Papi Hokage if your telling the truth that's really fucked up. I can kinda understand why the South after the Civil War built all those statues, so to create the idea of the noble south and that the confederacy was a noble cause, but for Ohio that's just really disgusting and disappointing.

HONESTLY... I see a possible surge in in DJ/producer battles coming back. Not that it's ever left but on a highly popular scale. Timbo and Swizz will be battling later this year... maybe that can spark a chain reaction. We could get battles like Ye vs Pharrell, No ID vs Premier and potentially Flash vs Herc??? Herc was the first to use two copies of the same record but he needle dropped and didn't necessarily do it on beat. Flash built a cueing system that he rigged to his mixer so that he was able to hear the record before it went out to the audience so he could loop the break and keep it going on beat. I'm currently rereading Hip Hop by Steven Hager, the first book on Hip Hop. This was clearly laid out in that book in 1983.
Dj Pete Jones was using 2 copies of the same record. He was djing in the bronx and Manhattan. He's at least a decade older than Herc. He was winning dj awards in in the late 1960s
I'm not from NY or that era and I'm not saying your wrong but I've never read or heard that Pete DJ Jones was using two copies of the same record. That is something that has always been attributed to Herc. Flash talks about getting on to Pete DJ Jones set and being able to pre-cue the record for the first time which inspired him to rig his own cueing setup. If you remember or can point me to information saying that Pete DJ Jones was using two copies of the same record, I would appreciate it. Peace

Actually found an interview that the homie Jayquan did with Pete DJ Jones before he died in which he states that he started using two copies of the same record around 1969. Its all good. There aren't any scholastic levels books or articles that go into depth about the history of hip hop. Its like the blind leading the blind, people have just been repeating the same story that they heard someone else say. The journalist who do theses interviews, and the authors of these articles and hip hop books dont even know what questions to ask. They dont know the history of music in the last 50 years. They never question the authenticity of anything that flash, herc, bam, or krs one, etc. says. Therefore the media has spread a romanticized version of the origins of hip hop. Ill never forget seeing Grandmaster Flash live when he toured Australia. That was a true moment in my life. I get where Flash is coming from, because everyone was experimenting with style and forming their own way. He just wants to confirm that his path was what he considers it as.
Great video. I don't think that was a shot at Bambaataa or an intentional one. Those allegations are too tough and touchy to be around. Promoting anyone who's facing them would be a career suicide if you're a public figure. It's only right to dissociate yourself from the person if you're not family member until they are exonerated and clear if all charges. Hip hop doesn't need to be under the spotlight as "promoting child molesters". Remy put Nicki on blast for it, but Nicki's situation is kind of complex because that's family.

Hip Hop's standard history is phony and commercial. It's impossible to pin point who originated any particular DJ technique since experimentation with turntables was popular among New York DJs in the Disco era(the 1970s) and it wouldn't mean the creation of the Hip Hop genre anyway since people were already rapping in songs before the terms "Rap" or "Hip Hop" were used to describe the music(a somewhat common, but little known fact to most people). I'm not saying New York DJs aren't a part of Hip Hop's history, what I'm saying is they didn't originate the art form. There's no one person or select few that are responsible for Hip Hop's creation and it wasn't something created at a single party. Like Jazz, Blues, Rock & Roll or any form of music that started on the grassroots level; Hip Hop is a COLLECTIVE creation that involved many people over an extended period of time
i think there's a strong difference between rewriting history and acknowledging a person for what they've done but still not glorifying them. you don't have to use the white-out because people tarnish their legacy. you just make sure both are made known. facts are facts. one of the 3 Godfather's of HipHop has some really dark allegations against him right now (which i haven't researched yet to give an opinion on that specifically). as always, love the perspective and conversation! keep killin it and expanding!

Amazing Breakdown this week. It's all a matter of perspective. Cool Hurk, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa will all go to sleep soundly thinking that they all were the original inventors of hip hops early "golden age" and "both sides" in the violence in Charlotteville will go to sleep thinking that they were attacked by the other, when the reality is not down to the individual. I think Justin hit the point home with Terry McAuliffes statement on "Zero property damage" when the reality caught on camera was by far worse. By the way. I just wanna say how shocked I am with the last week. I'm from the UK and I really love the US and its culture and I never though I would ever see that kind of open bigotry paraded as freedom of speech in my life time. We have had many far right demonstrations in the UK through out my life and I am saddened that one of such magnitude as this has happened in US. Love the US. Love Hip Hop. Love TBD!

Not sure why Grandmaster Flash feels the need to go to the nth degree to make sure his legacy is still in place. Any Hip Hop head worth their salt knows that Flash is one of the greatest innovators in DJ history. Heck dude is the first Hip Hop artist to ever be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Flash we good man we ain't never going to forget you.

