    Genius...thankyou. The penny dropped watching this video. I've been printing my designs on water decal paper and like your first attempt, just couldn't see it. It was frustrating. When I saw you printed in reverse... penny dropped. Now... my logo is two part and quite intricate... having seen how you did this, I now have an idea to paint my headstock in areas...like gold and white where the logo will be. Print the decal in reverse, but print the black background only in black and apply over the top... hopefully this might work to show the logo through. Thankyou for this nugget of knowledge Sir.

    Headstock came out great... And you are right, when you rush things you make mistakes. I messed up drilling my neck mounting screw holes, now I have to fill them and drill them again. I was in a hurry.

    Another thing you can do which will work easier is to use White backing decal waterslide paper. You can print your logo normal without reversing it. Keep the black background as you had it originally. Then when you apply your decal the color will show through properly as it's printed against a white background. I do this when doing black headstocks and white logos or multi color logos. The results you got were very cool and I dig the logo you chose, it works with the shape of the headstock.

      Thanks so much for very interesting information. I didn’t know you can get water slide decal paper with white background. That would have saved me a lot of trouble 😅.

      In My next video I will install the new neck on my sunburst but after that it’s all about my next build. I have all the parts except a humbucker pickup and I’m ready to go… so stay tuned 😉👍🏼

      Thanks so much Jurgen. Ben from Crimson guitars ones said in a video that part of the fun was being able to repair stuff and that stayed with me. It’s fun to overcome obstacles and end up with a great result. But for a moment I was really afraid I wouldn’t be able to do it.😳

    You're lucky having multiple decals to use. Lol. For me, I ONLY have ONE decal to try. Two weeks ago, I just failed my decal (urrrg). Anyway, I'm glad you finally got yours. Right now, I have to find my decal soon. Otherwise, my guitar's going to be sitting in my garage until I find my decal. Lol.

    Nice job, Michael. I have been experimenting with waterslide decals lately as well. What I did that works very well is not too far different than your method. I print my logo backwards with just an outline of the letters. Then I painted the "white space" with gold enamel model paint (Testers). The paint is completely opaque so the black headstock doesn't show through and the gold paint stands out very nice. Going to try silver next which I'm sure work just as well.

      Hi Jay. Sounds good. I thought about using model paint actually… good to know that works… 😃👍🏼

    I don't understand why the decal wasn't visable during the first attempt. It should have worked, no?

  • @D_Morse

    Wow, what a journey; glad to see you got to a finish that you were happy with. For covering/blending the logo, is there some reason you couldn't have gone directly to the clear coat (especially if it was nitro) instead of having to first build up with sanding sealer?

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  2 года назад

      Hi David, I used sanding sealer because it ‘sands’ better and because I had 2 hole cans with it I never got to use…. but it’s made to be easy to sand so I figured why not just use that now that I have so much sanding to do. It worked out but you can use clear also.
      Thanks so much for watching-appreciate it 😉🙏

  • @davidsteinart

    Nice job. What did you use to plug the tuner holes when you were wet sanding?

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  Год назад

      Thanks so much David. I actually didn’t plug the holes. Not when painting and not when wet sanding… but you don’t need a lot of water when wet sanding so it wasn’t a problem.
      😃👍

    You didn't include any details about making the waterslide decal. Any recommendation on the waterslide decal paper, like name brand or otherwise? Did you print this at home on a typical inkjet printer?

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Patrick
      Thanks so much for watching and for your question.
      I didn’t go after a particular brand of water slide paper. I just used what my local hobby shop had. But I recently discovered that you can get paper that is significantly thinner than the paper are used. I’m going to try that the next time. I just printed it on a regular laser printer at my workplace actually. 😉👍

    Hey mate, here's a trick to save you 20 000 layers of clear coat to blend your waterslide decal : spread some clear epoxy resin with a rubber squeegee, two thin layers is enough.

    Sorry, but, buying parts and bolting them together is not the same as actually "making" or building an instrument.

    • @MichaelLagerstedt
      @MichaelLagerstedt  Год назад

      Hi Kennith. Thanks for your great input. No sorry’s… 😉… You are quite right that putting parts together doesn’t make you a master builder of instruments but it can be done in a bad way or in a good way. In the end the result can even be really great, inspiring and fun to play. I think it’s also a great place to start if you want to learn something about actual guitar building.
