- Ouuu HOOO. I LOVE THIS WATCH. The Kurono Tokyo Toki. This is my first time EVER seeing a Kurono in the flesh - and man it did NOT disappoint. I'd seen Kurono's all over Instagram and thought they were cool, but after seeing one in the flesh - I AM SOLD. Absolutely beautiful watches, gorgeously finished. I understand why people like these so much!
Kurono is the side project of the Japanese, world renowned Watchmaker Hajime Asaoka. He wanted to make his watches more widely available, which launched the birth of Kurono Tokyo. So it is Asaoka designs, housed inside industrially manufactured cases and Miyota movements.
The Toki is absolutely STUNNING - a coral, salmon pink sunburst dial, applied hour markers, unique hands, just a tastefully done watch. I personally love the 37mm, but I know it isn't for everyone. But if you have medium - smaller wrists, it makes for the perfect dress watch.

This has to be the most elaborate and elegant watch unboxing I've ever seen. Beautiful watch. Wasn't familiar with this brand. You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

Totally agree with the point on legibility. I was lucky enough to get the Toki on issue. Love it. However without glasses on it can be tricky to tell the time at a quick glance.

you will not regret getting a Kurono. I got mine 2 months ago from the secondary market. thankfully from a friend so the mark up was very reasonable.. been wearing it almost every day since.
Beautiful watch! The 90s5 is an awesome timekeeper. I have this movement in my the Vario 1918, and it consistently stays at 0 to 2+ seconds a day!
Was glad I got this. I think it’s the perfect size for a 6.5” wrist. Yes, the value is in the design vs movement, but the same can be said about a lot of watches now with far less character. Nice job as always.

@@BrittPearceWatches I think one should be able to appreciate a watch for both artistic design and mechanical craftsmanship. Sometimes you get one or the other, sometimes both, however, at this price point, it is hard to get this level design without a compromise, and let’s be honest, if someone is buying a Kurono, it isn’t their only watch. They know exactly what they are buying.

I'm with you in that I would wear a dress watch with whatever I'm wearing, which is normally shorts and a t-shirt. If I didn't wear a dress watch simply because I myself wasn't dressed up, it would never see the light of day. I'd rather show off the watch instead of hiding it away. This watch is gorgeous and would be a watch I want to show off.

Great unboxing. I love the salmon dial. I haven't really dressed up since the pandemic and would rock this watch with jeans for sure. I have a Santos Dumont and wear with jeans and a t-shirt all the time

I've managed to buy one myself, late in the 10 minute window though and waited looong to receive it, but it was worth while, love the watch. Abstracting from the numbers of different color variants of Kurono's I like this Toki version best.

I remember the energy in the 10 minutes window the sale for this salmon dial was open! An hour before, people were talking about it on Clubhouse and then people logged out for a while to focus on buying then people came back after to update who was able to buy. 😂 All the way from the Philippines, I could feel the collective suspense of the watchfam with this watch! Some were lucky, some not so lucky.

It's not a salmon dial! If anything, it's a Tuna dial but in-fact is a bird dial apposed to a sushi dial.

I’m fortunate enough to live in Tokyo and I can go and check out a lot of great watches, but somehow haven’t seen any of the クロノ Bunkyo Tokyo pieces in person yet (seen some of their “Chrono”-branded pieces though).
I do kind of wish that some other Japanese brands would try out putting the original Japanese on the dial like this, rather than reverting to the romanized versions. Makes sense from a business perspective to use the English script and fit into the global market, but I feel like the Japanese characters really tie this watch together nicely.
I agree. That's what bothers me most about Grand Seiko. It's almost like they're ashamed of their japanese heritage and try to make the brand look more Western.

Downside as others have said is the price for the movement...but I guess it's just one of those pieces you buy for the brand and aesthetic! 🌸

I appreciate the overall look but I seen 2000$+ kurono with Miyota movements now nothing wrong with miyota infact one of the most robust movement but I think 2k + is a bit too much to pay for miyota , what do you think ?
Watch papi was saying the exact same thing yesterday!!! He said “for +/- 9 seconds a day is a bit much for anything over $500” which is definitely respect! And I agree! I think woth this, you’re largely paying for who designed it!

