I can't believe Ethan is 60. I always think of him as the younger brother who stopped aging at 30.
They sort of give you the feeling that they don't try hard enough when writing and directing their films. If they are just hiding the effort they put into their movies, I applaud their modesty. If they are indeed not really trying that hard, then its amazing how they consistently make not only good but unquestionably original films. Either way I envy the pair.
+Dykthemonkey There's no way they don't try hard. Actors that have worked with them describe how absolutely meticulous the Coen Bros. are, giving zero room for improv./input. They know exactly what they want every time they make a movie
wat

I don’t think it’s that they don’t try hard
I think it’s that they’re always messing and playing with ideas
That’s so fucking wrong lmao
I have rarely seen the Coens this happy while giving an interview. Maybe it was because the interviewer is obviously a huge fan. The audience questions were kind of lame, but they answered them graciously.
fascinating aren’t they, absolute legends of the game
Hail Caesar was an attractive entertaining very escapist romp. But over time, people are starting to realize how good Intolerable Cruelty was. Especially with the supporting cast. Also, Clooney's comic flexible face is a marvel in it.
THANK YOU FOR THAT! Intolerable Cruelty is a great underrated movie. People are so dumb that they don't realize that the coens constant use of cliche is on purpose.
Who exactly?
"You just figure out what makes the story go, and sometimes they're comedies and sometimes they're not."
That's pretty wild, not knowing whether or not a movie is going to be a comedy, before you write it.
They just let the story unfold.
These brothers are geniuses.
Great interview and video. Gets straight to the point, doesn't ramble, good questions, great upload. Cheers.
It bugs me that the movie scenes are deleted in these types of interviews. I'm sure it's about studio clearances or whatever but c'mom, you're promoting the movie! Makes no sense to omit when the panel is discussing it.
Having said that, I'm here to find out more about Alden. :) He really did steal the show.
my idols
I've yet to see Hudsucker Proxy or the Coen's solo projects, but I've seen everything else, & I've yet to see anything close to a stinker. I'd be hard pressed to claim a favorite, or which film would be considered their weakest. These guys are true gems of the filmmaker universe, and always produce something amazingly entertaining, and interesting.
Hudsucker Proxy is probably their most underrated movie, people didn't get the style it seems like. Maybe also it is a little confusing that it is set in 1959, but much of it feels more like the 30s.
@@Studeb I've heard a bit of negativity towards Lady Killers, & I thought it was great.
The main reason that one doesn't feel that great is that it's a remake of a classic Hammer horror comedy, it feels a little labored in comparison. @@proto-geek248
look! it's Janos Slynt

Really like the question about their own favourite, I don't believe that they don't have favourites, they always seem slightly dismissive of their biggest cult movie, The Big Lebowski, my favourite of theirs.
Joel really knows how to dress.
Who is the interviewer?
GREAT!
Q: “What advice do you have for an aspiring film maker?”
A: Money.
They couldn’t say it... they knew it tho 😂
Real answer: Get other people to give you their money.

Sheer genius(es).
Man there must be more than a dozen ads on this. Interrupting mid sentence if not mid-word. Real bad.
What novel by James dicky?
To the White Sea (the author's name is spelt 'Dickey') :)
So these guys have the Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant theology of the Trinity just kind of rattling around in their heads?
Huh. That's pretty wild.
Hail, Caesar! = Catholic
True Grit = Protestant
What is their Orthodox Christianity movie?
@@dataassassin280 "If we had but... but..." "Faith?" "FAITH! Faith, faith, faith"
Are you sure it's Catholic? Sounds a little Protestant, there.
@@jimluebke3869 wasn't Mannix a Catholic? If I remember correctly, he confessed in a Catholic Church
@@dataassassin280 Very true, although the emphasis on faith (without mentioning cooperation with faith / grace) is the Protestant point of view.
I still need to watch "True Grit".
@@jimluebke3869 the girl in true grit has protestant work ethic as espoused by the protestant faith: frugality, diligence, etc.
HOLLYWOOD TODAY SUCKS! When's the next movie coming out, Coen Brothers?
You think it sucked six years ago,
you should see it now 🤮
The good news is, after releasing some solo work, they're back together working on a new project.
WE WANT MORE HERBERT MARCUSE!!

Iamannexi gets it, Kelly Brown does not.
lol did this interview er even watch the fucking film?! 😂 "Yea, this era people couldn't hold in their secrets." Thats literally one of the main things that happens in the film.
the people who don;t like this film are the same ones who praise Teen age mutant Ninja turtles lol!!! DIALOGUE is God in movies....if you have an action movie with the worst dialogue...its a POS....If you have a movie with AMAZING dialogue with some action THAT is perfection. I fucking hate ppl who watch movies not that much but go every now and then and say this is a POS. Which turns ppl off. tsk tsk tsk tsk.
MovieHound17 Considering you are talking about good dialogue but you can't even type correctly is ironic. Mad Max fury road is a masterpiece with very little dialogue. Citizen Kane is a masterpiece with very little action. Fargo is a masterpiece with fair ammounts of both. There is nothing like : "this is what makes movies good, this is what makes them bad." I conclude that you are the one who should be watching more films. Have a good day.
+Mert Amasyalı well said!
My God they really dropped the ball on this one.
I agree. it was just okay, probably their worst since Intolerable Cruelty
@@jaybo2042 Intolerable Cruelty was pretty okay
It was okay if you're a fan of old Hollywood. It has some good parts like the Navy scene, the Communist meeting, the Orthodox, Protestant, Catholic and Rabbi scene, but it's not their best film, comedically or otherwise.
This interviewer comes off like an arrogant guy. 😂😂
I'm yelling profanities at the interviewer. This guy is awful!
