In this video I share my thoughts on mottling model aircraft with an airbrush, thinning your paint and lowering your air pressure.

Thank you for showing us your mistakes as well as your successes. Most build videos make everything look simple and everything works right the first time. It's nice to hear an accomplished modeler say he does make mistakes.
A quick heads-up for those of us who only brush paint. Mr Color Thinner will not thin Revell Acrylic paint, it actually turns it into a paste!!
Cheers for this. I've just acquired a Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024. I'm minded to try out some mottling on an old kit.
As you say,it's practice, knowing the limits of your airbrush is paramount, looking forward to the 109 😁👍
Thank you for the excellent tutorial! I just started back into airbrushing after a 10 year hiatus. I tried the mottling technique recently, and was getting straight air, then a splash of paint shooting out. Thinned the paint more and dialled back the pressure, and it solved the problem. 👍
Jason - thank you - so well explained.
*Thanks for sharing your experience CSM.*
Nice video here mate, came in & went away learning something, thanks for sharing.
Great video, Jason! I usually just shake my head when some wit or other comes with the "consistency of milk at XX psi" litany. As if all airbrushes, all paints and all compressors are the same. As Phil Flory says, "Listen to your AB"... and with that goes practising and practising and practising. Thanks for the tips!
So true been useing ab professionally for over 30yrs everyone and every paint is different.
Very helpful. Thanks.
Perfect timing - I've been putting off doing mottle camo on a ME-109 for about 4 months now!! Only a cheapo Airfix 1/72 kit but still don't want to ruin my good paint job so far!
yep, me too, I have my RLM colors coming for a Me109 and a Fw190 kit. similar schemes and colors on those 2. good point about the laquer thinner
Great Vid 👍👌🇬🇧
The paint level in your uncapped cup is giving me major anxiety.
But honestly, the basic LT suggestion is a great tip. I have a Ki-43 Oscar build coming up and I definitely need to hone my mottling skills.
Lmao I see what you mean :-)
Thanks!
Is that the Zvezda Ferdinand? Made that recently and found it very enjoyable, especially for the price. A good tip for people as bad with camo as me is to give the whole hull a mist coat post-camo application with the base colour, fades it down nicely and tied into the overall model with a nice worn look.
Nice little vid . I've been having loads of problems with my air brush for the last week 😢.
Filter cup is 100% best airbrushing accessory ever. If you don’t have one, it’ll make a huge difference.
👍👍👍
By the look of your A/B I'm guessing an Ultra w/needle cap push-on with possibly a 0.2mm nozzle? I went that set up for awhile then went 0.15 needle V.2/air cap and 0.15 nozzle which fits Ultra and all good using MRP/Real Color and Tamiya/Mr Color Lacquers for camo and mottling BUT...I treated myself to the Mr Airbrush Custom 0.18 (PS-770) and wow and I mean wow mottling is a breeze (didn't thin MRP) though Mr Color/Real Color mixed 65-70%T to 30-35%P as the trick with MRP is completely shaken so NO pigment at bottom and quickly transfer to A/B. I also use Mr Airbrush PS-270 for just about everything else even mottling though the PS-770 was a game changer. My Ultra now has the 0.4 nozzle fitted for primers (Stynyrez/Alclad Microfiller and Mr Hobby primers in all their different grades and viola no blockages/clogging and lays down beautiful. And paint retarders are helpful too even with levelling thinner though the mix is up to the paints and what you find works best. Yep mottling is a bugger but like everything practice and settings :-)
Interesting vid on really thinning the paint 😃 when mottling. Do you prefer the free hand mottling, or do you also use mottling templates I see some otther builders use when trying to create this broken pattern?
No I wouldn’t use masks myself as it is usually different on every plane but they certainly can be helpful
That dunkelgelb looks spot on, what paint is it? Thanks
Tamiya xf88
@@ChampionScaleModelling I thought it might be! Thanks for the tutorial :)
Have you ever tried a mask for mottling?
