I do remember hearing or reading a little about this film because of the Phantom connection but dismissed it based on its title, it seems unfairly. The title is very schlocky but the beautiful images you've shown and how you describe it make this a film I need to look out for. ~ thank you Ms Weiselberry ~
I haven't watched this version, but I've watched Song at Midnight, the original version, on RUclips. The quality isn't great (I mean, it's a film from the 30s ripped from a DVD and put on RUclips), but the movie is just so good that it's easy to forget how old fashioned it is. I absolutely loved it, and it's probably in my top 5 Phantom films, despite being so different from the original text. I want to watch the 90s remake to see if they reduce some of the issues the original had (some parts dragging, for instance), but if it's anything like the 30s version, I'd highly recommend it.
@@Weiselberry Ah I can't answer that yet! I'm currently on a quest to watch every Phantom movie I can get my hands on, so I don't want to rank until I've seen them all. But I will admit that I do think ALW's Royal Albert Hall version will likely end up still being in my number one spot, since I've yet to see anything that beat it. I have the controversial opinion of not caring hugely for the 1925 version (mostly because of that damn ending), and thinking that the 1943 version is superior, so the 1943 version might end up being on the list, if I don't watch a lot of good adaptations that take it out of the running.
Interesting! I've added this to my Prime Watchlist. I have to ask if you've ever read an older novel by Susan Kay called PHANTOM. It's essentially a rewrite of the original novel with more of an emphasis on the title character's background and personality.
Yes, I think I read it twice. I actually did an oral report on it in high school, droning on and on about it for 20 minutes. My poor classmates! There are parts of it that I like, other parts that I don't.
Umm. Claude rains did a 1943 phantom… of the opera…. Remember it as great fun…. Been cruising through these videos while recovering from minor surgery… very enjoyable…thank you.
You need to checkout "Phantom of the Paradise" great take on the Phantom of the Opera and Faust. (it was ahead of its time / It came out 1 year and half before Rocky Horror Picture Show.) All the music was done by Paul Williams! One of my favorite movies!!!! I enjoy your reviews and if you love "The Prisoner" you need to checkout "Danger Man." Ian Fleming wanted "Patrick McGoohan" to play the Original James Bond, but he declined. Also the song "Secret Agent Man" was written for the TV show (Danger Man). Keep up the good work....
It's been on my watchlist for quite a while. Just need to get around to it already! We've been watching episodes of Danger Man this month; I'm really enjoying it. :)
never knew there was a Chinese version, but I wasn't a phan of the original Phantom play(bad word play there, sorry)....so, not like I was intentionally looking for it. cool to know, thanks, Jerome! Kinda like how there's a Japanese version of Spider Man...no, I'm not joking! (this is hilarious to watch tho)
UPDATE: I did a mini review of Song at Midnight (1937). Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/k65lK2NE1q8/видео.html

It's currently on Amazon Prime, and I'm hoping to watch and review it soon!
By the way, if you don't mind my asking, what are the other four in your top 5? :)

truth about Charlie is another great Audrey Hepburn. Maybe you might like them, both Suspenseful and fun,
Wanted to suggest a movie it has Audrey Hepburn wait til dark.
That's a great one! I talked about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/iLjz5m9zqoc/видео.html
Looks like an interesting movie.
Interesting. Have you seen "Phantom of the Paradise" yet?
Not yet. At least, not the whole thing.
@@Weiselberry I guess you hated it. Definitely not for everyone.
@@chetthebee1322 No, I just haven't gotten a chance to see the whole thing.
@@Weiselberry Its like a mix of Phantom, Rocky Horror, Tommy and Buck Rogers lol
The Mr Vampire movies from China have a bit of a cult following.
