I would love to see how these people are doing now, still collecting? It has been 9 and a half years since this documentary was posted (although at one point in the video it says October 2, 2009 - January 4, 2010 so maybe it's been even longer), that is a long time. So many amazing sets have been released since, including ten years of modular buildings. I have noticed that it seems ever since 2017, LEGO has done some big things. There were only so many sets that even broke the 4800 piece count, now they are pumping out new 4000-5000+ piece sets every few months costing anywhere from $300-800. Sets were also not as expensive back then, and the piece counts were larger. The Covid-19 pandemic also seems to have created an influx of new AFOL's and an older generation that rediscovered their childhood once again getting to divulge into so many sets that they once had or have since missed out on. There is also a new wave of influencers because of RUclips and Tiktok, and that LEGO is also becoming more mainstream. I would argue that building LEGO now in 2022 is a statement, because it has now become a luxury, especially with the increased price hike that just took place August 2022. Literally all the adult sets went up in value. All $200 sets overnight were became $250. $300 ----> $350. Even $800 -----> $850.
To build, play and display LEGO today is definitely a treat that is now out of reach of many. Wonderful documentary, and wish everyone well who sees this.
When you turn 100 and can't play legos anymore
I remember watching this documentary many many times when I was 12, 13, 14. I rewatched this again today, and felt a huge sense of nostalgia and gratitude. I'm now 23 and working as a documentary video producer. Thank you for this work!
dude! same here i wathced it all the time growing up
Excellent! I'm 62 and fell in love with Lego after being with my son and grandsons. It's awesome. Yeah, I get strange looks when I tell others that part of my art form is Lego. As a mixed media artist, you have the freedom to spread your wings and fly. Lego is great!
Lego is for everyone and every ages in general.
Yep
Alice Angel well, babies can’t have the small LEGO
well if u do legos when u r old then u r just a nerd
@@ultramag4505 mmm no afols get paid good money and its really cool and they can bond with their kids a bit and everyone has hobbies other then work. They are lucky cause their hobby is their job!
@@ultramag4505 SPOKEN BY A PERSON WITH NO IMAGINATION WHATS WRONG DEPRIVED OF LEGO WHEN U WERE YOUNGER LOL
my grandad used to take me to toys'r'us a few times a year and spoil me with the newest LEGOS. I miss him but I know he's still with me now
TeamLas3r yes he is!
TeamLas3r god bless man he's still with you today hope you're doing well fellow human
He is
When Ever I go to a store to buy lego, I just go straight there and I don't care what others think, I go and buy my lego Star wars like a normal thing, I even carried sets around walmart. and I am 18 years old btw
Same.
How about now
@@nikapls hes probably 24 now since that comment was 6 y ew are ago
18 is a KID.
NormalStyleCrew damn you’re a badass
I'm 19 and I live by myself in a rented room. So I have no space to display any large lego sets. However, I do buy spend a portion of my money every month on lego sets I really love and then store them in my closet :) My excuse for this addiction? I didn't get enough of them when I was younger.
+ARVIN i am 23 and i am in constant need of shelf space to display my new sets. my excuse for this addiction? well without getting too personal i suffer from clinical depression and i find building lego sets is a fun and effective way to relive stress/depression and gives you a sense of accomplishment every time you look at your biggest sets.
you just have to make sure you display them in a safe area because nothing gets you more depressed then watching in horror as you knock the shelf your set is on and it comes crashing down in slow motion as opera music plays in the background.
+A Parrot I'm exactly like you my friend. I suffer from depression too. Lego collecting offers me a sense of stability just like coin collecting. Also like you said, displaying the sets gives you a sense of satisfaction that can offer me a sense of normality :)
ARVIN plus they are really really cool looking xD
+A Parrot Same for me actually. Lego was the toy of choice as a kid and is one of just a few good memories of my childhood so the positive association is set. To me Lego = Happy. So weather it is Lego photography, Lego video games or actual brick building it fills me with a sense of childlike excitement and happiness the perfect antidote to the blues. The bricks work well with the adult brain as well as it is limitless, creative or structured, technical or simple it's wonderfully addictive and just begs for the limits to be pushed. Plus you need adult money to give it a proper go:)
You don't need an excuse, and it is not an addiction, it is a passion. :)
For me its a perfect prototyping tool, an cheaper and faster alternative to 3D printing.
Especially the technics hinges and parts. As an adult I think we like to buy the parts we need. There is no specific set that satisfies the demand of technics.
