The women were screaming with Dani to sympathize with her pain, which has never been done for her before. The Horga are the 'family' Dani has needed all her life.
True, they lured her in and it worked on her because she always was the odd one out. With her family, her friends and even her boyfriend didn't want her anymore. Being taken into the cult (more or less brainwashed, but still) she finally felt like she had a place she belonged and that's why she smiled at the end
when my friend watched this movie they texted me "i just started watching it and my favorite character so far is pelle" and like an hour and a half later they just followed it up with a message saying "nvm☠"
midsommar is a fever dream while tripping on acid with swedish folklore, and hereditary is the aftermath of the the trip with supernatural worshipping.
What I always found interesting about this film is how the tapestry at the very beginning before the opening scene depicts the general plot of the movie. Such a fantastic film, one of my favorite little details about the film
I just read a comment that pointed out the sun in that tapestry had the same exact smile Dani did at the end of the movie...I found that interesting...
I saw this in theaters with a group of friends last summer, and NONE of us knew anything about the movie other than it was about a cult, and it was from A24 😂
This film is a masterpiece but it's incredibly disturbing at the same time. Makes one wonder what goes on in Aster's mind when he was planning these films.
Midsommar is the most cathartic break up movie I've ever seen. Love it so much. A small, sadistic part of me wants to tell you to go watch "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons", buuuuut, I think that might be a half hour of "...what tha...no, no, no, no, no....WHAT THA??...EEEEEWWWWWW!!" It is directed by Ari Aster, and I made it thru it once. Once was more than enough. I'll rewatch Hereditary and Midsommar endlessly. Will take a hard skip on rewatching "The Strange Thing About The Johnsons".
If you like these "slow descent into madness" movies I have 3 recommendations: THE WITCH (2015): A24 movie by the same director as "THE LIGHTHOUSE". I don't recommend watching a lot of A24 movies in a row (although I love them all) because you begin to see the seams of the structure and pacing and it gets a bit predictable. If you don't mind that, go ahead. CLIMAX (2018): By the same director as "ENTER THE VOID" (a visually stunning movie BTW, highly recommend). French dancers rehearsing in an abandoned school during a snowstorm, someone spikes the sangria bowl with LSD. I watched it once back when it came out and still remember every single scene. It sticks with you. SUSPIRIA (2018): Renowned dance company with dark secrets. Also soundtrack by Thom Yorke. Also Tilda Swinton is three characters. At 2.5 hours, it's the definition of a slow burner, although it´s so bonkers it's more like a pressure cooker. The original from 1977 is a masterpiece, but very very different stylistically, this new one is more of a spiritual successor than a remake. I recommend them both. EDIT: I've been informed that THE WITCH is on the channel already (and if you didn't like it, that's totally fine, these movies can be polarizing), so I'll toss in a bonus one that I forgot to mention: ANNIHILATION (2018): I don't know man, this one is a mindfuck. Big ass soap bubble dome slowly growing, Natalie Portman goes inside to investigate, crazy shit happens. Very Lovecraftian. Not as slow burning, the craziness certainly builds up but it's starts strong and keeps going. Also the expedition crew (aka the whole cast for most of the movie) is all women, and they're very well written, which is always a plus. Also, I totally forgot that CLIMAX is also A24. The extremely long takes and the french threw me off. It feels like a A24 quality foreign student film (because in a way it kinda is, production wise. Watch it and then check how it was made, it's amazing)
If you don't find emotional support with your disconnected boyfriend, find it with a cult. Wait, maybe that's not the healthiest bit of advice... Still, sums up the movie pretty well.
She needed a therapist, too ,much to put on him. The moment your partner feels like they are taking "care" of you it's over and should be. This movie really reminded me of a ex I had.
@@jwoods9659 She did have a therapist and is also on medication. But it's made pretty clear that he's giving her absolutely no support and yet he still acts like it's a burden and makes her feel guilty for it. That's an *awful* person.
@@xen0bia Bearing other peoples hurt and pain IS a burden. He should have just left, he felt guilty and RESPONSIBLE for her. Built resentment that why he gave no support she felt guilty on her own because she knew she was leaning on him too much. I know I sound like total ass but really there was nothing good that was going to come out of that sometimes it's best to walk away. SO you know don't get me wrong yes your support your partner but she clearly had far far more personal issues than he was able to handle. I've been there never going back
@@jwoods9659 Except he wasn't bearing any of her pain, it was pretense. He was avoiding having to do any emotional support, not really feeling any empathy for her, and was consistantly acting detached from her and gaslighting her as a result. And I highly disagree that he felt responsible for her and that's why he didn't broke with her. No he didn't break up with her, something he had been putting off for months, years, who knows, because he's an emotionally inept person. And I know what you are saying about people who are extremely emotionally dependant and always laying down their problems unto everyone around them. I had a bipolar coworker off her meds that did pretty much exactly that, and it was toxic as Hell, but Dani is not portrayed like that at all. She runs off to cry alone away from people to not "burden" them - that's entirely uncharacteristic of the archetype. On the other hand, I've also known emotionally inept people who run away at the first sight of an emotion that's inconveniencing them or making them uncomfortable, and entirely failing to provide an ounce of support and comfort to a loved one in a rare instance of need. So yeah, neither type of people are good, but I'm pretty sure the movie was going for the latter from what we can see and deduce from it.
Ari Aster said that most of the characters are trapped in a horror film, but the main character, Dani, is living in a twisted fairy tale. Also the majority of the commune’s traditions were ACTUALLY believed in the past.
Sorry to say but no, the commune's traditions where not believed in the past. Atleast not i Sweden. Ari picked and choosed from a bunch of different and creepy folktales and super old traditions from a number of different countries. Blot where something that could occur during the viking era but Midsommar is mostly celebrated for "johannes döparens dag" and is a more "christian" holiday than this more makes it out to be. Vikings did if anything celebrate "Sommarsolståndet". But "Midsommar" have never been proven to be celebrated before Christianity came to Sweden.
After going through a really emotionally scarring breakup, this movie hit different. I think it does s great job capturing the pain of love as it’s “horror”
Yay! Now that you watched both this and Hereditary, did you notice that they are both essentially ascension arcs for Dani (Midsommar) and Peter (Hereditary) ending in a crowning? Very deranged and messed up ascension arcs, but ascension arcs none the less.
Unsettling, mind-numbing and understandably subjective in its use of terror and horror, Ari Aster shows his genius and craftsmanship with “Midsommar”, a film that delves into the unraveling of human suffering, trauma, agitation, isolation, grief, anxiety, depression, loss, despair, abandonment and still manages to depict it in the most unsettling yet frighteningly realistic position possible. Once again, Ari Aster’s personal demons and struggles help him pave the way to creating not so much a culturally enriching story as opposed to one where the setting, creepy imagery and the entitled folklore weaves deeply into said story to where once again, it feels way too real. The events in this film display the destruction of true innocence combating the lunacy and unpredictability of human nature at its absolute worst. Other factors outside of the themes work equaling as well with the dark comedy actually advancing the story as well as dialed up tension and suspense, creepy imagery and phenomenal performances with Florence Pugh being the standout to an outstanding degree. Reminded me a lot of Hereditary and even more of films like Annihilation, because to me, this is art. You ease your way forward, take a slow burn through the content and then the twist comes your way making you question everything you just saw. Once again though, Aster understands how subjective horror can be and doesn’t hold the audiences hand for them to make up their own minds. This is how you make a horror movie, Hollywood. So take notes from Ari Aster cause he’s apparently no one trick pony.
Hollywood won't care. They will go for the cheap route, so that they can make more money. Hereditary and Midsommar weren't really box office hits... sadly. So, unfortunately they will draw doodles instead of making notes.
I know you probably thought this was horrible. But I've been thinking about this movie for so long not being able to sleep because of it. And I haven't even seen it. Seeing your reaction and the fact that you blurred out so much so I didn't have to actually see it answered all my questions about it without needing to have all the awful pictures. Bro, on completely unrelated terms, I would HIGHLY recommend you to check out the film *The Invitaion* ! With Tom Hardy clone Logan Marshall Greene (who I really liked as Ryan´s brother in The O.C.) as the lead! It´s also kind of a horror-ish movie, but I won´t spoil anything more to you. It´s best enjoyed going in blind, I even really appreciated it after multiple viewings, because I´m a dumbass. But today, it´s a clear 10/10 movie for me!
Yes, I agree with the low budget argument. But every FIVE MINUTES?? Come on, you must be exaggerating. Plus, the awkwardness is kind of the point of the movie, without spoiling too much, please!
This is the kind of film you need to watch after you getting out of a toxic relationship. But as long as it doesn't involve you burning your boyfriend to death with a frickin bear costume.
I just have to say how much I appreciate the whisper yelling. On a lot of reaction channels you have to constantly adjust the volume when they freak out. Thank-you for keeping the levels in check and I love your videos in general.

