This is the world's highest hydraulic elevator installation, containing four of the world's largest glass hydraulic elevators. They were built in 2008. The biggest challenge was that they couldn't use ropes (the load would had collapsed the ceiling) and the system installed had to be pleasing to the eye, meaning only one jack ram per car could be used.
3:24 Amazing sound of the 4 motors per cab.
I'm going on a field trip to the Newseum on Oct 17! I can't wait to see this amazing elevator and this amazing place!
I just rode these elevators yesterday and was amazed. They are huge and have epic motors. The one on the very right was out of service for some reason. Btw for those of you who are watching this these are much bigger in person than this video makes you think
The pistons and pits are also ginormous
They are huge!
NOW THAT'S AN OTIS!!!! That is going to be the tallest hydraulic elevator in the world! Epic video Andrew!
I was involved in the design of these elevators. There were several major challenges. They didn't want traction elevators because they didn't want hoist ropes and counterweights to be visible. They required these cars travel at 150 FPM with a travel of 101 feet. While they are not the largest hydraulic elevators, they are very unique in the speed and travel. Check out the article in Elevator World for details on the equipment.
You did an amazing job designing this elevator.
Yeah as a major elevator enthusiast I found the system very impressive I'd imagine there's a lot of challenges in designing this
If you like this you should check out the Sperone Westwater gallery "moving room" elevator as well. When you walk into the building you are standing under the elevator with nothing between you and the elevator.
Bill Swenson Where is this?
Well, if they didn't want this to be traction, why couldn't they just have installed MaxiSpace? MaxiSpace is MRL traction and doesn't require a counterweight and can go up to 500 ft/min and 300 ft.
This is the coolest hydraulic elevator on youtube.
awesome. best video of the best elite. wish i was in that elevator. i know where to go if ever i get the chance to visit washington dc. Long Live Otis
Super cool! And a really cool museum!!!
Wow. That is one behemoth of an elevator!
Great video! These are nice.
Well I really like's to see that my design is working fine!......thanks Custom Cabs...
Now that's...that's pretty awesome!
Fun fact: CEMCOLift provided the pumps and jacks for these. However, CEMCOLift no longer exists, as Otis sold the assets to MEI last year.
Fantastic elevators! I have never seen so much glass. Imagine how much work it takes just to keep all that glass clean on the inside.
This is the U.S. What did you expect?
Hey,
Is there any way you could upload that clip of the machine room? It would be cool to see that clip a little bigger. Thanks!
Wow that's amazing
Epic motor for a dry-powered in-ground hydraulic elevator!
It was amazing
Now that's an amazing elevator.
to me it's very slow and time consuming. The motor to me looks very scary due to the ropes going very fast around the two wheels. That's the thing that freaks me the MOST on hydros. MRL traction doesn't scare me; they're fast, and convenient.
I've been gone for a little over a year ago and my voice has gotten so un-believably deep. I plan on going to D.C. sometime next year. Hopefully, I get a chance to shoot some videos.
I went to the Newseum in 6th grade. I REALLY want to go back there!!!
filmer765 i went this year, i loved it
It sort of reminds me of the glass elevator that ran outside the El Cortez hotel in San Diego.
That is a nice Otis.
Wow I wanna visit that place looks awsome sadly no swifty terminals in dc so Ill fly in from atl or gsp
That motor startup was the best thing I’ve ever heard
That is a gigantic elevator!!!!!!!
Pretty impressive elevators, 4 pumps per elevator is interesting
So what's the limit to these? The length of pole you can truck to the site?
When you showed the machine room it looked like it was traction because it had a pully, but then it sounds like a hydralic.
because hydraulic motors also use traction equipment so that the turbines can pump the oil into the rams. Hydraulic elevator was DUMB for this type of building, should have used MRL traction! They're not too big to be so anwyay.
@@blueauraretriever Even tho I hate Mrls that kinda makes since
Does this beat the Minnesota Skydraukic in Atlanta?
Nice! Did you film at the Washington Convention Center?