When I was a kid, I always attempted to create transforming lego based on transformers my parents could not afford. I love the challenge and solving the hinges and slides with only the limited technics parts I got.
That boy good!
Lego is for all ages! Its so much fun and its really creative
Damn! at 13:50 , to think after 35 years, that would stop happening, I get so piss when a piece drops and shatters, I feel your pain!!
My heart sank when that happened.
I like how one of the guys has such a good attitude about how people might look at him. I know I wish I didn't care as much of what people think of me or my hobbies.
Anyone who judges anybody for buying lego at any age has never had a proper child hood
The charm of LEGO for me is the storytelling, like when you play with LEGO it gets WILD I personally go nuts with it
Everytime I watch this it blows my mind! These guys are master builders
Lol I had a mega bloks add before this video
Lucas Smit That must have created AFOL feelings inside of you. So sad. :(
Seems to me the hobby is held back mostly by the Lego company itself. Why doesn't someone come up with an open-source Lego analog with freely available bricks ? They could call it, I dunno 'Freego' or something. But would the Lego skillset translate easily over to Freego ? That is the question. Extensive cross-platform retraining might be required. There might be quite a steep learning curve. And just when you become proficient at Freego, boom ! Along comes LAOS (Lego Analog-Open Source) that some are calling the Apple OS of Lego analog platforms. And a bitter 3-way rivalry begins.
Actually I think your implied comparison of Lego to an operating system is invalid. Lego is not an operating system, it's more like a standard. What we need are RFPs from ISO or ASME.
yea I was thinking lego should come out with a hardware store or section in the lego stores. like where there are drawers upon drawers of individual pieces. also this way they can sell a brick for like 3-5 cents. or make it like the pick a brick wall where you get a cup for x amount of $. or sell by pound, but yeah lego should get a hardware store going. that would bring a whole new wave of customers!
It's called bricklink, and other sites specifically just for that whole concept already. Been around for years.
This has to be my favorite video on youtube
you guys are awesome literally the nicest people i've met are afol's I dunno what it is the acceptance of your inner child keeps your heart warm I suppose
When a friend asked me to build a LEGO display model,I started bricking it!
Coming back to this video rn juss gave me the hardest flashbacks.. 10 yrs later I went from being a child to now an Afol myself 😩
I do believe it's pronounced a-fol, not pronounced aw-ful. I've heard the term many times and have never heard it pronounced that way🤔
I love seeing people with countless fantastic, custom MOCS and they think little to nothing of it. That is a true artist
Great documentary. I am currently a TFOL and I am hoping to stay in LEGO and eventually become an AFOL.
18:41 Somthing tells me this guy REALLY liked the Insectoids theme when he was a kid. And that's not an insult, spaceships and robots that look like bugs are awesome.
Says he’s a fan of Lego
Called them Lego’s. LEYGOES!! Americans butcher the English language
@NormalStyleCrew Lego is plural in itself. Like Deer. One Deer, many Deer.
And really, permanent disability over the pronunciation of a word. Or is it because he said that American's butcher English? Either way buddy, you calm down damn.
Im a 29 YO engineer and I have no lego but i'd like to start collecting some technic lego, some of them have small motors controllers wich is cool. I'm a bit ashamed that I look at this, anyone find this childish and immature?
No not at all. Lego is made for everybody. Doesnt matter how old u r as long as you're not harming others
I share your hobby, I have a loft full of LEGO, greetings from Norway.
why not alf? adult lego fan?
CrashMan27 why not KFOL(kid fan of lego)?
I like it. Alf is probably copyrighted from that weird alien puppet kids show from the 90's though.
@Gripen Draken Congratufuckinglations bruh
At least it's not A-hole (Adult's Home Of Lego Enthusiasts)
18:38 sonic screwdriver epic
For real tho, no matter who you are. How popular, mature or successful you think you are. Sitting down for 5 minutes and finishing that tiny house will always be more important....
TFOL going AFOL, with no shame at all.
So agree with the collections thing it's so good
BWAHAHAHA I got to the "flickr" part and laughed my butt off. "its a great tool for AFOLs"...so it used to be. XD
lego is for all ages. FACT.
"it became something i have to rebuild" hahah
Money is the primary inhibitor.
No. Adults should not have fun, all they should do is work and be unhappy. Fun is not allowed from 18 and beyond.
For me, I recently joined a lego club, in New Mexico called NMLUG New Mexico Lego User Group which is part of AFOL I think.
Nice! I am in Santa Fe!
