    Hey JAY!!! I used to work in a lab, so here is some hopefully useful advice to keep you safe and maybe save you some $$$. TLDR: You can concentrate your isopropyl alcohol, and don't breathe in the fumes.
    If you want to concentrate your lower isopropyl alcohol so it can get to that 98%+ concentrations, you can pour some of your alcohol into a jar and add in lab-grade desiccants (look like tiny stone orbs)into the bottom. This will draw the water to the bottom allow you to draw up the concentrate at the top out. Note: Do not shake the jar afterward, you'll just mix it all back together... trust me, it was a headache when others would do that and it'd take up a couple days before we can use it again for our experiments.
    Additionally; avoid breathing in those fumes! It'll irritate your lungs and cause potential problems. If you need to work in an area like that, use a fan to help push the fumes away from you and your wonderful cameraman, or use a pressurized area to work in like a fume hood to stop you from looking over it and hurting yourself. Each solution you have like that should have a chemical hazard sheet that you should read and have at your work station in case of emergencies... for legal and safety reasons. We want you to make more content safely.
    Love your content and I am not trying to yell at you, just want you to live safely and happily with your family, and this helpful and supportive community. Stay sane and keep smiling.

    Jay, I work in medical manufacturing and we use these exact ultrasonic tubs. You do NOT want to use alcohol directly in the tub, its a massive safety hazard for a number of reasons. (We get training about this shit, seriously)
    Instead, fill the tub with about 3-4 inches of water and then put the alcohol in a hotel pan or plastic bin inside the water. Much safer that way and it also helps control the (explosive) alcohol fumes you are experiencing there.

    PRO TIP: If you put the card in a sealable glass container (even with a plastic lid), you only need to fill the container with alcohol. The cleaner can be filled with demineralised water. The sound (ultrasonics) will pass straight through the glass. If it is like cleaners I’ve used before, the emitters are up the sides of the cleaner, so placing the card sideways will yield a better result. Imagine tiny blasts travelling from the sides to the centre. Keep in mind, you may need to flip the card inside the container as the effectiveness of the cleaning through the plastic lid will be diminished. Also good using solvents in glass jars for car parts!

    Hi Jay, I study engineer and metals and we have these ultrasonic cleaner in our lab that we use, a good way to save alcohol/acetone(we use acetone), is to fill the machine with water and use a smaller container to just hold the thing you wanna clean and the alcohol, the fluid is just to transfer the ultrasonic, so you don't need to actually fill it with alcohol but rather just use mostly water. Also, the machine wont be contaminated and can keep clean cause the smaller container will catch the washed off stuff.

    Jay I have to say, after watching you dip the tip of your finger in the cleaner. Please DO NOT submerge your hands or any body parts inside the ultrasonic cleaner while it's running, unless you want arthritis a lot sooner than you would otherwise. The vibrations in the liquid will destroy the cartilage and stuff inside the joints of your fingers (or any body parts). I work on Medical equipment in hospitals and labs, and ultrasonic cleaners are one of them. This is one of the things they drill into our heads before we ever touch an ultrasonic cleaner.

    Jay, be careful using the heater with solvents. It is a big nono!
    Supposedly combustion can happen. I do it all the time, but keep the temp on the lowest setting. lol
    Protip- use plastic or glass jars for cleaning smaller items. Fill the cleaner with distilled water and only place the solvent in the container with your parts. makes cleanup a breeze.

    Jay if you going to do this alot go to nail supply store. You can get gallons and cheaper if you buy by the case witch is 4 gallons. Also i would recommend hanging it metal and metal contact from the tray sitting on the bottom will cause it to rub on the PCB or board. I use it on hardened metal parts that get scratched.

    Hey jay love your content, you can use way less fluid by filling the cleaner with water, then using a zip lock bag for the card with IPA in it. This was the gross stuff stays in the bag and doesn’t get all over the ultrasonic cleaner.

    For the love of everything that is holy DO NOT follow jayz's advice in a closed or poorly ventilated room and make absolutely sure not to sniff to close to the IPA bath, at that concentration and quantity the vapors can irritate your airways and eyes.

