Im a fisherman from Texas I just wanted to say you have probably the coolest personality of any of the fishing channels. You are also a channel I will watch with my nephew's because your clean for the family and that is rare. I also find your channel informative and make me want to fish more keep it up my friend you are an inspiration to all young anglers.
I know what you mean. I just got back from a salmon fishing trip, and the assistants on the boat were telling me to take my time reeling in the salmon, and enjoy it like when having sex. Lol. Granted, there were no women on the boat, but still.
Man I rate these old video's so good to see how far you've progressed. After a long day at work in the city I love coming back to these clips - keep going man. You're always welcome in Manchester, UK.
Today is my moms birthday 6/1. She past away from lung cancer last may 23, 2016 Today she would have been 71 .Your videos of all that you shared is a great way to relax and enjoy my moms birthday .. That you Fisherman's life . ⚓
Matt, as a California native myself (though I have lived in Japan since 2005) I love deep sea fishing especially in the Monterrey area and along the central coast; I absolutely love your episodes -- it is my t.v. show of choice in Japan. Keep it up bro. Thank you!!!
i love your videos because you actually seem like a person instead of those other fishing channels which have supreme fishing gear and amazing everything which is really intimidating for someone who can only afford basics you make fishing easier to learn and a lot less intimidating so I feel really happy watching your videos because they're welcome for everyone to learn sea fishing and crabbing which has really helped me start fishing and now I love it I love your vids man. watching from the UK and a 13 year old at that
you don't need expensive gear for surf fishing. I'm about to buy a favorite ol salty reel 5000 series for around $65 u.s dollars and a ande surf competition rod for $67. Thats chump change for you british.
Man, I miss your videos. So glad the old ones are still up! I started fishing a lot more in the last year so it’s fun to rewatch and actually understand what tf you’re talking about 😄 I can’t believe this was your first lingcod! Hope you are staying safe and sane and getting ready to get back out there when we’re all allowed to again.
TJ your a lucky dude Jan has the best personality and is absolutely adorable. Wish you both much success in Alaska. I know you guys are going to kill it.
Walking along the shore of low tide is a very unique feeling. Its like you are in another world. I feel that everyone should experience that at some point in their life.
VERY nice video and fish! Thanks for the video keep it up. I MISS MY KAYAK FISHING DAYS ON THE central coast of California off Big Sur. Those were great adventures. Some of my best days fishing ever for sure!
MATTS?! Dude, its Zach Lim! It is amazing seeing you doing this! I went down the herpetology route, studying reptiles and amphibians, but still fish! I'll email you!!!
I love San Fran. Haven't been in a couple of yrs. last time I was there however the food at the warf was bad and I threw it all away. I guess the weather is what I like most. I even like the fog. I ride over from Vallejo across the bay. I'd like to just go there and fish sometime but I don't know where to go. I'd like to just get on a plane and then rent a car and fish the rocks, man I like that lingcod you caught. I never have caught one. I fish here in so cal at Newport and San Diego once in a while. I like the twilight charters because there are fewer people on the boat. This is my wife's computer so her name is on at the bottom. I like all your videos and have seen them all I bet. I like the simple yet informative way you bring it all together. Also the cooking part always makes me hungry. A guy don't need no damn coating on his fresh fish I have learned that just simple an fried with butter and avacado works for me. Anyway amigo keep those videos rollin. Your friend j.R. Holt yucaipa ca U.S.A.
i dont even fish, haven't fished once all my life. But i watch tons of your videos for the catch and cook in nature. Awesome videos man, great editing as well. Maybe i'll learn how to fish.
Try a bobber and a bobber stopper and slide stopper up main line to the depth you want to fish and you wont be loosing any gear. your depth should be 2 or 3 foot off bottom as fish look up. I suggest 20 pound test line as lings can get huge, and rocks wont tear up your line so much.
Your friend's girlfriend is HILARIOUS, love her reaction and descriptions of that last ugly horny fish. Does she say "he's cute, I'm dumb" @ 10:24 ? She is NOT dumb, she's a crack-up. Mahalo for another fun video Matt, I've visited both places you went this day but never fished them, can't afford the non-resident license so just fish the piers for free. I think that first strange fish @ 7:21 is a immature Kelpfish (Heterostichus rostratus). Congrats on your very first Lingcod, VERY nice! My bro-in-law catches those in SF Bay from party boats I think fishing near Alcatraz. Aloha!
