POLITICAL IQ OF MEETEI PROFESSORS WHO OPPOSED ST: Where has the political IQ of some Meetei professors and their ilk who opposed ST demand tooth and nail gone when the Yelhoumee (original inhabitants) Meetei in eight Assembly Constituencies of Thoubal Kakching and Jiribam districts cannot contest and field candidates during every Lok Sabha election for no fault of theirs? The same has been the political destiny of Meetei living in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts also for the last seventy-five years. Isn't it a rare case of original inhabitants becoming KIRAYADAAR (tenant) Meetei while the immigrants have already become MAKAN MALIK (landlord)? No amount of NRC, ILP and Population Commission can wash away all the wrongdoings committed by some Meetei who opposed ST.
How many Meetei Ojas who opposed Meetei ST know the Census of India in 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1931 recorded Meetei as forest tribes, Hindu tribes and main tribes? Only from the Census in 1951 the Meetei were mistakenly delisted without assigning any reason thereof either to the state government or the general public in gazette notifications. How many of them know the English equivalent of the Manipuri word Yelhoumee written in India's Constitution? If difficult to understand they can read the judgement of the Apex Court dated 5th Jan 2011 on an SLP Crl No 10367 which states, among others, that STs are descendants of the original inhabitants comprising 8% of India's total population whereas the remaining 92% are descendants of immigrants. Where is the Meetei between the two -- original inhabitants or descendants of immigrants? Can any Meetei professors who opposed ST clarity this?How many Meetei Ojas who opposed ST know the farsighted political leaders of Manipur like Rungsung Suisa the first MP from Outer PC, Rishang Keishing the three-time chief minister and RV Mingthing another former minister lovingly asked the Meetei at different times to join the ST bandwagon for many reasons. Rishang Keishing made a last attempt in October 1981 asking Meetei brothers to join the ST club. Like the pot calling the kettle black, some vociferous yet orthodox Meetei elites who always thought of ST as children of a lesser god (hanthaba thak) staged a protest dharna at Keisampat against the move of the then chief minister. The proposal was stillborn then. RV Mingthing joined meetings of Meetei ST demand committee till his last supporting the cause.
Later, a group of senior and experienced Meetei citizens took up the cudgel left behind by the above-mentioned visionary politicians. They were Prof Mahendra, Lt-Col (R) RK Rajendra, Lt-Col (R) Laishram Lokendra, SSP (R) Potsangbam Sonamani, Yumnam Dhiraj, Director (R) of Industries; RK Nimai, IAS (R); Dr Ratankumar, HOD (R) of MU; Sapam Bheigya, Superintendent (R) of Manipur State Archaeology; Col (R) Sapam Santi, Khaidem Mani, Acting Chairman (R) MHRC; Yambem Laba, Acting Chairman (R) MHRC and former Secretary of Manipur State Kala Akademy; Ex-NSG Angousana Sharma, Heigrujam Nabashyam of WMC etc among others.
The titular king of Manipur and sitting MP of the Rajya Sabha Leishemba Sanajaoba graced a mega rally held at Konung Lampak supporting the ST demand. He also joined in a sit-in protest held at Thangmeiband supporting the ST demand.
Aren't we paying the price of ignorance and negligence accumulated over the years by becoming refugees (IDPs) today in our State? Aren't we like a group of political prisoners under house arrest confined within a space of 6% of the total unable to cross beyond Awang Sekmai? How many of our Ojas know the Kangpokpi district boundary begins from Langol Cheiraoching and Baruni hills, let alone Koubru and Thangjing? Can there be a shining Manipur with sinking Meetei? Can this be the idea of a resilient and resurgent Manipur?