The debate around who started what in Hip Hop will never go cold. Which reminds me, I watched the Founding Fathers documentary some time ago that credits earlier "disco" DJs like DJ Hollywood, Maboya, Grandmaster Flowers, Pete DJ Jones, Disco KIng Mario, Disco Twins as the true fathers of Hip Hop, although Herc and his kin in the Bronx would say otherwise. Somewhere in the comment section, of that same documentary, someone mentioned Jocko Henderson, crediting Philly as the real birthplace of Rap/Hip Hop. Ultimately, these sort of conflicts will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. It's basically modern scientific community dubs Charles Darwin the father of evolution yet Alfred Russell Wallace also contributed substantially to the same theory right around the same time. Everyone wants their side of the story to be the right one.
I don't know what flash's point is, Kool Hercs style of Dee Jayin is from the Reggae and Dancehall culture in Jamaica, he brought in key components, sound system, emceein (toasting), the soundclash etc.
Small but important nitpick. Rappers delight didn't have a ghost written verse. It had a stolen/ bit verse. Bit so hard that he rapped the real writer's name in it.

Kahn's Hip-Hop Toy Box at the end of the flash video, he alludes that he learned the style from DJs from other genres. Doesn't name anyone specifically. Enough to make you think about hip hop's origins differently. Layers.
The revisionism is having a trinity (Herc, Bambaataa, Flash) when there were other deejays that helped contribute to hip hop during it's inception. Flash took it to another level on the technical aspect but there were deejays that shaped the culture. Kool DJ Dee & Tyrone, DJ Smokey, Disco King Mario, Love Bug Starski, Mean Gene & Cordi-O (and later G.W. Theodore=L Brothers), Brothers Disco (DJ Breakout & DJ Baron)
I think it’s fair to say Flash’s legacy isn’t in any danger... Herc never actually put out a record whereas Flash has scores of singles and albums on wax, not to mention that Flash was the first hip hop artist inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame and is an actual main character on the Get Down where herc barely gets a name drop.
Love the segway into politics. Wonderful piece man! ANd yeah... even though the allegations against Bambata are terrible, GMF should compartmentalize and give him his just due as a fellow pioneer in HipHop.
Low-key RIP to Bambaataa. I saw him DJ before the allegations for the 206Zulu 10th Anniversary Jam, along with also legendary status Dj Qbert. In my head, his legacy has like an asterisk. I think if somebody does delve into Hip Hop History, they will learn the name but they should have the context that we don't really talk about him anymore. That being said, Kool Herc was the first to extend a break and GMFlash was the first to touch a record, essentially creating Turntablism. If can categorize it like that then both Pioneers get a claim to be first at something.
Folks don't know about herc because as he was the founder Flash took it and became more famous and popular than all the DJs for at least 3 years then there was GW Theodore Who was in a class by himself as was Jazzy J Who is a Legend in his own Right. Charlie Chase who made near no Mistakes and stayed on Beat. Etc. As much as you may not want to admit Flash was the Top DJ and icon to many a D.J.
Flash is obviously legendary; he progressed early hip-hop into new tangents. But Herc is the George Washington of hip-hop. He was the first, never claimed to be the best, but he was the 'big bang' of hip-hop.

Here's my problem. Mike Wayne TV has been doing videos about OUR side of town, Bronxdale and Bronx River. Herc had a club our side was in the streets, community centers and school gyms. What music did he play at that party that Herc gave? Never ever heard him say. Flash wasn't a DJ before Kool DJ Dee was and that's Facts. 44 years ago, yeah right.

unfortunately, the spin is a media tool. It is used to make the victims seem guilty and the guilty righteous. In hip-hop, it is used to promote the same agendas by corporate means and that leads to the consumers arguing what is real and what is fake. And in the middle we always hear, it's JUST music.

Tbh can herc even be credited with starting hip hop because he had even admitted that a lot of what he was doing was basically mimicking the Jamaicans and various techniques from dub music applied to rhythm and blues, and dub itself was influenced by earlier experimental electronic music but applied to the sounds of reggae rather than miscellaneous sounds. I guess it comes to whether you view it as influencing or just straight copying

Listen extending the beat was not invented BY ONE GUY people where already doing this with cassete tapes. Back then it was called looping because dudes would loop that one dance beat. Soon after dudes started started rapping over these loops. Soon after 2 mediums where created the beat extension that Flash is credited with and SAMPLING.

Hip Hop's standard history is phony and commercial. It's impossible to pin point who originated any particular DJ technique since experimentation with turntables was popular among New York DJs in the Disco era(the 1970s) and it wouldn't mean the creation of the Hip Hop genre anyway since people were already rapping in songs before the terms "Rap" or "Hip Hop" were used to describe the music(a somewhat common, but little known fact to most people). I'm not saying New York DJs aren't a part of Hip Hop's history, what I'm saying is they didn't originate the art form. There's no one person or select few that are responsible for Hip Hop's creation and it wasn't something created at a single party. Like Jazz, Blues, Rock & Roll or any form of music that started on the grassroots level; Hip Hop is a COLLECTIVE creation that involved many people over an extended period of time
i think there's a strong difference between rewriting history and acknowledging a person for what they've done but still not glorifying them. you don't have to use the white-out because people tarnish their legacy. you just make sure both are made known.
facts are facts. one of the 3 Godfather's of HipHop has some really dark allegations against him right now (which i haven't researched yet to give an opinion on that specifically).