What I love about people who aren't good with horror movies is that they tend to judge the movie based on the actual movie! Most people I know that watched the movie with me love horror and aren't that easily scared, and they judged the movie's length and how annoying the characters were. Like that doesn't matter, it made sense that Dani was emotional and how she felt about Christan and why everyone stayed. It feels like they don't understand the movie as much as I do, which is why I love to see people like you *actually* watch the movie
One of my favorites, right behind Hereditary. You actually pointed out something early on that I never gave a thought to, the painting in her room of a crowned girl, kissing a bear..🤯
I can safely say this movie made me cry. But I can't explain why. When the final scene played out, tears were just rolling down my cheeks, this film was an experience that affected me. Not a single damn movie has done that to me in 25 years of living.
For me this movie really resonated mainly by it's uniqueness...I couldn't give more praise to Ari Astrer for what he brings to the table in terms of indie horror because like it or not it's original, fresh and has it's own style. And yes as mentioned it's not something meant to be 'enjoyed' it's really about having a personal experience of it and anyone can have any analysis of it they desire. Once again the theme of grief is prominent like in Hereditary, more importantly this movie touches upon the relativism of culture...It presents us with people who have ways and traditions which we automatically reject and find strange if not immoral, all while contrasting with the amount of close connection and community bond we could never understand, this clashes with our group of visitors that are presented as either ignorant, or selfish and morally skewed, willing to advance their own profit, steal ideas from each other and lacking the capacity to have true connection and communication even between friends but especially between Mark and Danny. This movie is based around them and takes a very honest and realistic look at a failing relationship and what happens when a relationship dwindles into reproach lack of communication and all that follows. BTW there is a great extended scene dedicated to that where Danny and Mark have an argument which is very open and reveals a lot
lol, as i was leaving the theater, I said, "That movie is so fucked up" over and over. And couldn't decide if I hated it or liked it. lol Edit: Do "Uncut Gems" :)
The white mosaics on the Sydney opera house were made in Sweden. The Bear painting (and others seen) are made by Swedish artist John Bauer and depict Scandinavian folklore scenes :)
This is the best horror movie of the last decade. It's so disturbing and beautiful at the same time. You hate it and you love it. You want to look away but you can't. Ari Aster is a master playing with the emotions of his audience whenever and however he wants.
This might be my favourite reaction video ever. I saw the movie a few weeks ago and that was one of the most intense movie experiences in years. Seeing your reaction was pure deja vu. Sure, reaction vids are all about seeing other peoples' points of view. But in this case I just enjoyed the sameness of our reactions! :) "NO... NO... NOOO! NOOOOOOO! PISS OFF, MOVIE!". Yes, exactly! Something twisted but interesting I noticed while watching midsommar. Some of those people didn't have anything left except to live there. Like no family or anything. That guy mentioned he was a orphan til they took him in. Dani I guess felt the same. With no family. I notice that in other cult flicks like someone feels like joining a cult is better then being alone. And that's alright😂 P.S. you should follow Florence Pugh on Instagram. She's the CUTEST! 😌😍
No, he was explaining that their community is all one family, its not yours and mine, for me and for you, its ours, all of us. So when his parents died and he became an orphan, he was not alone because the entire community held him and loved him and were there for him. Compared with the life of the girl who lost her entire family, and her bf of 4yrs who was supposed to also be her family is an ass pulling away and making excuses... then gets high and cheats. And I know christian was high, but he chose to drink that after the convo about ‘mating’ with the redhead, and knowing it would ‘lower his defences’. I dont think he deserved to be burned alive, but he was an ass for sure lol. I read the movie is meant to be a cult nightmare for everyone except the girl, for her it becomes a fairytale where she is freed from all her toxic relationships and anxiety and despair. She just falls into this community, for better or worse.

