    It's crazy how Tommy and Spencer were probably the two who performed the best here, considering they weren't even originally part of the cast. They were just crew who eventually became cast. They're really able to more than keep up with the others who are all actors and comedians.

    • @hazelnutspred3348
      @hazelnutspred3348 5 месяцев назад +73

      Well there’s plenty of the cast wasn’t really hired because of improv. Especially this improv. Not to say that they don’t practice improv, but people like Jackie, Amanda, Chanse, and Angela are more improv/theater actors while the others (the more og members) are more screen actors that also do improv sometimes and are funny.

Noah, Damian, and Shayne also have acting experience before Smosh I think, so the only two who probably had no experience in entertainment outside of maybe being influencers or fitting the vibe is Olivia and Keith (and from older new cast Saige)

    I think one of the things that makes it hard for them to keep these scenes going is that so many of the comments are about them, and it forces them to justify talking about someone else out of the blue. Sometimes it works, but too often it feels out of place and can be hard to recenter from.

    • @hernameispekka_Rebecca

      For sure. The difficulty levels of those comments take some finangling, for sure

  • @drravenreacts4852
    @drravenreacts4852 5 месяцев назад +48

    I agree that introducing a quote/DM/comment etc. with "You know my motto..." or similar prefacing can back the performer into a corner they need to get out of. On the other hand, Smosh's humor is inherently very random, so such moments are very on point for the channel and vibe incredibly well with their audience. It's on brand, if you will. I think it's much more of a conscious choice than one made without thinking of the consequences too much.
    Another example of the audience loving when things fall apart or derail a little are Shayne's many TNTL bits where he'll do an incredibly stupid bit that fails to make the person on the stool laugh. He will then stand there, silently, for a few seconds, before saying something along the lines of "... What am I doing with my life?". That's most often the punchline.
    Your point still stands, though, and is very sound advice for anyone trying to improve their improv!

    • @Zaburino
      @Zaburino 5 месяцев назад +19

      Yeah exactly, I was listening to the critique like "I get why this is good advice, but I want Shane to throw an awkward hand grenade into the scene to see what Ian or Courtney are going to do with it" I guess I hadn't realized their smosh pit stuff had quietly grown more layers of subtle meta-irony or something, the stuff that makes it more like friends goofing around rather than a show for a specific audience.

    • @hernameispekka_Rebecca
      @hernameispekka_Rebecca 5 месяцев назад +15

      I agree with this! Her advice is correct but I think the layer with smosh is that we want them to paint themselves in to a corner or mess up or mess each other up. So I agree with her advice in general, but not always for smosh

      Glad I wasn't the only one getting that sense; like I definitely agree with what she is saying here, but a part of my brain is like "wait, they seem to do that specific phrasing on purpose at times, actually" lol. It indeed feels like they are intentionally backing themselves in a corner, whether it's a conscious decision or not remains to be seen tho lol.
      Especially because it seems like a specific no-no for improv, I get the sense it's an intentional self challenge for them; ngl, it does seem to also be cast members like Courtney and shayne that put themselves in that sort of corner in these sorts of skits, as well. It feels like a pattern, when I think of previous videos when she has pointed that out, actually.
      Lowkey on-brand for shayne to secretly make his life harder, in a way. Lol

I can't not notice it, I've learned a lot from your videos. also, pay attention to Tommys reactions when someone does that in a scene, I think he notices it too cause of how he reacts, like everyone on the couch will be laughing but his body language to me just looks like it might be a pet peeve of his too?
    side note, I love your voice, I actually put on one of your videos in the background once when I was having a panic attack cause theres just something nice and soothing about your voice, and the info and tips you give are just really fun. can't wait to see how your channel will grow, looking forward to more videos 💜

    To summarize your advice:
    1. Don't make the line something that *was said,* just let it be something that *you are now saying;* that way the current context is sufficient without needing to create a new backstory of context to support each line.
    2. Pre-establish characters, but hot-swap those characterizations as the scene decides who they are.
    3. Pay attention to the other players so you can support them, not only your own stuff.
    4. Know when to end the scene.
    5. Try to be clear about what the other players should expect from you (who you're playing, what response you're looking for, etc.)

    44:20 I suspect that they intentionally drag in those sort of moments personally, cuz they do tend towards making these sorts of skits more and more absurd than what you would initially think from them; altho I do definitely agree you can feel they should just end it there, if this were a normal comedy routine going for appealing to a wide general audience, ect, but I just strongly suspect they themselves feel that natural "buttoning" of a segment at times, then feel inclined to keep pushing the bit to it's peak absurdist conclusion.
    In normal practices, i definitely agree that makes the most sense to end there, but given smosh has always tended towards a more absurdist model of joke delivery, I do suspect they intentionally drag in those moments, hoping for a really funny end bit (which in itself can be funny to see them fail miserably with that extra reach lol)
    (aside, but I also suspect that's the intended idea behind those specifically bad improv practices that you will see them occasionally default into, like the "you know my motto" bits; who knows if that is their actual intent when they back themselves into those corners, really, but my vibe sensors are telling me they seem to intentionally lean into those specific practices, quite often actually. It feels like an in-joke among the cast members in some ways, cuz as you have pointed out before, they do seem to like to draw from those specifically bad practices, in spite of them not meshing well in traditional improv. It feels intentional tho, is what I mean to say with all this, either in some sort of unspoken in-joke some of them have... Or maybe just because of the inherent way smosh leans into absurdist extremes in their comedy. Unsure lol.)
    Its also worth noting, but Amanda has mentioned being a part of some sort of "groundlings" thing for many years... Idk, many of the newer cast members should actually be well familiar with the concepts you mention in these videos, based on other work they seem to mention doing previously, in terms of amanda/angela/chanse/arasha at the very least.

      I just saw that haha. I am waiting to watch until I can record a reaction, but love that they did some more pure improv.

    I don't know if you've seen Markiplier's You're Welcome Tour improshow, but I'd love to see you react to it

    Would love for you to react to Shoot From the Hip. A British improv group. They have some amazing long form (which I know you love) stuff. Improvised plays usually lasting 20-25 minutes each.

    Hi, love your reactions, would you be willing to react to "OFFLINETV LEARNS IMPROV ft. Will Neff" by OfflineTV? I think you would enjoy it.

    Markiplier did a similar video called "Whose Line?" if you want to react to another channel. His "change" improv videos are also pretty funny too.

    Honestly the TNTL is just really cringe half the time. I watch it because it’s not raunchy in this day and age which is hard to find, but considering this is their job, it’s not the best lol and I love them all.

    The RUclips comment videos aren’t as good as the TNTLs.

    At the beginning you talk about going to the beginning. And all I thought about was my favourite video of this game was the first one a couple years back where they read their dms and I think it’s great to see how they’ve evolved with performing over the years
    I think it was “we read our creepy dms”

    Can you save the, "You know what I always say" by saying the line again later on, to make that statement truthful

      If it's relevant and works as a standalone callback, absolutely. I'd caution against doing it just for the sake of doing it, if it doesn't fit the scene.