I'm a fan of the 90xx and the Seiko 6R as well. $1200 is my spending limit for watches with these movements. Make the price. $2200 and put in a Sellita SW200 in it as an option. I guess they wanted all Japanese sourced parts. All 3 movements are eta2824 clones with some with some modern upgrades. I would take the 6R15 as my choice of the three.
It would be easier to digest of they used 6R Seiko movements. For a 2k watches
Once you pointed out the hand legibility issue I realized I was looking at the wrong time. I thought the watch was showing 12:15 but then you said it was 3:00 lol. But I am sort of a dunce so take that with a grain of salt haha

That is a very nice watch. It’s not unreasonable to expect legibility from a watch. When you said it was hard to read when the hands were in the three o’clock position I honestly thought it was twelve fifteen. Over half my watches are dress watches and I rotate through them almost daily and I can’t remember the last time I dressed up to match the watch. As for questions about using a miyota movement it would be nice if the cost of a watch would be centered around the movement and it’s accuracy but frankly that’s rarely the case. If it were we’d all be be wearing very expensive quartz or spring drives. Nice job.

It’s a nice-looking watch in a very wearable size! I’ve decided that I prefer a Miyota, ETA, or Sellita movement for an every-day watch, simply for ease/cost of servicing.

Funny you added the off the cuff comments about the hands… I struggled to figure which hand was which… and the lack of AR undercoating made the distinction that much more difficult… not normally a salmon dial “liker”… however complimentary to the overall design.
Good work and a fresh diversion....The watch looks a whisker 'deco' to me, and a great colour combo. The curious similarity in the lengths of the hands is a bit of a bummer....and I was quick to be confused by it - being able to 'read' a watch is step one in the design process. (Albeit, some of Richard Mille's creations are incomprehensible at a glance....I expect the price tag is more legible).
Right?! I can’t figure out how I feel about the hands! I love the design. I don’t like that it’s a bit illegible. But then again, a dress watch isn’t for telling the time! The point is that you should be having so much fun one shouldn’t even care for the time. ;)
The furoshiki wrap is especially lovely! I mean, the watch is also rather nice. I particularly appreciate the hand shape.
It's not nipicky to note that the hands can be hard to read. The whole point of the thing is to tell the time. My Speedbird/Mk11 has that stubby hour hand that freaks people out, but the watch reads clearly, first time, every time.
Also, you're right: it's perfectly fine as a casual watch.

Love the dial color(s), the hands are a bit strange. The first thing I noticed was how hard to read they are, it takes away the beautiful finishing of the hands imo

Like the original Mings, the allure of the Kuronos are grounded in the aesthetics. I tried four times to bid at 6:00 a.m. without success and have given up. The Miyota movement is a staple of microbrands so it is hard for me to get too excited about these references from the standpoint of horological quality. For a dress piece with Japanese flair, I would much prefer a vintage King Seiko or Lord Marvel even though the dial might not be as luscious.
As you were talking about how great the hands are, I was looking at them and thinking, which one is which? Nothing worse than a watch that you have to concentrate on to tell the time. Recently did a hand replacement on my Vostok for that exact reason. And I've got a Longines chronograph I really love, but the hands sometimes get lost in the subdials and make me sad.
Real men wear pink I would rock this 🔥

Great vid (again!) Gringa Girl. I think if this is actually going to be your dress watch, a 90S5 inside makes a whole lot more sense than a having a high end movement in it. You're probably only going to wear it for maybe a handful of hours at a time - going out for dinner, after work for the enjoyment of it, whatever. Timekeeping accuracy is of no consequence. Had to be third-party, so something Japanese and thin = 90S5. If you put a notional - at retail - $2000 movement inside this $2000 watch and made it $4000 folks would say that's fine, so I have no issue with the price.