As crazy as all of the rituals are, its all based on real stuff, people used to do these things.
What you think of Midsommar... yay or nay?
You're pronouncing it correctly. Ari Aster himself pronounces that way, so I would say that's the proper way to say it.
I guess one day yeah I'll watch it again
Yay.
I didn't watch you reaction cuz I've been putting this flick off, i know its gunna mind fuck me lol just wanted to give ya a like👍..what do you like more this or hereditary?
Yayyyyyyyyyyyy
The women were screaming with Dani to sympathize with her pain, which has never been done for her before. The Horga are the 'family' Dani has needed all her life.
they manipulated her to feel that way.
That was literally love-bombing, a practice cults utilize all the time.
That was my takeaway too. She had never had anyone who was there for her before and found it with the Swedish hippies
@@Drforrester31 She didn't though, it was all an act to lure her in.
True, they lured her in and it worked on her because she always was the odd one out. With her family, her friends and even her boyfriend didn't want her anymore. Being taken into the cult (more or less brainwashed, but still) she finally felt like she had a place she belonged and that's why she smiled at the end
Fun facts in Scandinavia midsommer is a real thing BUT they don’t jump off of cliffs they don’t do drugs you can leave
when my friend watched this movie they texted me "i just started watching it and my favorite character so far is pelle" and like an hour and a half later they just followed it up with a message saying "nvm☠"
midsommar is a fever dream while tripping on acid with swedish folklore, and hereditary is the aftermath of the the trip with supernatural worshipping.
My dad laughed at me when I said I wanted to see Midsommar and he thought it was a chick flick.
Then I saw it.
This is definitely not that.
Did you see it with your dad?
😱
Did he like it?

