- When buying off the rack suits some compromises are a must but nothing some free time and a sewing machine can't fix. Doing alterations to slim a side vent suit jacket is attainable for sewers at any level!
This happens to be the exact way I do alterations for clients so there are no steps skipped or shortcuts taken. Whether you're sewing for yourself or others you'll have no problems in this tutorial.

Thank you for this tutorial. I am a suit addict. A few years ago after paying hundreds for tailoring, I started tailoring my own suits. The vents have always been a difficult area for me and finding this is a game changer. I just completed my first try and the results are perfect. Much continued success to you, you've got a new sub.
I'll watch for a few more years to build up the confidence to tackle cutting my suits up 😁
Thanks for your video! Especially appreciate the part about the side vents, which a lot of other videos do not cover.
You are welcome!
@@AspiringGent Follow up question: When would you opt to take in the side seams vs the center seam? Do they have a different effect?
Lol another award winning selection of topic! I know myself, I never would have imagined that it would be possible to even tackle a issue such as a wide cut of a jacket. You always find a way to make a seemingly overwhelming issue be addressed in a simplistic manner. I think your clients are very fortunate to have you as their Taylor.
Ej M I really thank you for such a nice comment! I say it all the time sewing isn’t hard you just need to take it one step at a time!
@@AspiringGent lol yeah, I believe that I remember hearing that similar encouragement from my calculus teacher.... in college!! Lol
I today, won't remember the formulas to save my life!
Great, it is good to see a younger guy, show these tailoring skills .. I subscribed just on this.
TFS loved the straightforward and concise explanation.
terri e happy to hear it!
Thanks for the video, it is very straightforward and concise....I love it, I am in the process of altering a jacket and it is very helpful. I appreciate it very much.
How did it go?
Awesome vid! this is the only video that actually goes through all the steps logically. Thanks!
fmj 556 I want to help bridge that gap for people!
THANK YOU so much for this! I used this to take in a jacket & it came out great! I’ve never attempted this before & it would have been impossible without your video!
Thank you so much , this was very helpful and also confirmed I was doing it correctly. I love your tutorials.
Can you add a video on how to MAKE a LINED SUIT, UNLINED? or Undo /remove the non breathing POLYESTER lining that traps heat?
i spent way too much on tailoring. I just bought 4 new suits for summer so i will try this and save my self a ton of money
THANK YOU!!!!! I'm a new tailor and your videos have been so helpful!!
This is fabulous. Thank you so much - I'm really looking forward to learning more with/from you in the future.

Your videos are great and I 'm learning a lot. I would love for you to show how to create breaks in suit pants and how to hem them while using a blind stitch machine.
Awesome! That was great!
I'll have to do it by hand b/c I don't have a machine
That works just as well!
I love this. I'm currently trying to alter a jacket I got from the thrift store and it's wayyy to big for me but it looks so cute. It's 10 sizes too big and I honestly don't think I was way too optimistic when I bought it. 😅
I’m in the same boat! I hope your project went well!
I've subscribed. Love the way you explained things and showed how easy it is to make a jacket slimmer. Now I'm going to see if you've done a video on making mens trousers a little slimmer around the behind. If you haven't, please would you do that. Thank you. Watched from London UK
Yes there is one in my video!
Yes I do! It’s in my videos!
@@AspiringGent Thank you. I found it and have been watching. You're a star x
Side vents!! That’s how to do it! Thank you
Thanks a ton, I thought this was going to be major surgery but it seems to be easy.
May god bless you bro ♥️♥️♥️and u be the hell of a successful youtuber and tailor 🌟
thanks for making these, they're very helpful.
What a helpful video once more your videos have such good info l look forward to your videos ... keep up the great work and I look forward to new videos in 2020 ... ps I hope you have a Happy Holidays
Raymond F happy holidays to you as well! And thanks 2020 is going to be a great year!
Yes you made it! I remember us talking about this!
Robert Jones I got you! I’m always trying to make the content you all want to see!