Love the packaging, size and overall look. Seems perfectly waerable casually although the dial color is not my favorite, think it would look awsome on your wrist Brittany. Only downside is the price for a Miyota it´s overpriced.

A box within a box within a scarf within a box, with a bunch of polystyrene nuggets (do not eat! and keep away from the dog) that is some packaging. I quite like the aesthetic, the dial and the slim case while minimalist work well although I'm not a huge fan of the salmon shade in this one. I do like the art deco style. @edit Gringa, if the hands are showing 3 o'clock it doesn't matter which hand is what, it's still 3 o'clock unless the hands are wildly out of alignment but I do get your point and it's very valid.

I saw this on another channel. The push is on to build a market for this watch. I appreciate your excitement for it… but it specifically exemplifies the saying “You can paint a turd pink… but it’s still a turd.” It’s a $150 watch being sold for 10x by trying to whip up a market. I really like your channel and your approach to reviews and I realize you are trying to diversify your content a bit. This thing reminds me of art… in that people stand around in a gallery looking at a painting, sipping wine and discussing how sublime it is… while the rest of the world says they would never hang it in their bathroom. (I don’t know why I’m so grumpy today.. I’ve had three cups of coffee. Hrumpf!)
You know! This comment really reminds me of a video I’m working on!! Really comparing watches & art! (Well. It’s more about auction houses, secondary market and “hype” but still its comparable!). So! Art. Over simplified is strokes of paint on a canvas. (Of course there’s more to it! Technique. Intricacy. Creativity. Capturing a moment!). But largely what you end up paying for is WHO painted it. Who’s in?! Whos so hot right now?! Whos endorsed by the gatekeepers. Watches I’d say are quite comparable. It’s a bunch of metal clunked together to tell the time. (Of course there’s more to it! Of course there’s technique, decoration, there’s a difference between an ALS movement and a seagull) but largely you’re paying for WHO made it. A watch is more than a movement! I’d say the niche in this one is WHO designed it, and the quantities made for kurono! 😱❤️ but you know watch papi said a similar thing to you. He said he thought it was a bit pricey for the movement. But I’m like one of the art snobs who gets lost in other things! 😜 I think it’s different, it’s elegant, I care about the MOOD of a watch! How it makes me feel! But that’s because I’m a hippie who’s off with the fairies! 😜😂❤️❤️❤️ worth and value are very different things!

@@BrittPearceWatches Nail on the head Cringa. I know a couple of movers and shakers in the art world. On top of that the art world is awash with dirty money looking to be moved and laundered and auction houses are about as straight as a fiddler's elbow. You're more protected buying a dodgy looking watch(or art) from ebay than from any of the big name auction places. It's decided who's "in" right now, AKA who will we say is essentially an exchangable currency. _Some_ of that goes on in the watch auction world too.

I have one and love it (but have put it on a grey suede strap) - that dial is really magical...and that is why you get one! I don't really get the "$2k is too much for a Miyota crowd" - that isn't what this watch is about at all! It would be incoherent to have Swiss movement in this piece and what you are accessing is the vision of a master designer...basically this is a little piece of art (would you not buy a piece of art because you didn't like the quality of the paint the artist used?)

That unboxing experience is quite nice; very similar to my Nakaya fountain pen. The watch is beautifully designed, but I can't see myself paying over $1000 USD for it. I can buy that movement at $100 for a single unit. Is the rest of the watch worth $1900? Perhaps it's different in person, but I can't see that much expense in the finishing of it.

Valid point but this is the joy of watch collecting, sure an experienced watch maker can probably hack together similar for a fraction of the price. But no doubt this watch at the 2k price point will appeal to some collectors. given that some of Hajime Asaoka private collection auctions for 200k and his bespoke pieces go for 60k.

Patek Aquanaut (I love the Patek box! And the shammy wrapped around it! Great packaging!) 2. This one! Although I didn’t care for some of it…. I was so blown away by the jacquard wrap, it was just so unique. ❤️
