I've played this for my grandfather, he is 99 and a veteran of world war 2, he was 16 when the Netherlands was invaded, he told the army he was 18 and started fighting. Few days later the Germans bombed his and mine hometown of Rotterdam. He lost 12 family members that day. When he heard this song he cried like a baby, we've listened to Sabaton for hours after that. He is now A very big fan!

The somme was a battle my great grandfather was in. I never knew him but I can't forget him and the men he fought along side of. Remember the fallen " lest we forget " wear your poppy with pride.

I think you may have missed something here, and unfortunately it's something that just makes this song even sadder. You mention, imagine being a kid and being forced to go to war, referring to conscription, but conscription was for young men aged 18 to 40. This song is about a child aged 16, and so he was too young to fight. Children grew up learning of the glory of battle. Soldiers who sail across the world, take part in easily won battles in wars which lasted only a few months, and who came back with medals and honor. Children under 18 therefore wanted to join the army, to travel across the world, to fight for glory, honor and medals. They lied about their age and were shipped off by generals who didn't know they were not old enough to fight. They say as much in the lyrics. "We all volunteered and we wrote down our names. And we added two years to our ages." And for many of these 16 year olds in 1916, little did they know that, had they waited their turn, waited until they were 18, some of them may have never been old enough to fight as the war ended in 1918.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin Год назад +8

      Yes.
There was this kind of mindset that boys had to go to a war to become men, like previous generations had.
But since the last war British were in machine guns and modern artillery had been invented.
The machine gunners were total wrecks afterwards even if they survived, when thousands of boys marched side by side to the no man's land like they did in 19th century and they had to mow them down watching young men turn into clouds of pink mist.

I think the best thing that Sabaton does is put faces in the soldiers' faces. During history, we learn about the millions of casualties during wars but then move on. We don't really take the time to process this. Sabaton makes you realize that these soldiers were just like any other regular person. They had a job, relatives. They had dreams, hopes. They were a neighbor, a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, or a nephew. They had things they liked and disliked. Also, it puts you in their place. What would you think or how would you react if you had to be at the Somme or Passchendale?

  • @jonathanvince8173

This is so true so many from 16 to 21 sent to fight for no real reason while the leaders are about 100 miles from the fighting pretending they were in the fight while sitting at a desk drinking champagne eating good hot meals. I am British so glad Sabaton did this song their way.

I’d make a hard disagree with this
During WW1 78 British general officers died around half by artillery but about 28% were killed by small arms fire
My great grandad despite being only 19 at wars end said the only officers who went over the top were young boys straight out of school or old Captains and Majors who had been in previously and returned to the colours

The other crazy fact is that because of the sheer size and intensity of the battle the area that the battle of the somme took place at is now called Zone Rouge in France. Not to mention that most people who did manage to return physically sound from armed conflicts don't get to remain mentally sound. Stepping on puddles of blood and human body fragments and witnessing friends being blown to shreds by grenades and bullet storms has a way to erode one's sanity.

Here's the thing, that line "we all volunteered and we wrote down our names and added 2 years to our ages" 16. They weren't drafted, what that line meant was from this perspective, they weren't old enough to join, so they lied about there ages in order to join.
I've gotten into heated arguments with people who said "they were stupid, lying about there ages is what got them killed, they deserved it for making such a stupid decision if they wanted to live they should have stayed home"

There's also a Sabaton History channel on RUclips where their friend historian Indy Neidell talks about the history of the events of each song. Then he brings on a member of the band, usually Joakim or Per to talk about the actual song.

Hi, Just Jen! I have to say something that has been on my mind lately. I have discovered that you have taken a moral stand, protecting innocent children. You are obviously a Patriot, loving your country. GOOD! Many Americans are lost these days. And you are a REAL woman., and proud of it!. And when tears fall like this, it shows that you have empathy. I really like your abaton reactions, just to let you know. So please keep it going. Love your children and partner!. Greetings from a Norwegian patriot!

Nearly 250,000 teenagers would join the call to fight. The motives varied and often overlapped - many were gripped by patriotic fervour, sought escape from grim conditions at home or wanted adventure. Technically the boys had to be 19 to fight but the law did not prevent 14-year-olds and upwards from joining in droves.

My great grandfather fought in Amiens and Chateau Theirry for the 2nd Canadian Army (Quebec) he would come to our house and tell me and my siblings about WW1. Many of his regiment was wiped out. My great grandfather joined the war because he was born in Belgium and his country was invaded. He was a new immigrant to Canada he thought it was his calling. He lived until the he was 94 he never lost his memory and he always told us about the war from an honest perspective.

The open car in the beginning of the video refer to the shot at Sarajevo who started the WW1, the aeroplanes in the sky refers to the russian female bombers called the Nightwitches during the WW2 and so on..
Did you recognize the old members of Motörhead? Lemmy Kilmister wrote this song after he watched a documentary on TV about the first world war.

This song/video strikes close to home. My great-great grandmother gave 5 sons to the American Civil War; only two returned home to Alabama, and one of those was grievously wounded in the charge up Seminary Ridge at Gettysburg. Three did not survive the war. Two of my great-great uncles died in POW camps, one in Ohio, the other in Maryland. My great-grandfather was killed at the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia... His brother watched him die, picked up great-grandfather's sword and carried it with him the rest of the war. My grandfather was five years old when his uncle returned from the war and handed his father's sword to his mother.
There are family stories like this all over America, from families on both sides of the bloodiest war in American history.