Aspiring Gent yeah man I love your channel! I have my own called GentStyle about similar stuff, I’d love to interview you!
Let’s do it!
Excellent work
Question sir: how did you remove the excess lining of the jacket?
In length or width?
Hey sir also, "how to unline a sports jacket" would be a interesting video to see for us that live in Texas or warmer climates
P.s when I say warmer I mean HOT AS HELL 😂
Love your work. From the other side of globe!
I can't imagine making my own clothes, or correcting things I wasn't happy. I think this would be a great talent to have.
You make it look easy, but I'll be honest, I don't think I have patients for such small details.
Greg Taylor it’s not for everyone but now you know what you’re looking to have your tailor do!
@@AspiringGent Thanks for the quick reply. I find the videos relaxing to watch, even if I can't do it. 😄
Greg Taylor 😂
I’m confused… why did you take in the lining twice, at 2:25 and again at 6:20? Didn’t you take care of that already at 2:25?
I,m leaning at 76 year old man And like it I, m doing my own work on my shuit
Thank you for making this video.
Liked your video. The one annoyance was the music playing while you were working was very loud. Anyhow, very informative.
Thank you for the video. I need to get me some thrift suit coats and try it myself.
Let me know how it goes
@@AspiringGent
Definitely need this. Got a suit from Goodwill in a 40R. I am a 36S in the jacket, but a "38S" in pants. The jacket collar hits the back of my head 😋 Thank you.
Can you please do a video on how to slim the sleeves of a suit?
At some point, please do show us how to do the hem by machine. I can do it on a women's jacket, but haven't quite figured out on a mans since the sleeves are set in differently.
Very easy method you have done sir
This is really very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing this video.. 👍👍
I have been sewing for years and now that I have the time I would like to take some tailoring classes. I have made suits but, trying to get back into it takes some time. This helps me a lot. My question is how do several know when to take in the middle seam? As I have seen other tailors say never do this. What do you think and do you teach classes?
I like to to take in the middle seam as a last resort if there is a pattern to the fabric. if the fabric is solid you shouldn't have a problem. And the classes I teach are here on RUclips!
Excellent video, thank you for explaining it so well. One challenge that I have is fitting my very athletic son who has broad shoulders small waist and a big thighs/behind, and of course likes fitted suits. How do I take in the sides without flaring out the vents? His waist is 2" inches take-in on each side but I can only take-in 1 inch on each vent. Could you explain or do a video for athletic fit. Would love to get his suit done for New Years (sorry for the short notice). Look forward to hearing from you on this challenge. Thank you
Great video. Do you have one showing the A -Z of narrowing the shoulders?
Not yet but I should!
Great job!
Thank you for sharing this with us
Thanks for this one too, question: probably silly: When do you take in the back seam vs the side seams?
SparksWillFly I take in the sides 9 out of 10 times. It just easier to get a better fit of the coat. Try and only take in the back seam with a solid pattern coat because if you mess with the patterns on the back seam it’s hard to get them to match again.
Only take on the center if:
You need to take in a lot, so you take it in from the sides and center.
You have extra fabric in the upper back (shoulder blade area) that taking in the side won’t fix.
@@AspiringGent Thanks, that makes sense.
There's no such thing as a foolish question.. that's what separates you from the crowd .. you see , I had this same question. Because of you , my question was answered.
Thank you excellent teaching
This was awesome, THANK YOU!
This is great and helpful video
Thanks you for your help
What do you do when the pockets overlap the side seams?
You would just take in the back seams in that case....
Can you advise on what to do if lower vent is rolling out after making this alternation?
I love your videos 😍

Another question: I have a jacket with a centre vent, I've pinned it and it's going to look much better except the centre vent is now looking a bit weird and open. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you
SparksWillFly when the center vent is open that means it’s too tight in the sides. So you might need to let it out a little. But if it fits how you like it and the vent isn’t too bad then it’s just the cut of the coat and there isn’t much left you can do.