+Ahnko Chee Outdoors aloha! Thanks buddy. That lingcod was so fun. Got me wanting to catch another. I'm trying to scout out a new spot in SF by lands end for lings and cabbies...will post a video if I'm successful!
You should totally do a mussels or clams catch and cook. Those are crazy yummy. Just a stick (1/2 cup) of butter and 1/4 cup or juice of 1 lemon and a little minced garlic to make a sauce is all you need.
awesome video bro, really love your work, the style of your videos, the pace, the shooting, the editing, music, everything is very relaxed and laid back, your channel is now my favorite fishing videos channel. keep up the great work, you give blacktiph and chew on this a run for their money
Lived in SF and Sunnyvale. I moved away to the PNW about 20 years ago and the one thing I REALLY miss about the Bay Area is the terrific fishing: fresh and salt water...... We have good fishing up here to be sure, but the seasons are not as long. Nice vid. I've watched a bunch of your vids and they all bring back pleasant memories. Keep 'em comin'!!!!!
Great video and nice catch. Thanks for posting. Always wondered how the negative tide fishing in Pescadora is like. I usually fish at tidepools around Half Moon Bay area. Question: isn't it dangerous to go fishing during raining day, especially when modern fishing rods are made of carbon fibre, which is an excellent conductor of electricity?
Bro keep these videos coming. Your up to 174k followers last I checked. You might have also convinced me to start surf fishing again...... I mostly hunt w/ a shotgun... ;-)
so cool! congrats on the ling! my bf and i tried catching some in santa cruz from a skiff without much luck (but we did see a great white).maybe we should try shore fishing next time!
Thank you! If you try shore fishing for rock crab A day with calm wind and low swells is always better. Funny because one of the next things I want to do with my friends it to rent a small boat from santa cruz and try our luck out there! Like trading places
give spearfishing a try it's superior to rod and reel fishing and swimming in the ocean (seeing the ocean life and fish swim) is def more fun than just sitting there and waiting. I catch Lingcod all the time and big ones too.
+brad Hamilton I would love to get into spearfishing. My friend has told me all about it. Much more efficient way of getting fish too and it must be a great experience. Going to look into getting some gear soon
+Matts Withans My pops has a 21-ft Bayliner, we normally hit the reef by the green buoy or 3 Rocks, which is right offshore from the hotel. Haven't tried fishing off the jetty just yet.
+Matts Withans if i ever see you at Pillar Point Ill say whats up, maybe you can come out with us for salmon this summer. thanks again for the videos bro.
+Michael Bradshaw Thanks for watching! I'd love to go out on the hunt for salmon. Never caught one before and I'm looking to expand my catch! I'd be down if the invite is there!!
nice filming man well done video nice Ling Cod 2 didn't think you get anything on a lure I expected you to snag on kelp I work in San Francisco right next to the ballpark
I jist cought my first Short horned sculpin/bullhead/scorpion fish etc. I call the the devil fish too haha. He was literally twice the size. Thought I had a legal cab until I saw the eyes 10' down. Took a couple good picks. Wish I put him on the scale and measured him. Got too excited.
That last fish might what folks in Oregon call a "red Irish lord" I think it might be a sculpin species. This would be the very very southern tip of their range from what I know but they can be found all the way to Santa Cruz.
Thank you! Great stuff! Do you do much trout fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains? What about Stanislaus County, middle fork Stanislaus River? AKA Clarks Fork of the Stanislaus River? Just the most beautiful trout ever! Seriously large trout here.
I've been wanting to dive that spot next to that lighthouse for a long time now, but it feels too sharky. Great videos man! Also it looks like we're neighbors, I'm 47th and Rivera
Just saw your vid on the Texsport $13 waders. How do you like your Reddingtons? I'm considering buying a pair for canoeing, fishing in the rivers and the coast. Me too it was funny to hear her accent lmao
@@Schnippen_Schnappen1 I know this comment was 2 years ago but. what the fuck
The fish your lady friend caught is called a kelp fish. They are great eating and have no size limit! :)
12 inches
Thank you, I couldn't figure out what that was, I caught them in Dana point for a bit, then they moved out or something.
Man I rate these old video's so good to see how far you've progressed. After a long day at work in the city I love coming back to these clips - keep going man. You're always welcome in Manchester, UK.
I love fishing so much and I sure do miss it, but watching makes me happy.

