It is so sad how these cases are always term "The abuser against the abused" in court. Here in America, these cases would have been "The State against the abuser" regardless of what case it is, which gives abusers no escape room but face justice. I hope things can change. Soooo...sad

    Here’s what I think:
My first thought was that of disappointment in Debbie and all
    &
Disappointment in some women really and how they don’t help themselves
    But on a second thought yeah, Nigeria is an unsafe country;
Although we believe Debbie was compensated financially; what if she was also threatened??!
There’s no protection in Nigeria so it’s better she’s alive than dead while fighting for justice.
Anyway that’s what I thought of.

I guess in the case of Debby, maybe she is being threatened by Nosa’s family/company.
About that Barr Ekere’s wife, her own I think she wants to retain her Mrs title. There are women that would rather die than loose her Mrs title.
It’s a sad situation when these cases go like this.

The battered woman's matter, being a criminal matter, was a case between the State and the abuser. Hence, by and large, the abused/victim had no right to settle the matter out of court. It's regrettable that the abuser will be released back to society undeterred, increasing his chances of battering another woman.

In other countries, even if she withdraws, it will still go onto courts.
I feel like this young lady was probably bribed or threatened into taking financial payoff

It could be threats to Deborah's life where the mother would be in tears begging her to save her from mourning a child. There is no sound protection program for people in situations like this. They must have told her what if you died in the course of the prolonged court case. That ends everything. The best thing will be to clarify cases that can be withdrawn and that which does not end even when the plaintiff dies. I quite agree with you on your explanation.

Generally speaking one may not really blame women especially wives, girlfriends in such situations because of our society/ culture where women that are single not necessarily by choice are looked down.
I recently had an experience with my nephew beat up his fiancee almost to death while I was out visiting. I reported my nephew to the poliice for possible arrestalthoig he went into hiding. I spent my money and took permission from my place of work to get her treated and looked after her till she was well enough to travel back to her base....
In a few months to my utmost surprise I was informed that they have decided to get married.
Today, the so called wife sees me as an enemy. ???

I know of a harassment and threat to life case. When the perpetrators were apprehended, the lady who was being threatened was too scared to press charges. She was asked to go, that it was now a STATE CASE and it would be charged to court. IT WAS! Hopefully the Governor will hear of this and make sure this error is corrected.

Barrister Neze! These two women need to hear the story of Osi Nachi on repeat and see how their stories are similar. Osi story needs to be played on repeat over and over and over again until these women know at the end of the day, they have one life to live and them and only them will live with the scars, secrets, lies and trauma for the rest of their lives. As for Barrister Ekere and his wife from Akwa Ibom, this is the1st time in my life, I've ever heard of a Nigerian woman from Akwa Ibom State being severely beaten, trounced on, traumatized disgraced, exposed her nakedness and bloody wounds in front of on-going men who did nothing to shield her or the little boys in the neighborhood.. This is so foreign to our state and is not a Normal situation. Lastly, the reason why she may have withdrawn the case, is because she does not believe she cannot go on without him, she does not believe she's educated enough to disentangle herself from the Barrister's identity and lastly if this is all she knows, then she's normalized the trauma. #DevelopmentalPsychologist

I believe Deborah did that cos of incessant begging from the man's family who might have suggested a compensation to withdraw the charges. She shouldn't have done so cos the man really needed to be taught a lesson. This man nearly killed u and did not even feel any remorse until more ppl got involved. This man isn't sorry at all and will now feel untouchable to do worse

The fact is that these women are in most cases threatened by relatives of the men and worst of all is that those threatening them are unknown. They receive phone calls promising to deal with the women by attacking their love ones i.e children, mothers or fathers. They also tell them how they will make their lives miserable. Out of fear, they withdraw the cases against their attackers.

For Deborah and the Barrister's wife, it is family and societal pressure, that is why in developed world, it is always the abuser vs the state, because everyone knows the abused is always under pressure either from family or society, the state can still prosecute these people with or without the abused consent, people has to take responsibility for their actions

I appreciate your update Neze. I agree with everything that you've said with regards to Deborah's case; I think that she may have been coerced by that monster Nosa and/or his family to back away from pursuing the case to it's conclusion. They probably threatened her big time. This is a criminal offence and that poor excuse of a man should be locked up for very long time. The state should have the final say in this matter, not the victim Deborah; Nosa is a loose cannon. With regards to that Barrister Ikere, he should be disbarred immediately. His wife is clearly suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. There are some brute beasts walking around with the veneer of being 'human' when they are actually sadistic psychopaths.

  • @chinyerembaka4255

I think she was able to withdraw the case before it went to court. Also, let's not forget that this is Nigeria where the rich and the highly connected will always have their way over the poor masses. She may have considered her life, family and future - no real security/confidence in our security forces and legal system. It takes someone who is financially stable and independent, well connected with international exposure to pursue a serious case in Nigeria till justice is served. That's what played out in the case of the lady that sued her medical doctor husband for raping their house help. She withstood all the pressure because she has the mental, financial and social capacity to do so. Until the system is rid of corruption and insecurity, we will keep getting this same result.
Well done, Neze, for the great work you are doing.

I am disgusted with the way these cases have been withdrawn. Unfortunately, even in countries where the justice system works, domestic abuse victims tend to withdraw the cases and refuse to take it further. The problem is that men take advantage of this weakness or fear in women and will continue to behave in this way. However, in the West, with the kind of evidence of assault in these cases, the case will go to court.

Thanks, Barrister Neze. The well explained criminal/civil cases.
Also, I think Nigerians should understand the community setback to changing such harmful narrative as domestic violence and violence against the vulnerable. When we seek justice, we help the state and strengthen such human rights structures.

Someone must have threatened her life to withdraw the case alive or pay with her life or life of family members. Nezeville please don't blame her. I understand your effort and that of the human right activist. It's just the way Nigerian system is. It's so sad.

Deborah has no cogent or acceptable reason to opt for what she did. Too bad, quite unfortunate, may God Almighty have mercy.
Yes Queen 👑 Neze, the system here is very bad. The police should have allowed this case to get to the final conclusion in the court. They should have allowed this man to be dealt with to serve as DETERENT to others, to dissuade others from forming the habit.

Deborah said she is not a trouble maker,mr .Nosa cam to apologize and paid a rinsable amount for damages. and Deborah is grateful to God that she survived;;;so why not? I would probably do the same in her shoes as a real Christian, when you know otherwise the case could go on for years in the Nigeria Judiciary system ❤❤❤ Love you Neze

The Christian thing to do is to prevent the same thing happening to others (Love your neighbor as yourself) by pursuing the matter and making sure justice is served.

Yes you said it all Neze I also blame the system. These stories are so sad Neze. In most advanced countries they have help like support groups or shelters provided for them until they are on their feet. In Nigeria no such groups are available. Even if they exist no funding is available. Even family members are scared of the repercussions. Food for thought my people.

Very correct De law, the police should have just charged the matter to court as soon as nosa was arrested. Abi o.... Is she the government? This our system is not working jor.
    God bless you my barrister