Lol i remember when I went to brickcon 4 the first time
Same
Awesome doc!
14:40 BIONICLE
35 and still loving Lego.
Like anything in life, Lego is for anyone who wants to do it. It's no different to nuts and bolts that fix our cars and where would the world be without transport?. Mechanics would disappear along with engineers etc and the world would stop altogether. Most jobs would go and look around your home and how it is made up of tiny screws and washers and the like, that go to make up the furniture. The earth is full of tiny pieces that make up bigger pieces but we couldn't live without it. The only ignorance is mans failure to think constructively and spiritually. It's also true that our inner child is still active in all of us but we don't want to admit it. When I get called weird for loving Lego or toys, I just say that I like being weird as we get to have more fun, and fun is what I came to have on planet earth.
I’m not an AFOL however I’m a TFOL (Teen Fan Of Lego)
I like the AFOL Documentary, but deep thumbs down on the Disney commercials.
LEGOFEST prime in Aug 1995 was the first ever LEFO Brickfest, I wish they would have mentioned it
it's like the only thing in life that you can ALWAYS depend on.When litterly everything seems to fail in life ,Lego just doesn't
I don't play with my Legos anymore but for some weird reason it's the only toy I can't seem to part with. Ever.
Corn Fed Didn't you feel the sudden urge to take out your Legos and build something out of them after watching this documentary? Because i did. And i did it.
Hayze Phucked Yes. And I still find myself buying Lego sets from time to time when I stop off at Target.
This is cool!
That music tho! Anyone know the name?
It's said AFOL A-Fol
2:10 awesome !!! sooo many LEGO, give me some bricks ^^
Fantastic Hobbie!!! I allready have a lot of Lego Technic and I will continue to collect it and to bild and bild as much as possible. I fill like all of this guis, doesn't matther how old you are, LEGO never have and never in future can have a age limit. You stop to be child and to be creative from the time that you stop your passion. Greetings to everybody!!!
DAMN IT ALL TO HELL THERE IS NO BRICK-CON FOR ISLAND OF OAHU (HAWAII) one that I am not aware of at the moment... I'm a really big fan of LEGO... if I ever get a chance I want to create A FULL BODY SUIT OF C3-PO or BOBBA FETT and I know just how to do it too I saw a Russian guy do a LEGO arm so I got a rough idea on what to do
GUNVALKERIE lol
Oh, also the nmlug I'm also did a parts draft before
A great alternative to US street gangs ...
Thanks for this documantary i used it for a assignment
Lego is the one toy that truly transcends age!
keep our creative wings alive...^_^
19:35 conference sequence see the creations it's amazing
One of the best Documentaries ever!!!
I love Lego, and absolutely loved this doc. I never knew logos WEREN'T cool? Maybe its my age, but I really didn't know Lego wasn't cool anymore? I wish I still had my logos now!
LEGO was never not cool, ever. It's only in people's heads.
Agreed
Based
Really nice document! Cool!
High Altitude Moth Bomber totally not Venture Bros. ;)
That prey mantis is dope
13:52
27:06 Exactly
those are some sweet mechs!
I have been into LEGO from the age of 9 and now I'm 16, and I'm just wondering how you keep it all so tidy? I mean it's easy if you have one big box full of bricks, but I'm spending the magoraty of my my time just sorting bricks Im not using into there specific compartments. And most of the time I forget and it just gets messier and messier!! so is there an easier way to do this or even strategys to do it?
I've been playing with it since I was 4 no joke
And I'm 11 now
Cool ;)
what kinda builder are you now and what standered would you say your at?
I started with duplo when I was 3 but I started my LEGO city when I was 9 so thats when I really started to become a "fan" of it rather than just another toy.
+The LEGO Press well the hardest Lego set I've ever built was the United Nations headquarters I'd say I'm good at building kinda
Stack ons. They make sorting much easier and keeping bricks separated.
Is that southgate mall
LOVE IT
17:37 epic Tardis
pause at 1:41
Ion think I would ever invest time or money this much in lego but I definitely see the joy that’s most than sum people now
Nerds! Get em!
They are all sad
Why did you even watch this then. You are just a hater, what's sad is you have nothing better to do than make hate comments on a Lego video.
+Hunter Edge I'm 12 I'm saying that because they grown up
+Russell Godding your profile picture is a grown man and if they love to build with Lego then let them, don't hate on them.
+Hunter Edge preach!
You literally have a fucking lego video on your channel
AFOL or a fool ?
grow up