HEY! I KNOW YOU! Your that guy who use to fish at big bear.
Kevin miller yeah that's me
this is one of the better quality videos I have ever seen the clarity is great.
Nice to see a dedicated fisherman and ready to go at the crack of dawn.
You were right. The horney fish is called a Bullhead. They do grow larger. Especially in the ocean
I think that devil was a Buffalo Sculpin. Awesome looking fish!
The small fish was a kelp fish or small giant kelp. The last fish was a horned sculpin. Forgive my spelling if it's not 100%accurate
Dude i watch u all the time..its great for easing my ptsd..thanks bro
One day at a time, John.
Sculpins are my all time favorite for fish chowder or fish stew. Excellent eating. Handle with care, very spiny.
I fish in Carmel on the rocks. My first lingcod was 28 inches, my pb lingcod is 42 inches and 47.89 lbs, awesome fight. Great vid👍
Love your stuff dude, you really seem to respect the outdoors.
MATTS?! Dude, its Zach Lim! It is amazing seeing you doing this! I went down the herpetology route, studying reptiles and amphibians, but still fish! I'll email you!!!
Dying with laughter when the girl said “he’s like a little roly poly. Made my day

Great video once again! Love the editing. Gives me hope to catch a ling
+Kristi Barkley Thanks! If you can find a calm rocky shoreline with deep water I think your chances are good!
That small fish that she caught was a small kelp greenling
thats what i thought. people say even the big sea trout taste bad, but they are pretty good
Kristin Southall nope. Longhorn sculpin.
the small fish was a juvinile kelp greenling.
maybe people are confusing fish. the one at 7:22 is definitely a kelp greenling. the one at 9:34 is a sculpin.
but its clearly red
looks like a nice place to fish ive nvr caught a ling before but dying to try it
Nice Video matts!! And Congrats on your first Lingcod🐟
+scorpiontube712 Thanks bro!!
Damn even it is raining, the fish still biting. That is nice.

Not sure if you know, you have never said, but count the wave every 7th one is going to be larger so you can dodge out of the way.
I love too surf fish, it's slow going but the rewards are worth it
Nice one bro way to go. Last year was great for lings for us in HMB hope this year goes good as well
+Michael Bradshaw Nice, whereabouts in hmb, the north jetty? I've heard many people say that's where they get em
+Matts Withans My pops has a 21-ft Bayliner, we normally hit the reef by the green buoy or 3 Rocks, which is right offshore from the hotel. Haven't tried fishing off the jetty just yet.
Gotcha, thanks for the reply!

That last fish might what folks in Oregon call a "red Irish lord" I think it might be a sculpin species. This would be the very very southern tip of their range from what I know but they can be found all the way to Santa Cruz.
Great quality vid, man. Good hunt and good fun.
great job Matt
Those ling cod gills will tear your hands up
Thank you! Great stuff! Do you do much trout fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains? What about Stanislaus County, middle fork Stanislaus River? AKA Clarks Fork of the Stanislaus River? Just the most beautiful trout ever! Seriously large trout here.
That is a nice Lingcod. I went to the same spot a couple times but caught nothing. congratulation.
I speared a ling oh i dont know 14 years ago in monterey. Now i'm headed to fort bragg to catch one on the rod and reel. Wish me luck.
Good luck!!
Nice catch on the Ling. Heard the area is frequent by GWS or so i've been told.
Are you using that swimbait without a weight?
That little fish that she caught looked sort of like some kind of wrasse. Not sure.
more like a goby/blenny than a wrasse
as always great video man! congrats on that beautiful cod. your editing is getting better and better, what to wrangle that log
+Racecarsoup!! Thanks buddy, I'm tryin'!
+Matts Withans uh uh you're succeeding! keep it up man!
Whatever works, yes. Like that phrase.
im from SF too. Been trying my hand at shore fishing lately but not been very successful.
I've been wanting to dive that spot next to that lighthouse for a long time now, but it feels too sharky. Great videos man! Also it looks like we're neighbors, I'm 47th and Rivera
Yes it's a type of coastal rock wrasse
For those of you wondering that fish is the Gremlin Boss from The Spiderwick Chronicles

Thank for all the info & the videos
little one is a tidepool gunnel & smiling fish is a very tasty full grown bullhead
Just saw your vid on the Texsport $13 waders. How do you like your Reddingtons? I'm considering buying a pair for canoeing, fishing in the rivers and the coast. Did you get one with the boots attached? I've just started to research and I'm already overwhelmed. Thanks! Your videos are like my afternoon siesta. ☺
In the beginning that fish is a Sculpin. Im not sure what type because there is so many sculpins and they all look alike!
Matts last time I was at pescadero there were signs saying :contaminated water/no fishing ... any info on these? Is it not okay to eat the fish here?
