Bejeweled is among those games that are so simple and so addictive at the same time. Tetris, Minesweeper, Picross all share this behaviour. As an aspiring game developer myself, this type of game is really hard to come up with but dabbling with it really help understand the fundamentals of how a game effects the brain of the player. I really liked this talk. Thanks to GDC for sharing this.
Aaaaaaaa, it's very coolio to see Bejeweled as a main topic in a GDC talk! .u. Very glad it's available to watch now. Also had no idea about Colors Game's existence, holy heck.
I love Bejeweled and its optional payment concept. When I intended to work for a game's company making browser games (you know... payment walls... scam... ugh), I said I prefered this method of payment in mobile games, if any. So they told me "That's why they don't make money." Friggin German games industry. Absolute scum.
Wait, Snackers is in every game? There's a cameo in a UFO in Twist and the SNACKERS code, her name appears on the leaderboard in 3, the Cat's Eye in Blitz (also maybe meows). Anyone know where she is in 1 and 2?
Speaking of perverted, I'm not sure what sites Jason Kapalka has visited to affect his personal Google results, but that definitely doesn't show up at all when I google Pacman, PacMan, Pac-Man OR Pac Man.
Bejeweled definitely did not invent that game concept, not even "Color Game" did.. I recall playing a solitaire game with the same combine-three swapping concept back on my Amstrad CPC.. I think it came one one of those many magazine-bundled public domain discs. They only managed to market and micromonetize the shit out of that game concept.
It's only humble when you're not pulling other people under the bus with you. There was no need for the slight on Marble Madness. There was tons of ways to phrase the Marble Madness and coke thing other than the "Well, if they're letting in Marble Madness..." way which overwrote the coke thing anyway, since he full well knows the event planners did not have a coke-drenched machine themselves and WAS merely questioning that game's validity to be there. Also...intentionally lying but not saying what it is? What is the point of even watching the rest after he said that, since I won't even know what parts to trust and what part not to trust as truth? Humble guys don't manipulate people or put others down. Using scripted self-deprecation to mask an obvious superiority complex is not humble. He's arrogant as fuck, just with a mumbly, quiet voice. Don't mistake that for being humble.

This guys is crazy. Twist is the only good Bejeweled.
the "hmm" he does in between words is so weird/distracting. A guy I work with (grown man) does the same thing. nice guy, but it sounds like your pinching one off m8.

15:51 ah yes.. the four unused Gems... while 3 can be found in the files of the Older Revisions of Diamond Mine, poor Gem11 was absent from those.
My favourite match 3 game that's never replaced by others.
15:51 Pretty interesting to see that there are more than 7 gems.
This guy earns points simply for repeating the question into the mic immediately after it's been asked.
Yeah, it's nice. Members of the crowd could be hard for each other to hear when they're too far away, so it helps that he's repeating their questions.
3900 hours played 2 Deluxe so far, over 14 years.
Just a simple game. No BS blockers and microtransactions commonly seen in mobile Bejeweled clones
Bejeweled is one of the best game franchises i've played. Glad to be here to hear this!

When he talks he reminds me of John Carmack (ID Software). John usually says “Mmm” after some of his sentences, this guy kind of does that same thing.
very much so.
Yeah

I have no idea as well, so far as I know only Twist and Blitz...
My favorite game from my favorite game designer guy. Even my youtube grew because of this game!
Next up, new release: Bejeweled 99
Thank you Jason Kapalka! This game is pretty much my life at times, love playing it to this day. Even the first game.
Why did Bejeweled Twist take 3 years to make when something like bejeweled 1 was so much shorter?
Probably because it was a radical gameplay overhaul
I hate how EA has perverted PopCap into a souless live service company.

One of my reasons why I hate EA so much

@@andrewsparkes8829 The Algorithms and Search Results will change over time, obviously because this was years ago and things will change over time.
Well, yeah, now it is indeed a classic game.
Man, remember the mobile java version of Bejeweled? God, those controls were super clunky.

well now we need a talk on gorf, also marathon, really want to have a talk on marathon by jason jones
Why does Bejeweled 1 look slightly different in the presentation?
It's a screenshot of an older version.
Cool insight into a classic game
Such a honest and humble guy, great presentation!

Thumbs up everyone admitting having played Pac Man in high school ... (Feels old now, ... thank you *self!* 😾)
I don't see a pic of women in bikinis when i google pacman - why is it on the screen?
This was from eight years ago. Algorithms and search results change. Either way he was probably just going for a joke, so who cares?
>Classic game
>Bejeweled
*puts gun in mouth*
Bejeweled was released in 2000. It IS a classic game.
Well, considering this is a 19 year-old (this year) game franchise.

Same
It is extremely distracting.
