    As a Finn, i can say what that means. "SA" Suomen armeija, translatest to, Finnish Army. "Suojautumisohje" instruction how to protect...

    The “shoulder” strap is meant for a waist band and the secondary strap is for a leg strap to secure it

    A crude translation of the cover of the instructions in the bag:
    Read this instruction!
    It may safe your life!
    Protective measures
    •Protective mask •Nuclear protection
    •Gas protection •Combustion protection
    Common instructions
    •Keep your protective mask clean and maintained
    •Always keep your canteen full of clean water
    •Be prepared to protect yourself from the effects of weapons of mass destruction
    •Keep your patience - stay calm - act quick
    •When acting correctly you will maintain your combat effectiveness
    Keep the instruction in a pocket of the protective mask bag (gas mask bag)

    I have a finnish gas mask bag, and a east german mess kit, m52 french mess kit, a russian vdv canteen mess kit, and two pocket stoves for cooking in the woods. i walk 7 to 10 miles in the woods, and cook lunch. the finnish gas mask bag is like yours.
    your videos are great, I lost 15 LBS. from walking .and i have 6 to 10 more things in my bag, the bag is great for long day walks in the woods. and thank you for your videos.

    From my experience of military service, I guess that big one 'cloth' is for cleaning lens of gas mask. it may keep vapor from blocking the sight of user.

  • @WilliamsKnifeLife

    Great review John. I think the blue bag is an anti-fogging impregnated cloth to keep the eyepieces from fogging up during use. My US GI gas mask bag came with a little round cylinder that says "Anti-Dim cloth for gas mask use". The instructions go on to say to apply it to the inside of the eyepieces after each use. I think it came from my 1952 gas mask M9A1.

    Great video, on the coffee search im sure you've found it by now, but if not you should try them roast and ground coffee bags, they dont taste like instant becos they aint, they proper roast and ground coffee in little bags like the same way you would brew tea, perfect for an uncomphemrised cuppa on the trail

    I usually hate instant coffee, but I found I like Taster's Choice. The trick, for me, is taking along coconut flavored creamer. But I can drink it straight.
    I usually make cowboy coffee, though, whether in a pot, or just in a cup. I don't find grounds to be a problem, even when I make cowboy coffee in my canteen cup, and it sure tastes good.

      Yes sometimes. I usually just spray my shoes and pants with 40% deet spray and that works most of the time. Keeping out of tall grass and weeds seems to help too. I still get one or two sometimes. Its just part of being in the woods for me. I'm glad you liked the video and thank you for your comment!

    So is this bag larger than the Czech bread bag in one of your other videos?

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  3 года назад +2

      This bag is bigger than the Czech bag. It has one large compartment which holds a lot. I use it when I need to carry bulky things like when I hike in somewhere to bass fish from the shore. It carries all my bags of plastic worms, terminal tackle, lures, all my fishing accessories and even some snacks and some bottled waters. But the Czech bag which I use most, has lots of pockets to organize your small gear for your time in the woods. I have a pockets for fire kit, eating stuff and seasonings, and first aid. The main compartment has a back up esbit stove, gloves, bug repellant, cordage, and head lamp. It still has room to cramp a couple more small things too if needed. It also has a strip of webbing on the outside of the main flap for attaching a canteen kit. Both bags are awesome in my opinion.

    Hello, nice video that got me thinking about buying one for when I go out for day walks! How ever it does lead me to a question. When I was in the Army, we all had to go through gas training with our gas mask. In the U.S. we used tear gas (that was no fun!) but we don’t really know what kind of gas was used over where ever your bag came from. What I would like to know is if you think that it might be a good idea to wash it in the washer, using the easy wash setting before using it?

    agreed, instant coffee is yuck & 1 thing i don't compromise on in the bush is coffee. i do this... boil water, pour the water through a paper filter in a coffee basket borrowed from a 4 cup drip coffee maker. coffee just as good as at home - no compromise. i don't like grounds in my coffee and i don't like instant. i must have coffee. the finn gas mask bag is real nice. sure wouldn't mind to have one myself. thx john - hit liked!

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 лет назад

      I might have to go to the pour over method for hiking trips. I always like to take cold water in my canteen cup and put my grounds in and bring to a boil and then take it off after 1 minute. Then let it settle and pour into my drinking cup. The problem is when hiking is using extra water to clean my canteen cup for boiling water for the upcoming meal. I don't want to carry another metal container so that's why I have put up with instant coffee so long. Pour over method might be the easiest solution for decent coffee and easy clean up. Thanks for watching another one, for your comment and your like!

      well john, hunting, fishing, trapping, skinning, butchering, cooking..... i do it all and may cook it on a stick or just on rocks, but i never thought i needed to go cave-woman, beat on my chest like an ape and drink 2nd rate coffee in the bush to be an outdoors person. doean't make sense. cruddy coffee and me don't get along. the paper filters and the small 4 cup drip coffee maker basket pack inside of a SS cup and then throw spent filters and grounds into the fire. easy as that and zero compromise. each to their own i say, but when i'm out there i enjoy home quality coffee.

    I want to add one of these, the Polish bread bag and an East German bread bag to my collection. But, I'll mod mine more than likely.
    Im always looking for the perfect haversack.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 лет назад +1

      Well, they are two different bags to me. I like that the Finnish bag is made of heavy canvas, has assorted deep and more usable pockets for what I do, and how the main flap fully covers the bag. The Polish bag I have is made of a thinner material that I can see pin holes of light through in places. Also, the flap doesn't overlap and fully cover the bag. Sometimes while carrying it, the flap shifts and there is a gap where water could get in. And finally, the pockets are not as useable for me because some are smaller and shallower for my needs. I do like the looks of the bag and it carries well. When I'm feeling like carrying my Polish stuff, it can't be beat to carry my polish mess kit, canteen, and silverware set along with other stuff. As for the East German one, I have one of those attached to the outside of my E. German combat pack that I keep in my truck as an extension of the pack. It has various food items in it for emergencies. It is made of a thin linen material and doesn't have a shoulder strap. My favorite to carry is the Czech bread bag. Its a little smaller but I usually carry it with a backpack. Its great for smaller stuff that I want quick access to and to organize my cooking stuff. My Czech canteen and a aluminum cup attaches to the outside. Its made of canvas and looks bushcraft cool! If you would like pictures just let me know.
