The taller of the three stacks was built about 50 years ago. A friend of mine's father ran the construction of that stack. Although it doesn't seem that long ago, that's still over half of a century. Here are the simple facts: it's a combination of economics and government fiat. Conesville was in the PJM area. Every year they hold an auction for a "capacity payment" for the projected power needs plus a reserve. Stations not picked up in the auction face closure. Every year, gigawatt-class natural gas stations are being built and these are causing the coal plants to be retired. Your local ISO has a "dashboard" that will tell you a lot of information about the status of your local grid.