PLEASE do knives out next, it’s an incredible who-dunnit with a great twist.

I love that movie!! It confused me a bit but I really enjoyed it!

I loved knives out!
The guy with the lungs out got "blood eagled" an old Viking practice
Yeah but this practice never existed it was Christian propaganda to « demonize » the vikings
You're so brave for going from Hereditary to Midsommar in such a short amount of time lol ! Great video
ikr!! i needed at least a week to process hereditary and i just watched midsommar tonight & i honestly feel sick after watching that..
I had to watch them two months apart!
Brave? It’s not like they’re particularly scarr movies. Especially Midsommar.

Ari Aster made this short film THE STRANGE THING ABOUT THE JOHNSONS... same energy.
Is that the one where the son becomes infatuated with his dad and basically starts molesting him?
@@Macktastic7 yep
Oh hell no 😱😡
I had no idea Ari Aster made that! I’ve been telling people for years to watch it
I saw this in theaters with a group of friends last summer, and NONE of us knew anything about the movie other than it was about a cult, and it was from A24 😂
Best way to see it!
I love Hereditary and Midsommar. Ari Aster is a cinematic auteur.
Why is she smiling?
That was the moment she slipped into insanity like a warm tub.
The production and costume designs are great, I wish it got nominated. I have seen people cosplay as the main character at conventions.
This movie became an instant pop culture classic!
This film is a masterpiece but it's incredibly disturbing at the same time. Makes one wonder what goes on in Aster's mind when he was planning these films.
I love all of the weird animations on plants and other textures when they're tripping. It actually looks like the stuff you see on LSD.
I watched this at 2AM:
I didn't sleep for the next 72 hours
Figuring all of that out on the first watch is pretty impressive
It's exactly 3 weeks until we celebrate Midsommar here in Sweden 🙂 Everybody is welcome.. drinks are on the house 😏
Oh, is it too late for me to go?☺️
@@Andrea-pr7wo Unfortunately yes 😊 It's at the end of June! You're welcome next year 😎
Midsommar is the most cathartic break up movie I've ever seen.
21:16 the easteregg of her sister's face on the woods... That's so cool.
If you like these "slow descent into madness" movies I have 3 recommendations:
THE WITCH (2015): A24 movie by the same director as "THE LIGHTHOUSE".
EDIT: I've been informed that THE WITCH is on the channel already (and if you didn't like it, that's totally fine, these movies can be polarizing), so I'll toss in a bonus one that I forgot to mention:
ANNIHILATION (2018): I don't know man, this one is a mindfuck.
She's already seen The Witch in a 24 horror marathon. I think she didn't like it tho
Suspiria was amazing and thom Yorke’s soundtrack was spectacular.
@@frankoceanstanaccount7126 I wasn't aware, thank you
Yes to Annihilation!
"why there's a big bear?"
Me: oh you'll see. ;)
"Pell" is an American way of saying that name. "Pelle" is the right way, the way us swedes pronounce the (Swedish) name.
Pelle means skin in Italian. It's pronunced the same.
If you don't find emotional support with your disconnected boyfriend, find it with a cult. Wait, maybe that's not the healthiest bit of advice... Still, sums up the movie pretty well.
well, she admitted in the beginning, that he was always supporting her. but nobody supported him.
I just want to take this opportunity to invite anyone to join in on our Midsommar celebration 😁😂
Greetings from Sweden!
I’m traumatized forever sooo no
"You cant ditch her now bro" . I subbed for the pure reactions and ugly cries. Love the content! lol
A movie Id love to see your reaction to is Hush. About a deaf woman that has to defend herself against a home invader that’s trying to murder her
Ari Aster said that most of the characters are trapped in a horror film, but the main character, Dani, is living in a twisted fairy tale.
Ugh i'm so excited about Ari Ester's career.I can feel his cult obsession over here
Yay! Now that you watched both this and Hereditary, did you notice that they are both essentially ascension arcs for Dani (Midsommar) and Peter (Hereditary) ending in a crowning? Very deranged and messed up ascension arcs, but ascension arcs none the less.
That ending is just soooo..... perfect. Just such an unreal eerie buildup the WHOLE time, with a single hint of happiness at the end.
She's laughing mad, not happy. And that's according to Florence Pugh.
It's indoctrination. She's literally been indoctrinated into a Cult.
I just love this movie so much, it's one of my favorites and I love seeing people react to it THANK YOU FOR THIS MOMENT

