They've definitely upped the amount of time given to the first person, I think they've figured out it's very hard to pick up a bunch of half finished mechanics without a solid skeleton
MrLonelyDK did a fantastic job adding those final touches, the end product looked fantastic and the levels gave a perfect tech demo of what could be done with all the resources
Everyone cooked this time, one of the most complete and polished games from this series. The guy that made the art styles match is the goat btw a mismatch of art styles is always something that bugs me about the games from this challenge.
yep, i may actually buy and play this game if it were expanded. but that old mismatched style would absolutely be a deal breaker to me, so the guy that saved the artstyle by making it coherent definitely polished the project in a much needed way
It's actually really refreshing to see a completely different game concept from the previous videos. No boss battles, no tower defense, just something completely different. Love it!
Personally, I would have liked if the king stayed real-time with the pieces turn-based to really emphasize how care-free he is in comparison to his strict subjects
As per usual Oliver ruined the game with his own agenda, he always seems to come into the game with the idea to completely redo it instead of adding or building on what’s there
@@josephventura3632he did build off it this time tho since he kept the original chaotic gameplay but just added his version as an extra game mode instead of changing everything
Props to MrLonelyDK for coming in clutch with the art overhaul! No offense to the dev who added the 3D assets, but they definitely didn’t mesh very well with the art style of the characters Edit: finished watching his part, bro was the best last dev this game could’ve asked for. Great job polishing the game!
well i kinda like the idea of the old concept "you have to babysit ur king who move randomly and will suicide itself" wich isnt an issue anymore when you get in a turn based game where you can move EVERY piece at the same time then the king move, so the real time probleme of babysit ur king and have to do decision making of what piece u move and you do with them while the king continue to run aimlessly doesnt exist anymore, but that's just a different direction is idea wasne bad and probably easier to expend with and do a interessing balenced game, that's just less original than a turn based/real time game at the same time, but its probably for the best gameplay wise tbh
Nah he still took out half of the original concept for no reason besides the fact that he didn't like it. The real time strategy part of the wandering king was what made the initial concept so unique
I think what would be nice is giving value to each of the pieces and then at the start of each level, you get to pick which pieces you'd like to use for the level instead of just giving them to you. Each level would have its own custom level value and you can't exceed that value with your pieces.
That’s such a good idea, I love affording the player more ways to approach like that! Something I wanted to add was like, a “hiring phase” in between levels. During the rounds, if you played more efficiently or stepped on certain squares, you could get coins that would let you hire better versions of pieces or something! Your idea would really gel with that setup
Lighthoof started this off amazingly. 11:30 **Cartboard Games sees turn-basd, chess themed puzzle game centered around traps and avoiding them.** "It's too complex and slow. Let's remove the traps and add enemies." There's always one, isn't there? I thought it was going to be MashUp this time, but he came in clutch by including both modes. Edit: And MrLonelyDK comes in to save the day! Three cheers for MrLonelyDK. Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!
Really liked this one, all the devs made thoughtful contributions and the whole thing came together really well in the end. I liked the direction the first dev took it and it was great to see everybody working to enhance such an interesting concept. Great job!
Agreed, they have made some really good potential games in these, if given the ability to communicate and a couple of months, you could see several of these becoming something. (The super hero fire putting out one, the carnival one and this one all seem to have bigger potential)
Mashup Games is based for keeping both movement styles in the game, devs for future videos should learn that kind of respect :D After watching the rest of the video, all of these devs are cool, this is one of the best episodes yet
I think this one is my favourite project so far, the art style, gameplay and details are consistent, look professional and the game is replayable. Love the unique idea and character art!
Olly redeemed himself - can't beat a good round of polish, and making turn-based/live-action toggleable is a great way to add "value" to the project. Hats off to the chap.
I love seeing Strompy and younger game devs add a significant amount to other’s projects. Cool seeing younger, competent people coming in to help out, and do better than most adults
Definitely cool when someone with their time stretched as thin as his is can come and dedicate their time to what they love. Pathways like this, to be a part of a larger project and come with a strong work ethic, will definitely set the way for a future more enjoyable and greater than 99% of the world. His English is quite good too!
Honestly kudos to dev 5, added some really great additions that could be (and was) expanded upon for future devs, all with going to school and homework ect. Congrats! Great game everyone
I think its a good thing. Having the chaos and RNG too high would mean you wouldn't be able to make the puzzles too hard as the king would just run into enemies or traps constantly. By having him follow the queen and be redirected using candy you can now have pretty intricate puzzles as the king is more predictable and less likely to kill himself. It increases the potential of the game and also removes an element that can be frustrating at times. RNG is sometimes good but not when it can make you game over without you being able to react to it, its better when RNG causes something which you then have to tackle.
This was a great pass the game challenge. It was very “yes, and?” Unfortunately there’s been too many instances of some game devs absolutely doing their own thing instead of adding on to the previous devs vision. I think this series is best when they try to improve what they have instead of changing everything to fit what they like.
Finally a good, original game. I was really hoping to see more than just another survival tycoon type game, and this is perfect! I'm not even such a fan of puzzle games, but the devs really did a solid job on this one. They all complimented each other flawlessly.
What I would add would be evil versions of the queen, knight, rook, etc, that try to kill the king. To stop the evil pieces, the player has the ability to place traps of their own, however, this comes with a risk of killing one of the player’s own pieces. This would make each level very chaotic, very fast, and overall, add a new layer of strategy to the game.
love how this came together. i'd definitely like to see it expanded and more polished, but the basic pitch and art style is already fun. also loved the vibe with the music, voices and lighting. really well done.
This one came out great. I'd be interested in playing a finished version of this, for sure. Every single dev contributed something great, too. Lighthoof actually just started by making the entire concept in one go, somehow. I have no complaints!
Honestly hoping this gets revisited, I love chess and this is a pretty unique spin on it. It would be a shame to let all that work go unappreciated; beautiful art, music, enjoyable gameplay.
ive been watching these over the weeks and i like to see that you guys are really trying to develop this series with the viewers feedback in mind. its really starting to come into its own
I agree, but as a product manager, some of the ideas that devs wanted to add (like the HP system so pieces wouldn't die instantly) will ruin the game 100%. This game should probably be approached as fruit ninja was (everything that seems too complicated should not be part of the game)
This was some of the best series of developers I’ve seen in these challenges yet. They synergize incredibly well. The first dev made probably the best base I’ve ever seen. Sound effects and music were on point. We had good gameplay decisions and some questionable ones. We had level design. And then we had good polish. Perfect for this game.
The longer startups and limited removal clause have had such a powerful effect on the end product. The final game is different than the original idea but is still a working game! Fancy that. Also, Blackthorn showing up in the video calls in a black suit makes this feel like a Polybius experiment.
Starting with a weird genre and seeing how devs work with it is a lot of fun- future contestants, try starting with a visual novel just for the madness. Hehe.
Excellent episode. Significantly better when the devs adjust or improve the features rather than outright replacing or removing things (like the scenery/bg). Misunderstandings are pretty funny, but it's better to see them build in the wrong direction instead of destroying and rebuilding things.
I love that they expanded on the other devs work, it’s refreshing to see. No game breaking changes, and it worked out really well. Definitely helped that the first dev basically made a demo, but solid work from everyone! I’d play this if it were released.
I just want to give a shoutout to mrlonelydk for doing the movement system rework! It's one of those "unsung-hero changes" that made such a big difference in making the levels way more visually exciting/interesting than if it was just left as a rectangular grid. Great job!!

Fantastically original, hard to get in these modern times. Very nearly got it wrecked later but saved by another dev who can think out of the box.
