- now THESE are a work of art in themselves!! Westinghouse modernized by Haughton in the late 1960s early 1970s I assume?? Jimster586 will probably be able to identify these fixtures as he LOVES haughton! Anyway these elevators are definitely a treasure and a "must ride" if ever in the DC area Facebook: / dieselducy

Those elevators originally had an operator when they still had their Westinghouse controls. That one through four thing you see would let the original operator know what floors need the elevator when someone would hit a hall button. The haughton and fixtures were added in the late 1950s
@ChrisGarcia-b4h The original Westinghouse elevators were installed in 1940. The West building of the National Gallery of Art opened in 1941.
I'll ride these in just a few days.
That would be called "Down-Peak", or "Peak-Down"
Beautiful, yet too dark to see well.
That was some beautiful hardwood & fixtures in that car! If you are ever in downtown Cincinnati we have a skyscraper that has Westinghouse elevators that are as pretty as those, in the Carew Tower! My son enjoys all your elevator videos, as well as riding the real thing!
Very NICE!!
I Got to Film Them and Those Elevators Were An Amazing Treat and Those Were Worth Filming
i like those buttons!
Well they might have been modernised but it still looks like they've got the old manual door handles inside from the video it was clearly noticeable.
@ItsMrBigfence i agree. for a two floor they are very nice. it needs to be ADA compliant.
There is only one elevator left in there that is like that. The others got modernized by Otis
So they are all modded
@@DieselDucy As of February of this year, the only one left is the one on the opposite side of the building's east-west underpass
Now is modernized by Kone
So I’ve heard :(
Sadly these may be getting modded soon if they haven't already, as it appears most of the other elevators here have.
They have already been modded by Otis
Is everything gone? Last I heard there was 1 of these & 1 lexan. And was it Otis who did the Innovation?
@@EWPA14 The last time I rode one of those elevators was back in February. I have not rode any Lexans at the museum.
Typically, Otis is responsible for nodding Smithsonian elevators and enjoy using Innovation fixtures
Damn! I wish I saw them when I went to DC! Do they server any more levels besides G and M?
alpalJL Nope.
What are the handles for, originally?
Those handles go back to when those elevators had operators
Westy/Haughton? Sounds weird
Unfortunately all of the elevators here got modernized
Oh no.
@@DieselDucy Yep. No more original elevators here :(