Even a company as large as Otis didn't have the resources to build such massive jacks. They gave that job, as well as the job of designing the cars, to CemcoLift (which is now part of Otis). They produced what would be the largest hydraulic jacks ever built, consisting of five individual sections, and requiring specially constructed rigging to put them into place. Each of these rams is 100 feet long when fully extended and can carry up to 50,000 pounds.
Art and Science and Style and Safety - that is the Otis way.
Epic motor
Who's doing separate video
is it just two floors?
wow. usually you see the really cool elevators as traction or roped hydraulic but by the looks of this video, the coolest elevator is inground hydro ;)
Wow!
What editor do you use?
more like a SKYdraulic elevator
A
@nationalelevator we miss you
There is some elevators at this 21 story hotel in Panama City beach, Florida. I think there Otis.
long live otis elevators/lifts
THAT WAS EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell me something, how do u know the difference between a traction elevator, and a Hydraulic one? Thanks, Elton.
Traction uses ropes and pulleys, Hydraulic uses a piston system as seen here.
*****
I now go by the amount of floors in a building, and of course the sound of the hydraulic motors. Thanks nevertheless Andrew.
DieselDucy what's your favorite type of elevator
Took so long for that Otis beep haha. Where are the door sensors?
I got stuck in the middle elevator there in 2010 and had to be rescued by the fire department. No joke, they removed one of the top glass panels and we climbed out
what is the maximum capacity?
Any chance we could see the motor room in a separate video?
Yes :)
***** Thanks a lot man. Been watching your vids.
I can’t believe this place is closing! :(
Elevator Fan well, it closed permanently already.
How old are thees?
i thought the biggest hydraulic you have been on was the one in Atlanta the 14 story one.
There seems to be a lot of space between the floors. The travel distance may be equivalent to 8 or 9 floors. This is a HIGHdraulic elevator if I've ever seen one!
Ontario's Elevators at DoubleTree McAllen also 9 floor machine room HIGHdraulic
Its about 7
A True Highdraulic
This is the 6 or 7 story(s) hydro? Wowww!!!
What series and where they modernized.
Series 2/4 vandal resistant
That place is like 2 market parking garages stacked on top of each other!
Yeah, true. XD
i went to that place
that is HUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGEEEEEEEE!
AWESOME MOTOR SET!
Those elevators should've been MRL traction. For 100 foot travel distance those things are slow. Otherwise they are amazing being glass
Specialty Elevators and UEE's by Technicalboy3000 It sets a record, at least!
stampycatfan01 doesn't matter. Should be 200 ft/min if it has to stay hydraulic. The trip will take half the time and only take 30 seconds!
Specialty Elevators and UEE's by Technicalboy3000 The fastest hydraulic I know of goes only 170 feet per minute.
stampycatfan01 Hydraulic elevators can go 200 you know. 170 is still pretty fast but still considerably slow for this type of setting. 200 will be not too slow not too fast
Washington DC, This Go To FL In Jan 2014
Looks like it goes equivalent of whiskey blue... Only thing it has 4 motors and pumps instead of two and it has double capacity. Why did the place close?
It has 4 pumps. in ground. museum went out of business.
@@DieselDucy Is the elevator still here or is it gone? Did they repurpose the building because if so they might’ve kept this elevator
Do you have any good photos of the power units? This video dosen't really show detail but it's 8 years old so you don't except the same quality.
i do.
It may had been, I don't know for sure.
Directly operated. The jack rams are the largest ever built.
I want to go to the NEWSEUM for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yifei He But unfortunately, it's now CLOSED
Now that's a HIGHdraulic.
You should film the SkyTrain elevators at Dubai Airport. They are so large that they need 2 sets of doors!
I’m Already There Today
Starting from 2020, this museum became the Deadseum.
At 3:25 I didn't know what those 4 whoops were until I read the description lol.
theyr for the motor and plus this is the reason why i do not favor hydraulic elevators, I like traction elevators far better. And 2100 freaking gallons of oil? This museum sorry to say but wasn't that smart. They should have chosen MRL traction elevators, not hydraulic. Also, those things only go 0.5 m/s when the high speed hydros can go 1 m/s. TIME WASTERS!!
