- Gankaku is considered an advanced Shotokan kata but is usually studied at the first degree black belt level. It focuses a lot on balance, poise and grace with its dynamic and beautiful movements, and is well-suited to an athletic practitioner. This video explains the key points of the kata.
I feel very fortunate to have access to these videos. It's makes a huge difference in allowing us to learn our katas at our leisure and everything is very well explained. I couldn't be happier with them. Thank you!
Indeed
Knee to the ground.
Oss, Sensei. Thank you for your attention to detail. I'm supposed to test next time and Gankaku is one of my katas. Your explanations are crystal clear and easy to remember. Oss! Jose Fernandez
Really great how you explain the movements! You must Be a very good teacher! Osu.
Thank you very much for all of these wonderful Shotokan videos. I studied Shotokan within a small group for many years and wasn't part of an association. How I was taught the katas was about 90% to 95% the same with small differences here and there. Since I joined a Shotokan association it was requested that I do my kata the way Kanazawa does them. These videos have really helped me get the differences I was missing. Ossu
What an amazing commentary among a library of high caliber instructionals. I've been using these for years. Thanks for making them. Oss!
The man who held the camera is absolutely out ... 👎👎
The best Kata teaching sensi, but at 3.20 to 3:40 the cameraman is totally lost, he/she focused on the hand movement while the more important at that moment is the foot and 180 degree body swing
Thank you so much for this video, but oh my God, if only the camera person would have kept the feet in frame all the time!
Oss - I do have na important question: concerning manji-uke (starting at 1:40), is it Kanazawa's particular interpretation to perform the gedan-barae part coming *externally*, instead of internally?
Because I have always done it the other way... gedan goes down internally and "age uchi" externally...
Many thanks!
I appreciate your personal effort to instruct as well the effort of your school; many thanks sensei paul walker and seishin shotokan karate dōjō.
Excellent instructive material.

I lack balance because of a stroke about 10 years ago. I was told that I could get back into martial arts. Can you help me adapt the kicks/spins without loosing the Bunkai of the Kata. I can spin on my left and throw kicks with my right leg however to pivot/spin on the right leg... it just won’t listen. The right leg is still braced from the Stroke and will likely remain so. Please and thank you Sir.
Lidia Sobieska from Tekken brought me here
Well documented. Very much appreciated, thank you!

This is a crane-based kata, correct? At least that's what I was told when I learned it. Very nice instructional video.

is the NidanTobi Geri 2 kicks or one? Meaning is there a right kick preceding the left kick?
Yes, nidan-geri means two level kick and is done both in Gankaku and Kanku Dai by kicking chudan with the back leg as you jump up and while in the air kick jodan with the front leg. :)
Thank you!!!
thanks
