WHAT IS ROOF SARKING?
This video answer the question what is sarking. Sarking is pliable laminated membrane, well that’s how Bradford describes anyway.
Look, in reality sarking is nothing more than a sheathing that sits underneath your roof tiles, should there be the event of a break, or a leak. The leak water will run onto the sarking and off into your gutter.
It’s really not that complicated, and it’s not something you need to get caught up on too much. But if you do hear someone say that your sarking has tears, then you may need to replace some of your sarking.
A lot of time we go up to roof and should this sharking be old when it was installed on, it’s a complete opening for any further leaks on the roof, to come down and find that hole and leak into the ceiling space.

We don't have sarking on our roof. It's a straight drop from the tiles to the plasterboard ceiling except where there is insulation. I don't understand how a house built in the 90's can have absolutely nothing under the tile but the ceiling below especially in Qld - land of the massive thunderstorms

Tiled roof homes are still being built today in Qld with no sarking.

Hail damage to tiles will most likely damage the sarking so make sure its fixed
