn to earth story a nice change of pace. I use stories to process my own trauma and grief, and the chiller narratives are often more helpful than the grand epics.

    I would argue about that Zootopia criticism because yes, predators need to eat prey in order to survive in the REAL world, but it’s established early on in the movie that it was all during prehistoric times in this FICTIONAL universe, and we’re never told that predators still need to eat prey for survival in the modern era as they seem to live perfectly fine side by side without any food problems, so I still think they handled it well in my opinion.

    On the topic of Romance weakening female characters, crotchety old man Miyazaki said it best. 'A heroin does not need a hero. A friend and companion, yes, someone to share the burden, to learn from, and to help, but not a savior.'
    There's nothing wrong with Romance so long as it doesn't subsume a protagonist into the orbit of her partner. A shared life, yes, but not a subservient one.
    I think Elemental did that pretty well, honestly. Wade is not a heroic figure in any sense of the word, and he screws up and causes Ember distress as well. At the same time, he does 'man-up' for Ember without becoming a completely different person. Rather, he toughens up for the sake of somebody he cares about.

    I think the bow part at least was well-placed in the movie. Like Ember just realized that she didn't want to take over her dad's shop and he just comes in and drops one big oof by revealing this extra thing which makes it harder for Ember to tell him that she doesn't want to run the shop.

    I feel bad that this movie didn’t do so well on it’s opening weekend, I honestly blame the marketing and how people were so quick to judge it.
    I get that people were skeptical when they heard Peter Shon was directing it because of the Good Dinosaur, but I still had faith in the movie. Plus knowing that The Good Dinosaur had a troubled production history and that higher ups just threw to Peter, I think he did a good job with The Good Dinosaur. And this is an unpopular opinion but I think The Good Dinosaur is a pretty nice movie, it’s not the best movie that came out of Pixar’s library, but I still think it’s a pretty good film and doesn’t really deserve all the hate it gets. And this is just MY OPINION.

    Moral of this video: There are good movies and there are bad movies. And just because a movie studio like Pixar made a bad movie or a mid movie doesn't mean they'll never recover. Not every project is perfect and it shows that Pixar can learn from their mistakes to make better movies, unlike Disney, in which nowadays focus on creating terrible live action remakes and movies that pander to SJWs.

    I fully agree with everything you said. It's a good movie and doesn't deserve the ridiculous amount of hate it's getting. The worst of it comes from the Non-binary character they snuck in there and has literally no impact on the plot asides from some world dressing. While i don't care for movies that throw that overblown crap in your face as if it's special or something, the same can be said for people who latch on to this insignificant part of the move and act like it's a the literal devil or that the movie revolves around it. I almost feel like that character was forced into the movie due to some mandate given how quickly they brush over it.
    I didn't even notice the first time around and i had to watch it again and pay close attention to the part where that character shows up and i still almost missed it.
    Otherwise, I felt pretty good seeing an actual romance from Pixar/disney again. It felt incredibly refreshing. reminded me very heavily of the 90's disney movies and their romances.

  • @DeadFishFactory
    @DeadFishFactory Год назад +1

    It's okay. Not an animated move that I will think about after it ends (at least in a good way), but definitely not a bad movie like the trailers made it out to be. This movie is totally deserving of a stream, but I can't endorse it as something you should watch in theaters as it's just not worth the cost.
    [Spoilers]
    No matter how they try to show that the fire elements are discriminated against, they just keep showing that it is justified due to the fact that they are literal fire.
    And Ember and Wade being able to touch because they "changed each other's chemistry" by touching once is extremely contrived and shows that they just couldn't find a way for them to physically touch without just declaring it. You can't use a throwaway line like "we changed our chemistry when we touched" to resolve your main plot point.

    • @Bustermachine
      @Bustermachine Год назад +1

      On your critique, normal elements also aren't sapient amorphous humanoids, so I'm willing to cut a little slack for the fundamental conceit of the film.
      Though I do agree, some of the dialogue was excessive and very on the nose for no real reason. It's going to be self evident to the audience why Wade and Ember's relationship is a struggle.
      And honestly, it didn't really need to be explained. We know Wade is a wimp (he can tough it out, when he cares, but he's kinda apathetic by default) and Ember CAN control her temper and thus her temperature . . . So the reason they can touch should really just be . . . because they accommodate each other.
      They take care not to hurt each other.
      Like in a relationship.
      Heck, we even see that touching isn't trivial for them. Wade's body is visibly boiling when he holds Ember's hand. Wade can still be evaporated and Ember can still be snuffed out. It's not some love conquers all magic. It's just love.

    • @blueflare3848
      @blueflare3848 5 месяцев назад

      Not only was the twist painfully predictable, it also makes no sense. The movie already established that elements can harm each other. Water extinguishes fire. Fire burns the earth people. Fire evaporates water. So can they only touch each other for a short period of time without hurting each other?

    Yeah, and Disney sure doesn't look like they care to do anything but double-down on the romance-adverse GurlBoss leads anytime soon with Snow White apparently being actively afraid of giving the Prince anything to do at all. It's really sad because tbh, a lot of people (myself included) like romance and yeah I DID aspire in part to have a partner one day. I wanted a career and hobbies too, but did wanting a happy, settled life with a partner mean I was suddenly antifeminist and outdated? I sure af hope not. But according to current Disney philosophy, I may as well be a TradWife for finding some personal fulfillment *with* someone else.

I get annoyed when people make assumptions about movies before seeing them especially after seeing their trailers. Sometimes it can be warranted. *Cough* 2016 Ghostbusters! *Cough* But, at other times, it can be tedious and cringey.

    I gotta be honest. I really hope they decide to make some kind of Disney Channel spin off or sequel series to this. I just saw this movie, and while recent Pixar movies have been okay to me, I have not had this much love for a Pixar story since the golden years of Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, and Finding Nemo. I'm not even joking. I truly view this movie in the same light as those movies. You'd be surprised at how much I'm a sucker for animated love stories, which are my favorite kind of animated movies, and while what they did in this movie is cliche, it felt like something you'd never expect from a Pixar film. I've never really seen them handle romance in a similar fashion as the main Disney studio does with their movies, but wow, did the romance in this movie blow me away to the point i would really love to see a continuation of the story to see they're relationship grow.
    They could even set the series within the months before they even have to leave Element City, but after seeing this movie I would just love to see these characters again.

    Waited until this movie came out on Disney plus to watch it dusa Disney promoting it so badly had to cuz this instantly became one of my favorite animated romances. There were some minor issues with the world-building but I think most of those minor issues could have been flushed out if the movies run time had been just a little bit longer to better explain a few things unfortunately that would have meant a bigger budget which there is no way Disney was going to give to this movie. Pros definitely outweigh the cons in this movie though.