It’s the motors
It's a direct acting one, right?
this means the cylinder is really tall.
using a pulley would have only needed a shorter piston.
A HIGH-draulic elevator?
Is this one taller than the one at Whisky Blue?
i am not sure. Whisky blue is roped, these are in ground.
***** well these are far more interesting, i was at this place in 2014, has to be one of the best attractions in the area
UPDATE: Will be closing in January 2020. This is your last chance to get your tickets to ride these glass elevators before then.
Funky Kong John’s Hopkins is Taking Over This and it Will Be Turned Into a School
Jon C I’m Sad They Are Closing These Amazing Place. I Was There Last Week and Those Elevators Were Amazing
I rode this elevator in 2015
That is a really nice elevator I would like to ride it really big u don't have to worry about not having room :) really awsome looking do u have to get permission to ride the elevator?
The way the museum works is you go through security on the first floor, then you take an escalator to the basement/concourse level. Then you ride these up to 6 and work your way down to 1
Does the machine really start three times?
it runs on four machines for just one elevator
This place is closing on 12/31/19 :(

CoVID-19
@@TheDash456 WRONG, SIR! WRONG! THAT IS NOT WHY THE NEWSEUM CLOSED!
How many people can it hold?
The dude that was holding the elevator card said it can hold approximately 70 people.
Take a RUclips video of the freight elevator at SR Plaza in Santa Rosa Santa Rosa ca
If I ever get there
There’s a video of me in that elevator.
2018 video
Elevator race
This museum is now closed :(
It is sad. I loved this elevator!
@@DieselDucy I know how you feel. I never got to ride it 😭!

*C
how much is it for admission?
Ethan from what I remember it was 18 dollars for adults
it's zero now that it's closing
As much as I watch your video's I am still scared of elevators. I only ride them if I have to.
70 people, well you havent beat my record (90 people) :D
What’s a NEWSEUM?
Awesomeenderman 99 it’s a museum on journalism and American history
IT SO HUGE I THINK THAT IT CAN CARRY CARS!!!
Unfortunately, the Newseum closed its doors on December 31st, 2019 :( This property was sold to John Hopkins University :(
????????
????
E P I C WIN
I am afraid if the cable snaps when the elevator is full
Arthur vlogs why are you afraid???
Arthur vlogs what cables
It’s a hydraulic elevator it doesn’t have a cable dumbass
You can hear the motor at 0:43.
stormblade123hsm and at 3:43.
I was in in the Sam car and got stuck for 2 hours
Neat elevators, but they really should have installed traction elevators. They would have been quieter and could have saved energy. Why are they key-carded off anyways? There are only 2 floors to choose from.
They may be only for handicapped or large families or elderly people, ya know?
Yeah, better yet, MRL traction because they are fast, convenient and dont' require over 2000 freaking gallons of oil!
That doesn’t look tall, but it is huge.
Sadly, this amazing museum closed in 2019 due to financial losses, and then Johns Hopkins University started to gut this place in 2021 for their expansion project. So, what happened to these elevators? Will they be used in the renovated building, or were they removed? If they were removed, that would be extremely sad and awful if that happened?
yeah. these were record breaking.
@@DieselDucy Also, are these going to be reused, or are they being decommissioned?
Thanks for posting this elevator. I have a fascination for glass elevators. this elevator would look sweet in a two floor strip club.
Thanks. John
silverado5469 I've seen a glass elevator with no interior walls inside a 4.5 story condo. If you try to touch the exterior glass while it's moving the elevator stops and beeps. Not really a commercial grade elevator, but I could picture strippers riding it like one of those go-go cages :)
Answer required: How come there is 4 pumps to do 1 elevator for 6 floors? #don'tknow
because of the capacity and speed required. Sure they could do this with one pump but it would be VERY slow.
***** 1 minute for a very high hydraulic elevator doesn't sound like such a bad thing, but what if there was a emergency & you had to get to the basement in 30 seconds?
E flat pitch motor.
