Best birthday present ever, my girlfriend suprised me with a trip to London and then took me to this concert, seats about 5 rows back from the front. Awesome.
Ye gods,I'm getting old. They're long gone now. I saw them in England c.1960, but when I watch this it doesna seem that long ago. They were very big then. A great musical experience.
John Lewis - what a gentleman. He’s about class, pure class! Connie, OMG!!! Milt what can we say-pure artistry! Percy ohhh Percy-to date no one comes close I just love MJQ🎈👌🏾👏🏾
MILTON "Milt" or "Bags" JACKSON (January 1st, 1923 - October 9th, 1999) was head and shoulders above all the rest of the Modern Jazz vibraharpists. In my estimation, he's still is!!!
Bruce I agree with you, although I appreciate Roy Ayers, Bobby Hutcherson, Gary Burton, Jonny Lytle. Milt was always my favorite, He and Walt Dickerson.
Their classy and elegant style is part of what got jazz accepted as art music. Always suits, presenting composer, arranger and composition title, playing on a stage with taste and elegance. Personally, I love it!
I don't think that is correct. Ellington and his Orchestra where always dressed to the "nines," as my grandma would say. See Lee Morgan for example and his adoption of the prep style. Or Lester Young with his suit and tie and porkpie hat. Jazz musicians ALWAYS seemed to have worn suit and tie, taken their professional appearance into account, with, at times, sartorial distinction specific to time and place.
" MILT JACKSON SINGS " . . . was an album i loved but lost control of it 25 years ago. milt sings all the songs, has a great voice . . . that he very rarely uses, unfortunately. if A N Y O N E out there has it, could you please plug it in or send me a copy ??? much appreciated !!
Milt always sounded as he wanted to get rid of the strictness of John's arrangements. Listening to him with JoCol would let you know how great Milt was.
I used read people saying this in Melody Maker, but Milt Jackson did record with others, so if he continued with the MJQ my guess it was because he wanted to.
I know Lewis is the leader of the group, but on a lot of these live performances when he comps in back of Milt, he is overmiked. I want to hear the vibes and Milt's solos, not John's soporific comping. He has his own solos..lDon't cover up the Great Bags!!!!
Congratulations. At last one brave soul moderated his praise sufficiently to point out the poor audio engineering. I think Milt was trying to clue the sound board operator that something was wrong with a last futile look in his direction after he finished his "solo".

Yes, he did; I just read an article today in August Modern drummer. Apparently bassist Richard Davis, was somewhat the leader of the effort, for Van.