Amazing Breakdown this week. It's all a matter of perspective. Cool Hurk, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa will all go to sleep soundly thinking that they all were the original inventors of hip hops early "golden age" and "both sides" in the violence in Charlotteville will go to sleep thinking that they were attacked by the other, when the reality is not down to the individual. I think Justin hit the point home with Terry McAuliffes statement on "Zero property damage" when the reality caught on camera was by far worse. By the way. I just wanna say how shocked I am with the last week. I'm from the UK and I really love the US and its culture and I never though I would ever see that kind of open bigotry paraded as freedom of speech in my life time. We have had many far right demonstrations in the UK through out my life and I am saddened that one of such magnitude as this has happened in US. Love the US. Love Hip Hop. Love TBD!

Not sure why Grandmaster Flash feels the need to go to the nth degree to make sure his legacy is still in place. Any Hip Hop head worth their salt knows that Flash is one of the greatest innovators in DJ history.

The debate around who started what in Hip Hop will never go cold. Which reminds me, I watched the Founding Fathers documentary some time ago that credits earlier "disco" DJs like DJ Hollywood, Maboya, Grandmaster Flowers, Pete DJ Jones, Disco KIng Mario, Disco Twins as the true fathers of Hip Hop, although Herc and his kin in the Bronx would say otherwise. Somewhere in the comment section, of that same documentary, someone mentioned Jocko Henderson, crediting Philly as the real birthplace of Rap/Hip Hop. Ultimately, these sort of conflicts will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. It's basically modern scientific community dubs Charles Darwin the father of evolution yet Alfred Russell Wallace also contributed substantially to the same theory right around the same time. Everyone wants their side of the story to be the right one.
I don't know what flash's point is, Kool Hercs style of Dee Jayin is from the Reggae and Dancehall culture in Jamaica, he brought in key components, sound system, emceein (toasting), the soundclash etc.
Flash was a electronics engineer and the one who rewired the knobs on a mixer to a cross fader.
Small but important nitpick. Rappers delight didn't have a ghost written verse. It had a stolen/ bit verse. Bit so hard that he rapped the real writer's name in it.

The revisionism is having a trinity (Herc, Bambaataa, Flash) when there were other deejays that helped contribute to hip hop during it's inception. Flash took it to another level on the technical aspect but there were deejays that shaped the culture. Kool DJ Dee & Tyrone, DJ Smokey, Disco King Mario, Love Bug Starski, Mean Gene & Cordi-O (and later G.W. Theodore=L Brothers), Brothers Disco (DJ Breakout & DJ Baron)
I think it’s fair to say Flash’s legacy isn’t in any danger... Herc never actually put out a record whereas Flash has scores of singles and albums on wax, not to mention that Flash was the first hip hop artist inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame and is an actual main character on the Get Down where herc barely gets a name drop.

Low-key RIP to Bambaataa. I saw him DJ before the allegations for the 206Zulu 10th Anniversary Jam, along with also legendary status Dj Qbert. In my head, his legacy has like an asterisk. I think if somebody does delve into Hip Hop History, they will learn the name but they should have the context that we don't really talk about him anymore.
That being said, Kool Herc was the first to extend a break and GMFlash was the first to touch a record, essentially creating Turntablism. If can categorize it like that then both Pioneers get a claim to be first at something.

Folks don't know about herc because as he was the founder Flash took it and became more famous and popular than all the DJs for at least 3 years then there was GW Theodore Who was in a class by himself as was Jazzy J Who is a Legend in his own Right. Charlie Chase who made near no Mistakes and stayed on Beat. Etc.
As much as you may not want to admit Flash was the Top DJ and icon to many a D.J.

Flash is obviously legendary; he progressed early hip-hop into new tangents. But Herc is the George Washington of hip-hop. He was the first, never claimed to be the best, but he was the 'big bang' of hip-hop.

Here's my problem. Mike Wayne TV has been doing videos about OUR side of town, Bronxdale and Bronx River. Herc had a club our side was in the streets, community centers and school gyms. What music did he play at that party that Herc gave? Never ever heard him say. Flash wasn't a DJ before Kool DJ Dee was and that's Facts. 44 years ago, yeah right.

unfortunately, the spin is a media tool. It is used to make the victims seem guilty and the guilty righteous. In hip-hop, it is used to promote the same agendas by corporate means and that leads to the consumers arguing what is real and what is fake. And in the middle we always hear, it's JUST music.

Tbh can herc even be credited with starting hip hop because he had even admitted that a lot of what he was doing was basically mimicking the Jamaicans and various techniques from dub music applied to rhythm and blues, and dub itself was influenced by earlier experimental electronic music but applied to the sounds of reggae rather than miscellaneous sounds. I guess it comes to whether you view it as influencing or just straight copying

Listen extending the beat was not invented BY ONE GUY people where already doing this with cassete tapes. Back then it was called looping because dudes would loop that one dance beat.
Soon after dudes started started rapping over these loops. Soon after 2 mediums where created the beat extension that Flash is credited with and SAMPLING.
