What was meant was that in olden times the King of Ladakh had also used the same route for military expeditions. Therefore the route was well known for human movement. In Himalayas, a name suffixed by 'La' means a mountain pass. I have made a walk on the crest of Himalayan mountain in total darkness. You have to have faith in the one before you; who knows, the next step might take you thousands of feet down. And the howling sub-zero gale force winds try to topple you.

Some were as big as a small state. These princly states were not like ancient Indian kingdoms which were huge, spanning across India. You can read about it in wikipedia to get a general idea. Like there was one princly state named Bhopal which is a current day Bhopal district. But then there were other princly states like Gujarat which are modern day Indian states.

Both Rajasthan and Ladakh were princely provinces. Ladakh was a part of Jammu & Kashmir earlier, which had initially decided to stay independent instead of joining either side. Rajasthan had already merged with India by the time.

Indian economy only really started going post-1991 reforms. And even then it has taken the Indian Army almost 30 years to upgrade some of its equipment. Stop-gap purchases were made for specific operations and needs but widespread adoption of an entirely new product for infantry, for example, primary weapons, combat wear, comms and so on were sporadically purchased. Couple that with the fact that the Indian defence industry was essentially under the govt and had no competition, which led to bad and faulty equipment that could not be purchased. Leading to further delays and sporadic purchases. However some changes have taken place in the last few years. And more and more equipment is being planned to be made in house.
About the bodies I can understand if those were covert operatives, secret agents etc. But they were regular soldiers who had no idea that it was a secret operation. Pakistani army is the worst in the world , they have no respect even for their soldiers. Karma is biting them in the ass at the moment.
When Pakistan faught war with India in the year 1971 and 1999(kargil war) India asked for the gps location of the enemy troops but USA did not give us the location which led to many soilders have died..Now we have our own Navigation system called Navic with 13 satelites looking down on India and providing security..It is considered as the best navigation system with a location accurary of 1 meter....