Probably still be a while before you have heated wash tanks, 50C ovens and Vacuum ovens appearing though. I love seeing peoples faces the first time they see us cleaning their very expensive electronic equipment in a hot bath of alkaline. Even after over 20 years of electro-mechanical restoration, the look of raw panic makes me smile.

    Ultra sonic cleaners are awesome. The one i use at work has three tanks that each hold about 30 gallons. The first tank is the cleaning tank with the ultra sonics. The second take is a rinse tank with neutralizers because the chemicals we use in the first tank are a bit harsh. Then the third tank has a rust inhibitor to help keep parts from rusting. Parts with flash rust if you don't use the 2nd and 3rd tank. We can't clean aluminum (and other metals that i can't remember), though. The chemical we use will eat the aluminum.

    Place I used to work at switched to perchloroethylene instead of isopropyl. It's non-flammable, and less volatile. Don't worry about using super pure solvent in the cleaner. As soon as you put the board in the cleaner, all the solvent is now dirty. The only way to clean it properly is to use the super pure solvent as a rinse after you take the board out of the cleaner. We used squirt bottles to do the rinse and you just let it all flow into the cleaner.

    The movement between the basket and PCB can actually result in damage to the PCB. In the failure analysis lab I use 1/4" or 1/8" plastic beads in the bottom of the bath (no basket) to reduce the probability of damage and also reduce the amount of liquid (alcohol) needed.

    Hi Jay
    Put your part in a baggie, full that with the cleaning solution, and then drop that into your Ultrasonic cleaner that has enough just plain water. Stops you having to keep changing your expensive solutions. Stops you wasting the expensive stuff, and you only dirty a small amount at a time. The ultrasonic cleaner also then never needs to be cleaned out

    Having worked at a Mac repair shop we would routinely clean motherboards (mostly laptops) with all sorts of issues (Lots of spills).
    This was our process:
    - Because lots of dirt and grim is WATER soluble you want to clean with solution of DISTILLED water and electronics cleaner designed for ultrasonic cleaning - follow the solution's instruction for temperature - something around 60-70c is typical. Clean for the recommended time, flipping the board once or twice to get rid of air pockets.
    - After the ultrasonic cleaning, submerge the board in a large flat container of alcohol and agitate for about 2 min - This cleans anything that is alcohol soluble off the board (sometimes the gaskets glued to the board too, watch for that) and displaces most of the water.
    - Finally put the cleaned board in a low-warm oven (anything around 100c should work) for about 15min.
    You should have a pretty clean board at that point. :D

    A tip when drying the card after washing with alcohol is to use heat to evaporate the residual liquid from the surfaces. Either if you have enough from the cleaning cycle, just leave it for a minute, preferably on edge so that both surfaces have a chance to evaporate. If there isn't enough residual heat, use a hair dryer. Not too hot, it's not necessary. This will eliminate any chance of jarring the components with the paper towel+hand. Also, it will ensure that any alcohol that is trapped under the components (which was part of the whole idea of submerging in the alco) to dry out properly.

  • @Cruzz999
    @Cruzz999 3 года назад

    I work in a lab, and use ultrasonicatiors on a daily basis. You don't need to fill it with isoprop alcohol. You can just as well fill it with water, which tends to be cheaper, and just submerge a dish with the isoprop and electronics that you wish to clean into the water. Obviously it needs to be floating so that water doesn't enter the dish, but the ultrasonicating power will go straight through the glass or whatever material you choose to have your dish be made out of.
    You could save a significant amount of cleaning agent by doing this. Also, you shouldn't run it dry.

    Generally speaking and a good rule of thumb for day to day general cleaning is for every 10 degrees Celcius increase in the fluid yeilds roughly a 10% increase in cleaning efficiency up to around 65% of the boiling point of the fluid used (different horses for different courses though so bear that in mind as the rule doesn't always apply to specialist cleaning fliuds and fields). With temperature also come evaporation though so you will lose fluid much faster.

  • @GrandHammerFrank
    @GrandHammerFrank 3 года назад

    If you don't want to use as much alcohol, you could put the card into some glass container (haven't used plastic before but it might be fine), cover the card with a decent amount of alcohol so it's gentler on the card. Place that container into the ultrasound bath that's filled with water, just enough to cover the sides but not go into the container, and use it normally. The water just carries the waves to the container with the alcohol and works just as well.