If you pay attention, the forest in the background is also breathing and "tripping"
R.I.P to the people who watched this on a first date
21:15 sister`s face in the trees, holy...
i didnt notice that the first time I watched this movie
RP unfortunately, I have to agree
I know you probably thought this was horrible. But I've been thinking about this movie for so long not being able to sleep because of it. And I haven't even seen it. Seeing your reaction and the fact that you blurred out so much so I didn't have to actually see it answered all my questions about it without needing to have all the awful pictures. (I'm really sensitive too stuff like this) and because of you I've been able to sleep without dreaming of this movie for a week now. So even tho you probably didn't like all the editing and even tho you probably suffered through the movie. Thank you so much, because you really save my good night sleep for the rest of the month and my sanity❤️
Ari Aster said that his next movie is gonna be a 4 hour “nightmare”
Yeah, Beau is afraid. Can't wait!

But today, it´s a clear 10/10 movie for me!
yes, and i never see any reactions to that movie

Yes, I agree with the low budget argument. But every FIVE MINUTES?? Come on, you must be exaggerating. Plus, the awkwardness is kind of the point of the movie, without spoiling too much, please!

In the director's cut, apparently they cut off Christian's limbs so he could better fit inside the bear. And then he was still alive.
Yikes! Happy I didn’t see that!
This is the kind of film you need to watch after you getting out of a toxic relationship.
But as long as it doesn't involve you burning your boyfriend to death with a frickin bear costume.
Ari is a talented director. Damn
I hated the gaslighting here so much. You know what when I saw Dani smiling at the end, deep inside I kinda felt relieved

No. Every one of us ladies has that thought when we see these outfits. Lol

24:30 ah the blood eagle. My friend who’s obsessed with Viking stuff was subtly geeking out during this scene. Even he wasn’t proud of how excited he was
“Are they gonna put a bear on fire?” You have no idea😳
The hung up body at the end is a reference to the Blood Eagle killings/sacrifices that the Vikings did. Good film, just severely fucked up
No movie has gotten to me like this one since I was a kid. I had anxiety all of the way through it. Really put me on edge.
This movie is good, but I think Hereditary is a lot better.
Check out "The Others" with Nichole Kidman. Super good classic ghost story.
that film is amazing, it gives me a lot of "the turn of the screw" vibes
What I love about people who aren't good with horror movies is that they tend to judge the movie based on the actual movie! Most people I know that watched the movie with me love horror and aren't that easily scared, and they judged the movie's length and how annoying the characters were. Like that doesn't matter, it made sense that Dani was emotional and how she felt about Christan and why everyone stayed. It feels like they don't understand the movie as much as I do, which is why I love to see people like you *actually* watch the movie
I loved this movie. It disturbed me and stayed with me for days. But so powerful and gorgeous. And Florence Pugh was amazing!
That one scene which we all know I’m talking about made me hysterically laugh for at least 10 minutes
I know it's been a long time, but thank you so much for blurring out the gore part and things like that
This is crazy, just watched your Hereditary reaction the other day and I was wondering if you'd seen Midsommar LMAO. HAPPY YOU'VE FINALLY SEEN IT!!!

@@skylersilva6135 I agree. Better save the child till after marriage.
And that's alright😂
P.S. you should follow Florence Pugh on Instagram. She's the CUTEST!
😌😍
No it isn't.