Good job thanks a lot
Nice thanks
Amazimg Work again
Great vid! One question, How would it be to take in an overcoat? Would it be the same, but just on a bigger scale? Also, what interfacing did you use?
Good question! sorry for the late reply but yes it's the same process! I get my interfacing from
wawak!
@@AspiringGent no worries!
Also, i noticed on very high end garments like oxxford suits they use no fusible interfacing and i think they just use muslin or self fabric for what i assume is a "sew in interfacing" just as what i assume garment makers did back then before fusible interfacing was available. This interests me because I would want to prolong the longevity of my garments for as long as possible instead worrying about the fusing messing up with dry cleaning, plus I don't have to go out and buy interfacing along with searching for the specific type :p.
Do you think you would eventually put out a videos how to do alterations this way (e.g. sleeve hemming and taking in sides when interfacing is needed)? I noticed theres literally NOTHING out there about tailoring garments this way.
Good job!
What should I do If the front lower pocket is between the side seam. When I did the alteration the pocket puckered.
Thank you . This is a great video~
Very nice 100%
Many many thanks
@@AspiringGent I am a lawyer and I always wear a suit in my work. I like to be distinguished and elegant always, and I would like you to help me choose the colors of the suits and the tie according to your taste 👏🏻🌸from iraq
Hi,
Would you advise, and would removing the shoulder pads (seersucker jacket) make the jacket less "boxy"?
Jason Ryan if it’s an older jacket with thick shoulder pad yes it will help! I would only advise you do it if you feel comfortable putting it back properly!
How does one let out a suit jacket? Specifically, I found a nice double vented sport coat that mostly fits. However it's still a bit snug around the belly when I button the top button. I may have had one too many helpings of pasta.
Hi could you please show us how we can fit if jacket is lose around chest.Thank you
Any recommendations for a good tailors chalk?
I get the basic stuff from wawak and it’s seem to work fine for me. Make sure it’s wax!
Question sir: can a blind hem presser foot be used to tac the bottom of the jacket once you've taken in the lining?
Thank you
@Aspiring Gent Would you say tapering a suit jacket helps to shorten the jacket if not physically than perhaps to the eye?
How to you taken the lower part of a blazer without modifying the upper back?
How much do you charge for this, I don’t wanna get ripoff my my local tailor
F Meng I charge $30 but it depends on where you live
can you do a tutorial just like this but letting out
i have an old Suit when I was slimmer tho I gain muscle and now my jacket is a size too small, how can I up size it, please help me
Well done. Where you located at?
NewFlyer56k thanks! I’m from Pennsylvania!
@@AspiringGent That's cool to hear. I'm from near Pittsburgh, and honestly, I thought you were probably in Southern California, or NYC.
Greg Taylor I’m in Pittsburgh a good bit of you ever need some help you let me know!
@@AspiringGent 👍
How to size down a jacket sleeve
Question, how many inches can you take in on a jacket from both sides?
Is there a way to make higher armholes?
Got the 1k like...
***You misspelled "slimming" in the title. The way you have it means slime-ing! Just thought I'd let you know.
Will any of these steps change if the jacket in question is knitted
Like do I have to cast off before sewing the ends together once more or just cut away fold and sew
How do I start out making clothes cause I want to make my own custom costume
Find a mentor and apprentice with them.
Is there generally a limit on how much you can take in from each side?
Without getting too involved I would say 2 inches on each side is the max
@@AspiringGent Thanks for the rely, but can I go slightly beyond that, say maybe 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 inches?
Taking in more than the recommended amounts is not a good idea as it can start to distort other areas of the jacket.
How much should tailors charge for this type of alteration?
Low range- $20-40
Mid range - $50 - 70
High range - $80 - 110
Depends on how much the tailor wants to charge you.
Yo more vid please
Right after clicking on this video..my mind: You look like Tom Holland.
😂
👍
It’s not easy as it looks, trust me.have to practice for years.
👏👏👍👍
Why would you want to slime a suit? Sounds gross
haha thanks for catching that!
